Supportive Nursing Bras?

My daughter is 3 months old and breastfed exclusively. I've been wearing nursing tank bras mostly, and have a couple other nursing bras, but none of these seem very supportive - I feel pretty saggy. I wasn't well endowed to begin with, and now that I have bigger cup size I feel like I don't have the lift or support that the girls need. Any suggestions?

I like Bravado and Fancee Free. Check out websites like biggerbras.com figleaves.com and bravissimo.com all have many brands/styles of nursing bras. The Bravado was more of a uniboob look but with smoother cups although it doesn't offer much support for the breast you are nursing on. The Fancee Free has lift and separation and supports the breast you are nursing on.

Call Joyce Sanborn at ###-###-####. She sells bras like they used to make with a band underneath your breast for support and no elastic straps to let you sag. The band underneath the breast actually gives you the support plus the solid straps. I have worn these for years, but I have not bought any for some time as they last a long time and they are expensive, but for what they do and how long they last they are so much better than the unsupportive bras on the market. I hope she is still in business. Good luck.

It has been a LONG time since I nursed! But, I the best thing I ever did for the girls was go get fitted for the correct bra. It made a huge difference! I had been wearing the wrong size for years. Nordstrom does the best job putting you in the correct size bra. I would think they would be able to help you with a nursing bra as well.

Nordstrom has 1 or two nice nursing bras. Not cheap but worth the effort!

Hi B.! My girls are like yours...not terribly exciting to begin with but seeming to lack support now that I am breastfeeding exclusively. (My daughter is also 3 months). I just wear the Target brand nursing tanks and honestly don't worry too much about the sagging thing. It's ok - you are a mom! :) However, I invested in a nursing bra from A Pea in the Pod. They are super comfy and supportive. No underwire though - I advise you stay away from this as it can cause clogged ducts. I pretty much only wear the bra if I am going someplace "nice." Otherwise, my daughter nurses too often for anything other than a nursing tank to be convenient! Good luck to you!

Hi! I just had my second child last August (almost a year now) and I was using the Motherhood Maternity bras....wow-didn't work for me! They put me in a 42DD.

Friends suggested Nordstrom...so I went. They fitted me and made sure it fit properly-it was WONDERFUL!! I've never felt so supported! And, I was a 40H!!! I am now only nursing once a day, so I'm down to my "normal" size now and went back to get re-fitted with a new non-nursing bra.

They are just so wonderful there! It's pricey, but I think it was totally worth it to suppport the girls!

Good luck!

Hi B.,

How far is it to El Camino Hospital for you? Maternal Connections (which was next to the gift shop and elevator to the maternity ward) has lots of brands/styles of nursing bras, and experienced staff that can help you with the fitting. (They also have lactation consultants and a breastfeeding support group that are helpful.)

If El Camino Hospital is too far, try calling the maternity ward of your local hospital and see if they have something similar. If you do head to Maternal Connections, give them a call first. I seem to recall that there was something irregular about the hours they are open. Also, the hospital has been undergoing construction, so double check where they are located now.

The Motherhood Maternity stores have some great, very comfortable nursing bras with underwires. Those were the only bras I used for my last baby and was so glad for the extra support in such a soft, comfortable bra. Check them out!

Hi B.,
I had problems finding good supportive nursing bras, too. I have a small rib cage with average size breasts, but to fit me right, I have to wear a 32F. I ordered mine online at barenecessities.com and they fit wonderfully. I can't remember the particular brand I got, but on the website you can search specifically for nursing bras. I got underwire ones and they worked out great for me. They have excellent bras. Some of them are a little pricey, but a good bra is worth it in the end. Most of them range from $50 - $80. I know it sounds like a lot for just a bra, but it was so wonderful to find one that fit and didn't make me feel like a saggy grandma (no offense to the grandmas out there!). By the way, most of us don't get our bras small enough around. I used to think I was a 34 DD. But by the time I got it right, I was a 32F, and really could use a 30. The weight of our breasts should be carried by our ribcage, not our shoulders. Good luck!

El Camino Hospital has a wonderful store with ladies that specialize in fitting nursing bras. They will properly size you and find a bra that works best for you. I am well endowed and nursing my 3 month old also. They found me a couple of different, very comfortable bras. Good luck.
