My son wasn't ever really on a bottle, but he didn't take to the sippy cup at first. I think its' a different form of sucking that they aren't used to. Try taking the stopper out first and then letting him drink from it so that he can see that there is liquid inside. Then replace the stopper so that you don't have messes. this is what worked for me

He's still young, let him drink from the bottle longer. My youngest, as I've said before, had a bottle until he was 4, 'cause we got lazy, and he's fine, teeth are fine.

we let our son experiment with a regular cup first. we got little plastic tumblers from target at low cost. we put a little water in it and just let him try to use it. he liked to blow bubbles into water. :o)

after that, we tried offering a few different kinds of sippy cups. he ended up liking the born-free one and we switched to ones without a stopper pretty soon after.

also, have you tried straw cups?

lastly, let the baby experiment with cups when they are not hungry or thirsty. you don't want them to be frustrated and learning about a new way to feed or drink. sounds counter-intuitive, but we found keeping it fun and interesting was very useful.

we got rid of bottles around 10-11 mos except for a morning bottle. we were completely bottle free around 13 mos.

I agree, wait a little longer. No harm done if a 10 month old stays on a bottle longer. That's still pretty young to force it, I think. It took me until my daughter was 3 before she could go to bed w/o a bottle (of water). Her teeth are fine, and she's great w/ a regular cup. My son didn't go to a sippy cup until 12 months old because he just couldn't get into the different sucking thing. I just kept it around and he eventually learned. I still keep the stoppers on the sippy cup because I, too, hate the mess. :-)
