I'd really appreciate feedback re: what type of electric toothbrush to get and how it works for the whole family -- do you just get extra brushes and use the same unit? My husband and I have some deeper "pockets" in our gums than we've had before and using an electric toothbrush was recommended. Hard to figure out which brand/model is best. Any thoughts? Would love your feedback as well as any success stories re: reversal of gum disease!

Thanks for all the responses and info. So appreciate it. Would love to hear any more success stories out there!:-) For all you Sonicare users, any particular model you like or features to get or avoid? Thank you!

I have used both - for gum issues I would recommend Sonicare. I was heading towards gum issues myself and the electronic toothbrush has made such a significant difference! Also, the Sonicare is better at removing stains - I am a avid coffee and tea drinker and it has made a difference.

My dentist recommended sonicare. Its bristles vibrate, rather than rotate. You don't want rotating bristles because they can irritate your gums.

We tried the Oral B but it didn't feel like my teeth were getting clean. So, I returned it and went with the Sonicare. So much nicer! And yes - you can use the same base unit with different toothbrush heads for different members of your family.

I love my Sonicare, but my dentist recommended brushing only once a day with it and using a manual toothbrush the other time. She said it can be very harsh on the enamel and to hold it as if I was using two fingers (no pressure). I don't know if she would have recommended the same if I had been using Oral B. I used to have an OralB; I like the Sonicare much better!

Here is a link to a six-month clinical comparison of the efficacy of the Sonicare and the Braun Oral-B electric toothbrushes on improving periodontal health in adult periodontitis patients.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9487838

To summarize: "Overall, this study demonstrates that long-term use of these two electric toothbrushes improves periodontal health in adult periodontitis patients, and that the Sonicare brush is superior to the Braun brush in reducing gingival inflammation and probing depth. Moreover, 6 months' use of Sonicare led to actual improvement in probing attachment levels of periodontal pockets."

Our family bought sonicare brushes years ago and still have them. We just get new heads every six months. As for how to use it for the whole family, you can buy a unit for each person or you can buy multiple color banded heads and swap the heads out onto the main unit to share between people. Since our family tends to all brush at the same time, we each have our own units but we all share a charging station.

We use oral B. Recommended by dentist, can't remember why. I bought one recharge unit for each bathroom, and a handle for each person. My son had to see the periodontist because of gum recession and pockets. They wanted to do the root planing and scaling, $2000. He's only 17 yo! 6 months of diligent brushing and flossing and his gums are now normal. We didn't have to do the special perio clean, he's back to regular cleanings and screenings at the dentist.

We have the Sonicare kind.

Got them as a gift from the in-laws (Their dentist recommended them and they liked them so much they bought one for EVERYONE) I think they got a good deal at Costco b/c they came 2 to a box. So we each have our own full toothbrush not just each our own 'head'...although I know you can share that way..it is easy enough to just switch out the heads for each person and they come with different colored bands around them so you can keep track of whos is whos.

I've had both brands & love my sonicare! It may take a few uses to like it. It tickles most people at first but is very gentle & gives a great cleaning.
