I can't believe I'm 47 and going through menopause! The hot flashes are driving me crazy - especially during these hot summer days. Can anyone share with me some natural herbs that have helped them? Or what has your doctor told you or given you that has worked?
Thanks,
J. T

J.,
I went through menopause when I was in my early 50's. I had read sometime before that vit E taken daily would help so started on that even before menopause. I had two hot flashes, no mood swings. Even my dr. did not believe me. I am 72 now and have never had to have any thing for aging. People tell me I look to be in my 50's. Hope this helps. B.

I've heard that black kolash or colash, sorry don't know the name, was a good herb to use, and also some sort of yam. I know people don't like to take meds, and want herbs, and thats great, but a Dr. gave me a low dose of esstrogen so many days, and progestron so many days, and I didn't have any hot flashes.
At a health food store I think they have a shelf of a bunch of different kids of help, the clerk could explain the difference.

My story. I went to the doctor about your age and he put me on harmones. WEll, after a year of getting regulate he then said lets try something new. He upped the dose and normally you go on one for about 16 days add the other off for 5 something like that. But he upped the dose then told me to take it every day. I ended up having a stroke at age 49. I had brain damage and my hubby asked me for a divorce. I could not remember a paper chase of our moneys and lost thousands of dollars in the divorce. So I would stick it out and as you go to a health store and get some vitamins. Harmones are horse urine as one gal told me that worked in the pharmacy. Today I have recovered and use my hand now that was numb. I have relearned how to spell and write and type and shave my legs and do everything and I even went to College online. So I replaced those dead brain cells but they have me on Coumandin that has to be monitored monthly. I went to the doctor for years every month. Now I just get blood drawn. But also hard to find insurance being on coumadin. So my advice is our moms lived through it and so can we. G. W

Been there. Done that! My DR recommended "BLACK COHASH". You can get it at the vitamin store. I think it is spelled correctly. I used it at the very last of my menopause and do think that it helped. I never took any other medication or hormones during that time. Hope this helps.

Hi J.,

I went really early through menopause due to a hystorectomy. I went to my doc and had blood drawn to find out which hormone is out of balance...once you find that out then there are many options to go with.

I was having problems with the estrogen part so I took BLACK COHOSH, Magnisium/Calcium/Potassium and an under the tongue Vit B 12/B 6 and Folic Acid....plus lots of prayer ;-)

That helped me totally... Also, I went to Healthy Approach In Grapevine and made an appointment with Bryan the nutritionist. He does half hour consultation free...and he is great....their number is ###-###-####.

Good Luck!

Arbonne has a natural balancing cream enriched with botanicals, designed to help retore balance. It comes in a self metered pump and you apply it in the evening, or in the am and pm if you need a stronger dose, to your soft tissue. You would need the PHYTO Prolief. If you'd like to try some or have any further questions please let me know. There is a 45 day money back gaurantee on all Arbonne products, so you can try it with no risk! Hi - I am 57 and just started going through menopause this summer and it was driving me crazy too. I did a bunch of research and have figured out a combination that works for me - no more hot flashes!!! I am taking: Omega 3 Fish Oil l000 mg. (I take 3, but started out with 2 and that worked for awhile - got at Costco), Lecithin 1200 mg. 2 a day (any health food store), E Complex 400 IU - 1 (ordered it online - its called Unique E - suppose to be the best), Udo's 3-6-9 Oil Blend - 2 a day (any health food store)and Estroven Maximum Strength - 2 a day(Costco or any health food store). I take half of it after I eat breakfast and half after dinner and I feel great - hope this works for you because it has been a lifesaver for me! Good lubck.

Go to Kroger and look in the vegatable section for frozen Edimame. If you don't know what that is, it's soybeans. Eat a bag of that every day (it's filling enough to have for lunch) and it will help!

