My son who is nine months old has been crawling for about a month or so. Since he has started crawling he seems to spit up (its more like throw up and smells like throw up) more often than before. He doesnt do it often, but when he does, he doesnt want to eat much of anything afterwards, even hours later. He doesnt over eat nor do we over feed him. Has anyone else had this happen with their kids? I am not overly concerened but just wanted to know if anyone else experienced this or is it common?

What can I do next?

Both of my children were the same way and my daughter was diagnosed at about 6 months with acid reflux and was on prescribtion Zantac for about a year and then we were able to slowly remove her from it, now we just watch what she eats. My son how ever had a mild case of it and did not need to have any medication just Enfamil with AR.(A formula for children that spit up a lot.)_Till recently when we switched him to whole milk and he stopped wanting to eat and it went on for three weeks. He would eat something have some milk get sick and throw it all up and then not want to eat again. When I took him we actually found out that the three weeks was the first three weeks of new milk and is now on 100% Lactose free milk which is $3 for a halk gallon and takes prevacid tablets to calm his stomach ( for just 30 days). I would have never thought about him having a lactose problem problem but was very happy to take him in and get the problem under control. I am not one to be big on giving a bunch of medications but when it comes to them not being able to eat with out it medication really works. I hope this helps. I would call and speak to the doctor.

If you are open to natural remedies, I would use drinkable aloe vera (it comes in juice like flavors). It heals and soothes. Just like when you have a cut or burn and put aloe on to heal, it can do the same to your insides. I used it when my daughter had her tonsils out and she takes it daily for her acid reflux (she has a prescription for Zantac). It also has over 200 nutrients and helps build the immune system. It will heal and not just treat the symptoms.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Good luck!!

This is so funny because I am just noticing the same exact thing with my son (he is 7 months old). All the feedback to your question helped me!

Jeanna-
I know exactly what you are going through. My 10 month old does the same thing. We actually just went to the doctor for his check up on Saturday and asked him about it. The doctor told us not to worry about it because babies that have acid reflux are very cranky/colicy. And my son is always happy. Some babies are 'happy spitters'. If your son is cranky, then I'd worry about acid reflux. Also, you can always call your doctor with the question. They are always happy to help. If they think it's important for you to come in, they will have you make an appointment. Good luck!

I had this happen once and my daughter had an intestinal infection. You might want a doctors opinion to figure out what's going on.

Talk to your doctor about reflux. A friend of mines son had it but it occurred more when he started crawling. He may not want to eat due to the burning it leaves in their throat. Most kids out grow it by the time they are a year and a half (feels like forever to get there though). There are meds out there if your doctor wants to even go that route.

We have had a lot of problems with puking in our house. Our daughters both were diagnosed with acid reflux and that was the source of our problem. I'd give your peditrican a call and see what they suggest. :) Good luck!

I have a similar problem with my almost 8 month old, except that he is not crawling yet - but he hates being on his tummy. We are having problems getting him to eat after spitting up/vomiting as well. We took him to the doctor and were told that we could try reflux meds. I just really don't want to go that route. I keep hoping he will grow out of it. I don't know what to do either. If you find any alternatives, please let me know!!!

I would ask your pediatrician about acid reflux. It sounds like this may be the case (the "vomit" smell, not wanting to eat afterwards, discomfort, etc). My son went through this briefly when he started crawling, but quickly outgrew it once he got the hang of getting around. It may just be tough on his tummy right now.

Good Afternoon Jeanna-
I noticed with my 3 kids that one they started moving around the spit up was coming more often and they also would not eat really after that. I brought them to the Dr and they had told me that if they eat then start moving around they will tend to spit up more because of using the stomach muscles right after filling their tummys. It will pass after Max has been crawling longer.
Take care-

Have you doctor rule out - or in - the reflux option. Kids won't eat after the 'reflux' spit/vomit because of the burning sensation. And even babies are smart enough to figure out that it hurts when they eat - or just after they eat. They may even stop eating enough. My daughter went to the extreme of not eating enough because of her reflux that at 1 year of age she needed a feeding tube in her tummy so that we could feed her. She just didn't want to eat anymore and refused to eat the medicines so we were left with no choice but to intervene. Look for other postings on this topic where the medicines have been discussed by other moms.
