Have you checked into Chase's Place? It is located in Addison & is a school for children with developmental disabilities, including autism. I think they may also offer summer camps or programs. The website is www.chasesplace.org.
I've heard nothing but good about Leslie Bernake's "Summer Under the Umbrella" in Plano. She also runs the Under the Umbrella private school. I believe it is at Parker and Independence.
I have experience with early childhood education for 15 years. I research a lot for my own daugther who born with learning dissabilities.
I will advise you to find programs combine with music. Also al activies related to physical movement like riding horses, swimming with dolphins, dance, karate, yoga and many more. There is direct relation between physical movement and mental ability.
There is also a lot of research about special combination of vitamins that help to overcome all kind of physical and mental difficults.
The best medicine of all is a lot of LOVE and NEVER TO GIVE UP. After 13 years of working daily with my daughter she become Honor roll, I never believe in the Blue Forecast of the ones who call themselves "Experts" They do not have in consideration the power of love and patience, determination and faith in God that mothers have.
Please read the book "The Late Bloomer" specially explain to your son that be different is OK and in all cases is a gift from GOD.
I have a degree in elem. ed and special ed. I don't know where you live but I would look into the programs at Playworks and Speechease in Dallas at hillcrest and 635. Sandy Butine is AWESOME!!! She has worked with one of my sons. She has also worked with a child from our church and his mother has high praises for Sandy as well! Hang in there.

I would recommend you check out Flint Academy in Pantego/Arlington. My two boys ages 6 and 5 go to school there and they offer a summer program also. My 6 year old is recovering from Asperger's and there are many children there on the autism spectrum as well as typically developing and advanced students. Both of my boys love it there.
