About ten years ago, I signed up with several survey companies to bring in extra cash. I did get paid for all of the surveys, but I don't think I would attempt it today.

First of all, the data mining possibilities/liabilities just aren't worth it. I didn't know what a risk it was a decade ago; I'm totally paranoid now.

Second, they don't pay well. I know they advertise that you can get paid big bucks for doing surveys, but the fact is, most of the surveys for money only pay a couple of dollars each. A couple of times, I got to do $5 surveys, and that was a big deal. It didn't happen often. All surveys totaled, I probably only made around $30 during a year of taking surveys regularly.

Third, most survey companies are only looking for a very particular demographic. At the time I was doing them, I was regularly disqualified on the grounds of not fitting a particular demographic. Incidentally, most of those were income related.

Fourth, they are extremely time consuming. Most of the surveys took a minimum of 25 minutes to complete. It can really eat up your time. My husband really put into perspective one day when, after waiting for me to finish an almost hour long survey, he pointed out that I was getting paid less than half of what I'd make if I just had an actual part time job.

It wasn't long after that that I quit doing them. It's just not worth the time and effort (or the potential risk).

Nothing is free! A raffle for a "free" bike? Just give them your mailing address, phone number and email so they can add you to (and sell your info on) their list. Survey for a $25 gift card? All they want is your name, birthdate, and email (now they know a common password retrieval question). There are some focus group opportunities where they want you to sit in a room and test a product for an hour - those are legit - but you still give up info and time. Personally, I would be very careful about participating in online surveys - there is just too much information available on the internet to figure out more about you and scam you.

I do and have for four or five years. There are two survey sites that actually reached out to me based on my demographic. BUT it is not real money. You earn "money" in your account, but then you trade it for gift cards and it is not dollar for dollar.
After I earn about $100 in credits, I can change for a gift card for $50. AND it is not always that way. You can trade for magazines, snacks, airline and hotel credits, but not a visa gift card. They are pre-determined rewards.

Most are scams just to get your personal info for advertising purposes. Beware!!

That said... In your local area, when a survey is given at the checkout for homedepot, staples, market street, all merchandisers pretty much... They STILL want your private info.

I can say tho, as a regular market street shopper, I have filled out their surveys online and last year I got $500. I know this company and I will only survey for a known company where I usually shop.

As far as online surveys for $$... No way am I giving them my personal info for nothing... Scam

NO ONE will give you $$ for simply filling out a form. They are scamming you to get your info.
