Stroller Suggestions for Almost 5Yr Old

I know this sounds odd but my almost 5yr old daughter who weighs in right at 40lbs still requires a stroller ride if going somewhere with extended periods of walking. I have a Graco brand stroller now that we've had since she was an infant. Its in good shape and I plan to use it again as a travel system when I have baby #2 the end of this year. I am not sure if I want to invest in a double stroller since both seats hold a 40 # maximum each [ graco brand], but not sure if there is another double on the market that holds a heavier child? BUT in March we are going to Disney and I KNOW I will need some sort of stroller for her. Do I just push 2 strollers or bite the bullet and get a double. I have looked into a "sit n stand" but not sure if I like them or not. My daughter occasionally falls asleep while riding and the sit n stand does not offer anything for the 2nd rider except a bench without shade protection. Suggestions... input needed.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

With the many suggestions I have been given, both on here and through friends. I am opting to NOT invest in another stroller at this time. Disney has stroller rentals [ I did not know this] that we can rent while there so I am happy about that considering they hold an older child quite well according to some of my Disney Pro mom friends. The newly arriving baby can ride in the stroller I already have while there. [ I do "sling" my children but also give my back a break and let them snooze in the stroller too]. As for at home, she walks 90% of the time just about anywhere we go and I do have a 2nd stroller just a cheap umbrella stroller that she uses a lot. So I would like to thank you all for the input on strollers. I do have a friend who offered to let me use their sit-n-stand for a trial run if need be. Thanks again mommas!! Thats why I love this site!!!

I know this is going to sound cruel, but make her walk. If she gets tired, sit on a bench for a few minutes for her to rest her feet; I know Disney has a multiple day ticket that you can get, maybe it would be a good idea to get those, see some of the park one day then go back to the hotel, rest and go back the next day to see the rest. She needs to get used to walking if is almost five; they don't have strollers in Kindergarten. Good luck and have fun!

Check out that address to amazon. It is a baby trend sit and stand, however, it has as seat for the second child to fall asleep in :) I know it's a lot of money, but my double stroller, I think, was totally worth the money.

You could wear the baby in a sling, or other baby carrier. There all kinds of good ones out there!
I also say someone at the zoo today with an infant seat on the back part of the sit and stand stroller. I don't know if it was designed to hold the infant seat or not but that is how they were using it.
Personally I think that most of the time a 5 year old should be able to walk and if she gets too tired them you could carry the infant. Unless you are planning on having more children and would get more use out of a double later it would probably be a waste of money.

There are times that a 5 yo, no matter how much in or out of shape they are, needs a little help. My 5 yo is in great shape, but so are we. Sometimes he can not keep up with the many miles we walk in a day, and he shouldn't be expected to.
At any rate, we have a double joggin stroller for our 3 boys, 5yo, 2&1/2, and 9 mos. The baby stays in the stroller and the other two hop in and out as needed. When they need a break, they sit for a while. When there is something interesting, they walk for a while. We picked ours up at a mom-2-mom sale for $40.
A wagon is a good idea also. You'd like them to be able to rest but still have freedom. Good luck with the trip!

My 4 year old will not ride in a stroller most of the time so I can't help you there BUT I just got back from Disney and King's Island and here's what we did. For Disney, having a stroller for my two year old was a must and since it was quite a distance from the shuttles to the gates we took our Maclaren Volo umbrella stroller. This was very helpful for carrying bags, camera, souvenirs etc. When we got to the gate we rented a stroller for the 4 year old. It's just molded plastic with a sun shade (more like hopping in a wagon) and absolutely would not hold an infant. He was able to just hop in and out when he wanted to. It made it so much easier to keep up with him in crowds and to keep a nice walking pace too. Having two strollers isn't a pain if there are two adults and at times I did find myself pushing both which wasn't difficult but was also not what I would want to do the entire time.

