Single White Patch on Tongue

Hi everyone,
My 14 month old son has had a low grade fever (99.5ish) for three days now. He is not presenting any signs of a congestion. He is not coughing and does not have diarrhea. This morning I noticed a white irregular patch about 3mm across on the tip of his tongue. The rest of his mouth is clear of any signs of thrush. He is not currently taking any antibiotics or any other medications. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing the patch? Could it be thrush even if it is in only one area? Does thrush naturally occur without antibiotic therapy in healthy toddlers?

Thanks All!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

The patch resolved on it's own a few days later. My perspective is that he probably bit it at some point. Thank you all.

I think that when it comes to your child's health that you should never "wait and see what happens". Because he has the fever combined with the white spot, it wouldn't hurt to take baby in for a check.

Hi A.,

Yes, it's possibly thrush even if it's only in an isolated area. My son had it too, and I was told it was a sign of yeast. I had a yeast infection at the time so it wasn't hard to believe. It was accompanied by a rash on his bottom. Acidolphilus helped. He wasn't on antibiotics. I don't remember if I did anything else. It was several years ago.
Sorry I'm not more help.

When my oldest was about 8 months old, he got what they called 'hand, foot, and mouth' disease. He had a low-grade fever and 3-4 small, white bumps in his mouth. It eventually ran its course, but lucky for me, I got it! I went to the med center because the back of my throat was coated in white... they did a culture and verified that I had this virus (I'm sorry, I can't remember the true medical name for it.) By the next day, my feet and hands were covered with blisters. The doc told me that I got it much worse because it is one of those childhood diseases that torment adults when they get them... I would keep an eye on him, but it could be this virus that needs to run its course. Be sure to watch your older girls... if indeed this is what he has, it is very contagious.

Could be trush, or hand-foot-and-mouth, or maybe he bit his tongue. 99.5 really isn't a fever, it is actually normal for my DD.

It could be strep throat! My son had the same thing, I too thoguth it was thrush...too him to the dr. and it was strep throat. Take hime to teh dr.

Just so you know a little bit about my background. I have my BSN in nursing and I have be an RN for going on 9 years now. I currently work in the emergency department and we see individuals from age 0 on up. The patch on yours childs tongue may be thrush or it may not be, but never guess when it comes to your child's health. Follow up with your pediatric doctor or take the child to the nearby clinic for an evaluation.
