I have been thinking of getting a breast reduction. I have always been a big busty female. I think it is in the genes but who knows. I have experienced pain in my upper back and alot in my lower(lower back also has arthritis). I have indentions in my shoulders from my bra straps also. I was wondering if having this surgery would help or not. I am seeking information from women who have or will have breast reduction surgery. I would like to hear your opinions on the subject. Who would I need to speak to about this problem? I was told my OB/GYN or general practitioners, is this right? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I think you have diffent need for this surgery! I am only 27 but I am having this surgery in Jan.. My sister had it done 2 years ago and her headaches back pain are gone. Now it is very very painfull and you can't lift for a good 3 weeks but she says that its the best thing she ever did. I talked to my regular dr. and then they have to go through your ins. company. I'm going through Dr. White in Pittsburgh and I think the surgey is around $10,000.00

Hello T.. I myself have not had that problem..actually just the opposite, but my sister in law has had the reduction and feels so much better. like you, she had back problems. she was always thin and very tall but with very large breast. She feels 100% better and looks better. Where as before the first thing you saw on her were her boobs. Her medical insurance covered it. I believe either your family doctor or your obgyn can make suggestions. She had the sugery in the last year. I hope this helps.

Hi T.,
my mother in law did it just las week. she was also having bak pains and also had some tissue found on one of her breast that had to be taken out as preventive care. her ob/gyn recomended breast reduction and was even with her at surgery. wish I could recomend her but this was done in Nicaragua.
However I think you should start with you ob/gyn as well, and then with your general dr. but first off, check with your insurance to see how it works and who should recomend the surgery and how much they cover.
ok, that's my two cents. good luck

You talk to a plastic surgeon about it. But you should look for a reputable one. Having the reduction will make you more comfortable, but some folks go in for this sort of thing with higher expectations than they should. You will have significant scarring, and you may have loss of sensation. Also, I think if you plan on having other kids and breast-feeding, it will prevent you from breast-feeding. Also, your recovery will be about two weeks, and you will need help at home in recovering.

I had a breast reduction three years ago. I wish I had done it sooner. I had back surgery for a crushed vertebra in 96 and the pain in my back was unbearable, I also had numerous breast infections that had to be surgically drained so my insurance covered the reduction. My recovery was very quick, and I feel so much better about myself and the way I look in clothes. I went to a plastic surgeon who is excellent, if you would like his name let me know.
