My 3 year old son had really bad cradle cap and it seems it has never gone away. He hates it when we brush his hair to try and get it out. Any suggestions on ways to get rid of it. When he was younger I tried using lotions and brushing it quite often. Now that he is older he hates haveing anything done to his head. It's even a struggle to wash it. Thanks for all your help and advice. This is a great site.

California Baby's Bodywash and Shampoo with Tea Tree Oil and Lavender. The Tea Tree Oil helps loosen the cradle cap and makes it easier to brush out. It also acts as a soother for the little one to make the cradle cap not be as irritating. You can find this at Vitamin Cottage. Hope it helps!

L.,

My son also had cradle cap when he was younger, and someone told me to use a tinny bit of Selsum Blue or Head and sholders (it worked for me), also don't wash his hair every day, it drys out the hair and scalp. I hope this will help you out.

I was a pediatric nurse for 4 1/2 years and we had a little boy with symptoms just like what you describe, and when we cultured his head it was actually a chronic fungal infection, not cradle cap. They do look very similar, but fungal infections are more persistent and don't respond to normal treatment for cradle cap. I would ask your provider to culture it and/or treat for fungus. GOOD LUCK!!

Even though he hates to have his head messed with, if u can win that battle, try soaking his head in baby oil for like 15 minutes, then use a nail brush and gently scrub his scalp, messy, but works, after scrubbing, put him in the bath and wash his hair, we used this when our baby had real bad cradle cap and it worked only after a few trys. Maybe try explaining to him what u are gonna do, then offer a reward for a job well done?
good luck

We used aquaphor on our sons cradle cap and it went away with 2 weeks. It should be available at any drugstore. Hope this helps.

Hi there -

My son had this problem for a little bit when he was 2. I used Neutrogena T-Sal shampoo, but I think the best thing for it was combing it out - he didn't like it either, but I got almost all of the gunk out in one or two sittings. Good luck to you!

Hi L.,
I know you have received several responses, but wanted to add to the thought to check out food allergies. My daughter had what we thought was cradle cap and found out it was an allergy to milk, soy and wheat. Changing her diet coupled with Aquaphor was tremendous.

All the Best,
D.

Our pediatrician suggested Selson Blue for my daughter's cradle cap - it smells terrible but her severe case cleared up in only 2 washings and almost no brushing.- She is 3 months old and if it's safe for her I imagine it would be fine for an older child although you maight want to double check w/ your Dr.

My daughter had it bad when we first moved out here, from Michigan! Hers was just from the change in atmosphere, but I put baby oil on her head, and massaged it! It worked wonderfully! As far as him not liking his head touched, try and get him to brush his hair, or try making a game out of it! Good luck!

My Doctor had me use a mild dandruff shampoo on my babies and that seemed to take care of it pretty quick.

My kids both had cradle cap when they were babies and I tried every remedy that I could find. I finally asked their pediatrician who suggested "Head and Shoulders" for sensitive skin. Within a week or two it was gone, never to return. Just make sure it doesn't get in his eyes because it will sting.

Good luck.

Hello L.,

All the products that were submitted are toxic and I don't recommend any of them. I know this through tones of research. What I would use is t-tree oil mixed with Olive oil- you lightly rub in on to the area that is needed let it sit for a while and then wash it out.

I use this for my son and it is amazing, it works for dandruff too.

If you'd like to know more about healthier products I would be happy to share with you where I shop. You might even want to visit my blog, there is a tone of info there.
http://healthyhouse4u.blogspot.com/

I stopped using everyday products from retail stores because of the toxic ingredients in them and found a company that is awesome- they use the purest form of t-tree oil in their products and they work better than anything I have ever used, the best part is they have aloud us to have a healthier life.

If you'd like to know more you can email me at ____@____.com.

L.....
I struggled with my son for years and years....come to find out his cradle cap was caused by food allergies. I added liquid vitamin B complex to his juice. Within 2 weeks it was clearing up. To this day he is fine!!
Also colloidial silver (found at health food stores) it's kinda spendy but it's a natural anitibiotic i use it for everything..I myself had bad break outs on my face and started washing with it and cleared it up. I use it for a mouthwash too for cankers. I put it on my kids cuts and scrapes b4 putting bandaids on.

Also, back to my son I had to change his diet we changed it to a lot of raw foods and soured products suck as low-fat yogurt.

If I were you I would go to a nutritionist. Come to find out my son has celiac disease which means a gluten-free diet. That was life changing but has been the best for all of us!!

Yup, I'm in the olive oil/vegetable oil camp. What I did was put my daughter in the tub and wet her hair, then I rubbed in a little bit of vegetable oil. I let it sit for 5 minutes and then I washed her hair as usual. The cradle cap came right off.

Good luck.

Try the Nutragena T-gel shampoo (kind of a tar looking shampoo). It's pretty expensive for a small bottle (4 oz), about $7.00 but if he is the only one using it should last a while. My son had a similar problem a couple years ago and we used this and in a less than a week it was gone!! I would recommend only using about every other day though because it made his scalp tender when we used it every day. good luck getting him to actually want his hair washed none of my kids have ever liked that part of bath time. So maybe your question will also help me find ideas for that as well. best of luck!

Hi L., I don't know if you've ever heard of neutrogena T-Gel? It can really work wonders on a dry and flaky scalp! It's a shampoo that has to stay on the scalp for 3 minutes or so. My daughter use to get eczema really bad on her hands, and scalp. After a few washes it was an amazing improvement.

Hi L.,

I have never personally experienced cradle cap with my girls, but my mom told me that my brother had it really bad when he was young and she used Head & Shoulders to get rid of it. I would assume any dandruff shampoo would work, but that is what she used. He had it until he was 3 and she had tried everything. That seemed to do the trick.

Good luck!
