I was just reading the post about not having the family of the the child with scarlet fever at a birthday party. So, now I am second guessing myself. My son woke up with a cough and 99.5 fever, so he will not be attending my nephew's party later today. But my dad offered to take my daughter to the party as she is not sick...

Should I not send her? It is at a local amusement park and she has been looking forward to it.
HELP!!??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I sent my daughter and she had a blast!!
Kept my son home and by lunch he was running a 102.5 fever and sounded like he was going to cough up a lung.

She has not had any symptoms and seems fine. He woke up today with no fever or cough...so I guess it was a 24 hour thing.

Thanks for the advice!!

I once had to stay home b/c my sister was sick. I was not but b/c she couldn't go on the trip, I couldn't either. I still cannot, to this day, fathom the 'why' in that decision. It's not her fault that her brother is sick so on one hand you should allow her to go. Although on the other hand, she has been exposed to whatever is making him sick. Could she possibly 'spread' the illness to others at the park although she isn't physically sick just yet, she could 'carry' the illness w/her. It's a catch 22 but if she's still well when it's time to leave, then perhaps she could be allowed to go. Good luck!

Personally, I would think that if your son just has a bug, it's perfectly alright to send your daughter. To me, there is a BIG difference between being exposed to a 'bug' and being exposed to scarlet fever.

I would let her go. If she's not showing any outward signs of being sick then there is no reason to spoil her fun. Just because your son is sick doesn't mean that she has picked up the same bug and is contagious.

Actually according the the children's hospitals out here, 99.5 is not really a fever at all. That is why schools don't require you pick up your children unless their fever is 100 or over.
Your daughter should be perfectly fine to go to the party.

99.5 is not a fever. It is within the normal range of temp for a child. The cough could just be from allergies or something in the air. However do what you feel comfortable for your son. I would not withhold your daughter though. If she is fine, then more than likely she is not sick. Let her go have some fun. Besides, who wants to be around their sick brother. Ha ha ha!

There are many more germs at the amusement park than your little girl could possibly be carrying. I say let her go as long as she has not temp or symptoms. I think keeping her in when she is well is not fair and will bum her out. I get the thing about a family member with scarlet fever, but your little boy sounds mild so I think she is fine to go. Good luck!

Hi Maretta,
Your post was not clear, was your son exposed to scarlet fever? If not he probably has a bug and you are smart to keep him home, but your daughter is fine. If he has been exposed then it might be wise to keep both home.
I am a teacher and several years ago I had 11 girls in my class come down with scarlet fever after a sleepover birthday party. It is contagious.

I think you're right to keep your son home, but I don't really see a need to keep your daughter home. Especially since you're not sending her into the close quarters of someone's home. There is a difference between a cold and a confirmed case of scarlet fever (which is a very contagious strep infection).

That being said, just because she doesn't have a fever doesn't mean she isn't contagious. We can all be contagious without even knowing we are coming down with something. If she were to wake up with a fever tomorrow, I would definitely give the birthday family a courtesy call.

Send her for sure. Especially if it is at an amusement park and not at a home.

I agree with the previous posters. One, your daughter isn't showing signs of fever or illness. Two, you aren't sending her to someone's home; it's an amusement park. Go ahead and let her have fun!

You are being so considerate! I wish more parents were like you!

I would say go ahead and send your daughter. You are right to keep your son home, especially if he is coughing.