We had a sit-and-stand stroller and my 4 year old (then 3) hated it. It was not comfortable at all and he wanted to walk most of the time anyway. I think that if you are going to Disney renting is the way to go. I guess I have a hard time with a 5 year old needing a stroller for a walk in the mall or around the neighborhood. Get that child in shape and make her walk :)

I know you already made your decision, but since no one else suggested it, I wanted to mention one more option. I don't know the weight limit, but I have something for my 3 year old called a Buggy Board. It is a two-wheeled board that attaches to the back of the stroller. It is really made for the child to stand on, but my daughter also likes to sit sideways on it and hold on to the basket. It is very sturdy and is adjustable. It costs about $100. The only local store that sells them is BuyBuy Baby at Hall Rd. and Schoenner. If you are interested, note that there are two kinds - you have to get the correct model for the type of stroller you have (depending on whether it attaches to the side bars or a back bar).

I have a Graco Duoglider double stroller and use it carry my multiply disabled 6 year old (about 50lbs) and my 1 1/2 year old (about 25lbs). We've used it so much it squeals slightly when you have both boys in it but it's held out since the 2nd was born. The front seat is too small for the 6 year old if I have the tray attached but otherwise both seats will hold him.

They do have strollers at Disney... they must have requests for something to carry older kids in...?

My son was in and out of the stroller until he was almost 7 yrs. old. He was on the smaller side and used to get very tired if we were out for long periods of time. We invested in a double stroller when my daughter was born. My children are 3 1/2 years apart. At the time we bought a double stroller by Peg Perego. It was very expensive but it was the top of line at that time. I actually still have the stroller which is in excellent condition. I would be willing to sell it if you are interested. You mentioned that you will be visiting Disney next year, I know that they used to rent strollers there at the park. Good Luck!

The baby trend sit n' stand has an option of a sit n' stand in the back as well as a regular seat... I have one, just got it now that I have two... I have my infant son in the front in a Graco carrier that fits and my daughter in the back in the sit n' stand option and we can just put the regular seat in if we want to... I love this stroller!!! I would totally recommend looking into it...
I got it from walmart they had the best price and they had free shipping (not sold in stores)

Hi S., I just joined and I have a 42lb almost 3 year old and we use our wagon constantly. I don't know if Disney offers one, but for at festivals and that a wagon was a Godsend.

My 5 year old doesn't require a stroller, but at a place like Disney, I would bring one anyway! I hated pushing a big bulky stroller, so as soon as possible I bought an umbrella stroller. However, I also hated that the typical ones were about 3 inches too short for me to push without slouching over. I found one at Babies R Us that is taller. I can't remember my brand, but the Jeep umbrellas are taller, too (if you need that). I never went the double stroller route, although I did check out the ones with the standing platform and also the little backwards bench...but they never looked like the right solution for us, either. I say push two. You are going to need dad (or somebody) to push the 5yo while you tend to the new baby, anyway. It will give you some more comfort to have them separate, IMO. Also, you may be lucky enough to find one that you could stash away underneath the big stroller if the 5yo wants to walk! My opinion...I've never been able to picture myself pushing a big ole double stroller! :)

We have twin boys who are almost 3. They are tall for their age (I figured they would be, my oldest was too and my DH is 6'2") so we bought the Double Mountain Buggy stroller because it holds a max weight of 135 lbs. It's an expensive stroller and certainly an expensive option for you. If I were you, I would skip getting a double stroller -- your 5 yr old should be able to walk and keep up and not need lots of breaks. We are going to Disney in Nov. We're renting a stroller from Orlando Stroller Rentals (cheaper than Disney, they deliver to our hotel and pick up). That would be what I suggest you do for her while at Disney. They rent double strollers.

You should look into the sit and stand stroller. I bought the one by Baby Trend and have used it several times @ Disney LOVE IT! then your older one can get on and off as she needs to or jump on if it gets crazy with crowds. Has good cup holders and a storage compartment and it was in the 100 dollar range.

S., I think you can rent a double stroller at Disney. They are pretty basic, so you'd need something to safely put the new baby in it... How exciting! It's also possible that your 5 year old will want to help and push by then! Good luck.
