I've always used Pedipeds (which are similar to robeez). Whatever you pick, it should be extremely soft and flexible.

Moccasins. My mom found some at LLBean, and Target sells them. Very flexible, very soft. Gives the child just enough protection so the feet won't get hurt but not so much that they can't bend when they need to.

We used Converse high-top crib shoes. I wanted his ankles to be supported, but I wanted the soles to be soft for a more natural feel.

We used thin leather moccasin style shoes, just to protect them from sharp objects. I believe the foot develops better unhindered from external forces, like shoes, and when its allowed full range of it's natural motion. A sole of a shoe will hinder/alter natural movement and range. Barefoot is best for their grip and balance whenever possible. Finally, contrary to popular belief, 'hightops' do not provide ankle support. The hightop is there only to hold the foot in position within the shoe and prevent the foot from shifting foward causing toes to bump against the toe of the shoe.(that's why basketball players wear them - all the sudden stopping cause your feet to shift in the shoe) Besides, when a child is learning to walk, you don't want to provide any type of 'brace' or extra support - their little muscles need to develop all on their own or they will have weak ankle muscles and be prone to injury.

Robeez, Pedipeds and See Kai Run are all great shoes with a super flexible sole. When they are home, barefoot is best.
Stride Rite is a great place to go for getting their feet measured and figuring out the best size and type of shoe to buy. Even if you don't buy from them, they'll help measure and they give good advice.
