I recently had to put my little one on formula as my frozen supply has dwindled. We are still bf'ing need to supplement. I tried Soy based but he projectile vomited after intake. My first son was supplmented with soy and took it no problem. He did same with Similac Organic. Has anyone else experience this type of issue and do you have any suggestions. The pedi said that he may have trouble breaking down the proteins.

Thanks so much

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice ladies. My little one take 2 bottles a day at daycare of the similac alimentum. Yikes is this stuff super expensive. I'm going to try Good Start in a couple of weeks to see if he his able to change. But i know that we have to supplement as my supply is not enough for this little eating man of mine! Again thanks for everything.

I use the Similac Sensitive ORANGE label, not the RS. The milk proteins are broken down. I started it when after Aiden went on combo BM and bottles, and he did fine. The regular Similac was too h*** o* his belly. Good luck!

My 7 month old went through the same problem.....my ped said she was having problems breaking down the proteins too. There is a formula called Enfamil Nutramigen. It is much more expensive (about $25 per 12.5 oz can) but it is a broken down formula that is much easier for them to digest. It took care of her projectiling almost instantly. I should mention that she also had acid reflux, and this was another reason they suggested this formula. After a few months, she started projectiling again, so we switched to Enfamil Prosobee, which works now (we had tried that at first beofre the Nutramigen but it didnt help). Hope this helps!!

Until they get used to the formula, you need to mix it with breastmilk. Start with a 3:1 ratio for a couple of days (like, 3 oz of breastmilk to 1 oz of formula) and then go to 2:1, 1:1, and then 1:2. At that point you can probably go straight to formula without any problems.

We used Similac Organic to supplement my son, but when he was very little (up until about 4 months) I used the Carnation Good Start with the probiotics (green can). Carnation really is easier for the little ones to digest. If you have to you can go to one of the pre-digested formulas, but they are very expensive.

Some kids don't handle change well, so you might have to go slowly. Maybe go back one nipple size so he isn't drinking it down as fast either. Good luck!

Try Nestle Good Start. My daughter had a lot of trouble transitioning from breastmilk to formula. Once I went back to work I nursed at night and sent formula bottles to the sitter during the day.

I found that Good Start worked way better than Enfamil or Similac formulas because the texture and smell was thinner and milder than other formulas. The taste was a little sweeter, like breastmilk. Of course, nothing is as good as mommy's milk, but Good Start was the only formula that my picky baby would take.

My son took Similac Advance with no trouble at all. I bought the pre-mixed bottles b/c he seemed gassy from the powder and it was only a few dollars more per week. I would question the use of soy. Been hearing a lot about how it is not all that healthy--especially for kids. (?) Good luck!

We used Infamil Gentlease and it worked out for us. My little girl used to vomit until we switched to this one. Good luck!

I don't know if you did this or not, but try mixing it with mostly breastmilk and a little bit of formula, then gradually wean to all formula if you are out of frozen. i had to supplement also and my son hated formula unless i mixed it. hope that helps!

My son has had terrible reflux and when I would have dairy and nurse him it was much worse, so when I use formula with him to supplement or in his cereal my pediatrician suggested Nutramigen by Enfamil. It is crazy expensive, but he likes it and it doesn't make him spit up any more than he usually would. We have assumed that he has a milk protein allergy, and I am about to have him have bloodwork to check. I hope this helps!

Hi J., I had the same formula issues with my daughter. She is almost 1 now. We tried soy based, all of the varieties of "sensitive" and for "spit up" and finally we tried Nutramegen with great success. It is a little bit more expensive but the proteins are so broken down that their little bellies have to do virtually no work at digesting. She is still on it but we are actually getting ready to switch to milk.
Good luck.

try Nestle Good Start- I recommend (if you can find it) the original, "purple can" formula. Most grocery stores no longer carry it but Babies R Us usually does. Good Start has broken-down proteins so it is gentler on the tummy. The original version does not have additional DHA added- the newer version with DHA tends to bother their tummies more. My daughter had trouble on many formulas till we found the original formulation of Good Start.

I would google "soy formula" and "phytoestrogens". There is alot of talk these days about limiting boy's soy intake.

My SIL had the same problem, and after trying 3 different formulas decided to just keep breastfeeding. Her little one stopped having problems.

Good luck! :)

J.,

If you can, try mixing the formula half-and-half with BMilk to start your little one off. I too recommend the Good Start brand. My kids were all BF and that was the only formula they would ever take without a fight. Good luck!

My daughter did the same thing. Our Dr switched us to Similac Alimentum and she hasn't thrown up once :) Her stomach was a mess (the Dr said it sounded like there was a war going on in there, she let me listen and her description was pretty accurate) and needed a formula that was a bit easier for her system to handle.
