A good friend of mine has been trying to have baby #2 for a loooong time. She's had 4 miscarriages, and is pregnant again. Things were going MUCH better this time than the last 2, but now she is spotting. She's in her 11th week. Has anyone had spotting that late & had everything turn out ok? Just looking for some reassurance!! thanks!
ETA: Don't worry, she has called the dr. & has an appointment for an ultrasound tomorrow! I am still hoping that everything will be all right, and wanted to have some examples of people who have done ok after spotting to reassure her if the u/s goes ok.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much to everyone for sharing your experiences! Unfortunately, at the ultrasound this morning there was no heartbeat and no growth since her last u/s two weeks ago. =(

I had spotting at 9 weeks and then again at 13 weeks with my first pregnancy and gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl. Spotting is quite common, but with her history she should go and see her doctor sooner rather than later.

We actually went to the ER when I was spotting at 13 weeks (I'd actually passed a clot about the size of my thumbnail), and that was when I first got to hear her heartbeat :)

Due to her history, she should see her doctor ASAP. That being said, it isn't uncommon to spot during pregnancy after sex ( the membranes are thin and prone to small tearing).

Yes. I spotted at 7 weeks, then again at 11-12. I went to the ER both times, where they were *very reassuring* (please note the sarcasm). They blatantly told me I was likely miscarrying. Both times they took me for a vaginal ultrasound and there was that little dot, with a crazy beating heart.

I finally had a little chat with God and told him that if I was going to lose that baby, please let it go ahead and happen.
I never spotted again until I was far enough along for the baby to be viable.
That baby was born healthy at 38w,1d.
He's now a wild little 20 month old.

I also wanted to say that I also had bleeding during my last pregnancy. My child went to term and he is just fine.
I bleed not spotting about 6 times and the last time was at 16 weeks. One of the times I was at work and (warning TMI) the blood just kept coming/gushing out. I ending up calling 911 and being rushed to the hospital. My little boy was just fine. They never found a reason for the bleeding but it had to be one of the scarest times in my life.

It's possible that she could be having period-like bleeding. With my first, I had what seemed like a period for the first four months. It was obviously lighter than usual, and brown in color instead of red. This is actually fairly common, and most women go on to deliver healthy babies.

The most important thing your friend can do is not stress. I know that's hard, but the more she worries about it the more cortisol is released into her system, and that can actually lead to miscarriage.

This is my 4th pregnancy and around 10 weeks I did start spotting. I was spotting enough I needed to put a pad on and it went for nearly a day. It was enough blood that I was leaving drops in the toilet. I was pretty sure I was miscarrying. I cried, I was freaked out. I called my doctor and they were MUCH less concerned. I am now nearly 38 weeks pregnant - same pregnancy. :)

I think my sister had spotting around this time with her daughter. She also miscarried multiple times before this pregnancy. Good luck, I hope everything is OK with your friend.

I had spotting (and even quite a bit of blood) during the first trimester with my two successful pregnancies. I think the last times were around that time. I also just had an early miscarriage, and it was totally different - I knew almost right away it was a miscarriage. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your friend! Still, if things do not turn out OK this time, 5 miscarriages in a row isn't quite normal and might be a sign that she could use some help to have baby #2 (maybe her progesterone levels are low, or there's some other problem).

My sister spotted through the 1st tri and even into the 2nd tri with her first 2 boys. We all freaked out, my husband & I rushed her home from work one day in downtown Mpls so she could see our OB in Burnsville. She has 3 very healthy boys and has never miscarried.

I had spotting throughout both my pregnancies and from what I understand it's not that uncommon. I have two healty girls. But the doctor should be able to give more reassurance.

I had light spotting starting at 12 weeks and off and on throughout my entire first pregnancy and all turned out fine...I have a beautiful 5-year-old daughter to prove it. Hope it's something of a similar, non-threatening nature with your friend!!!

Right at the end of my first trimester I woke up in the middle of the night with bleeding and passed a large amount of tissue. I was sure I had miscarried, but it ended up being a blood clot. I had spotting for about 3 weeks after that. Our baby was born without any problems. I had a small vaginal tear that had probably clotted because it happened right before I went on a long road trip. They did a couple of extra ultrasounds to monitor it, but it didn't cause any problems. I was told vaginal tears are actually very common and can be caused by lifting something, exercise, sex, going up stairs, etc. If she doesn't have cramping or pain she is probably ok, but it is good she has called her doctor. ( I also had a couple of days of spotting with our son too.)

I think it would be a good idea for her to go to her doctor and just get checked out to be on the safe side. But when I was 10 weeks with my first pregnancy I started bleeding a lot. Like through my underwear and on my bed sheets. I thought for sure I miscarried but I went in and it turned out I have placenta previa. I had to go on bed rest until the bleeding stopped (that took 3 weeks) but then I stopped bleeding and everything was the fine the rest of the time. She is 3 1/2 now :) So thing can turn out just fine but she still need to be check out.

I wish I had a good answer but I've had 5. Any bright red blood in the first was always a miscarriage. But they always told me that if I bled it was a threatened miscarriage and half turned out positive. None of mine ever did. :(

I hope your friend is in the other half!!

I spotted at around 9-10 weeks and ended up miscarrying at 14 weeks. I wish I could report a different result, but it is what it is. There was no bright red blood, either, just spotting. Hopefully your friend will have better resutls!