I am 43 and started it years ago then had medically induced menopause because of hysterectomy. I suffered for years then found a doctor in Colleyville, Dr Lida Aghdan, she did a blood test and I was low on testerone-thus the hot flashes, not sleeping well, and started me on a bio-identical progesterine. Last year I had to add hormone patch back in, but she is currently writing a book on the subject, as long as you have more testerone than egosterine it is not cancer forming! Her # is ###-###-####

I am 54, and am well into menopause. I never considered taking anything but the natural stuff, because after all, Menopause is a natural part of life, so why do we need to take artificial hormones to make our body think we aren't doing this?
I've had the hot flashes and night sweats, for a few months pretty often, but already they are lessening. My worse thing was mood swings, I thought I was going crazy, until one day it hit me that I had not had a period for a while, and I realized what was happening to me. So I went to the health food store and loaded up on herbs that calmed me, St. John's Wort, Kava Kava, Valerian root, and a mineral that the chiropractor suggested, but now I can't remember what it was. I took so many things that I kind of went into lala land, and had to back off until I found a dosage that worked.
That was last summer, now things have evened out enough that I don't take anything anymore.
Just flow with it, it will be over soon.
And since others have given the ages of their children, mine are ages 32, 29, 22, 20, 17, 14, 11, 4, 3, and our 11 month old foster son will soon be added to our brood as a forever child! We also have nine grandchildren, four of who practically live here!

Hi J.,

I have had much the same problem, and have used Phyto-ProLief from Arbonne for several years. It's a great product, a 1/4 teaspoon pump cream that you rub on your skin, a different area each night. Begin with day 12 of your cycle, use daily until day 28, then your cycle should begin. It costs about $35, and will last 3 months. There also is a money back guarantee. I'll send literature if you'd like. E-mail me at ____@____.com.

I didn't have the awful hot flashes, but did have migraine headaches, that nearly killed me. I have maybe one migrain headache per year now, previously it was one or two a month. I have a few warm flashes, not nothing serious, certainly not a full blown hot flash.

Call Dr. Jeanine Thomas ###-###-####. She is an MD, but has also studied (in England) & prescribes estrogen creams made directly from plants containing natural estrogen. She uses them herself. She also moniters how well they are working for you by having a saliva test done, which is more accurate for hormone levels than blood work. She is located in Arlington on Matlock & Arbrook.

Hi J.,

What usually works for my patients or what usally test is adrenal supplements. When the ovaries senesce the adrenal glands should take over but as with most people living today we live a stress filled life, eat alot of refined sugars and over indulge in things that bascially wear down the gland so when its time for it to step up to the job as in menopause it can not so you get higher incidence of symptoms. I hope this helps, the company I usually use is standard process and the product is desiccated adrenal. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me ____@____.com

Nature's Sunshine has a great line of products. I found a blend they make called CX which has the black cohosh in it and more herbs that can help you. I went thru menopause at 47, only lasted less than a year taking these. Today I am 52 and have had no problems for years. Everyone is different according to your diet. Make sure you keep protein in your diet because that's where the thinning of your hair comes from, lack of protein. You can find Nature's products online or in Family Health stores located in Mesquite and Garland. they have two stores and great employees whom can educate you.

I am right there with you but really a bit ahead of you and I am only 47. My mom was an early one too. My doc recomended Eastroven (over the counter) first and it worked for a while. Start with that and then go from there. Also I kept a glass of ice water by my bed and took a sip when the flash started and that really helped.
Good Luck!

I am 42 and this past Christmas was shopping and started feeling really hot! I then realized I was menopausal. I have been very seriously confronting this all year and have found stretches like balancing stretches work to strengthen your body and to focus yourself. Standing and centering your body. Do many things and always find your center. It really helps! Eating, EAT! This time I believe is very important to listen to your body. I don't mean eat horribly but eat very wise. Beans, kale, plums, natural fruit and herbs for tea drinks, black eyed beans, and foods rich in vitamins and minerals. Supplements if you can't stand some things like fish oils and vitamin E, magnesium, Zinc and just very healthy foods. Breads but grained breads or banana nuts and raisins. Do you get the idea. Don't worry about a little fat, you need all these things for your bones and teeth. Your body is almost 50 and you need a year or two now to get ready for a decline the rest of your life. We build only during certain times in our lives. Think of when you were a child. Chubby then a growth spurt right? Well, think a little chubby now and a growth spurt! Old women are thin and they have to watch their bones and well, maybe now is the time to think HEALTHY not what about my sex life? I found eating made my sex life great. Check out my videos on youtube. Kindof strange and corny but shoot! the sweating was weird and weight gain yuck! So, I put it on video and thought why not! My name is P. H. and I started the Feminin Planet. Just because of menopause. I thought why focus just on menopause I am a woman and have a lot to say to all women so that's why I have it all out there. I exercise and I look like I"m not me. But, it's 42 years old and it's real. Check out my facebook. I'm open to all women chatting and doing my facebook as an open forum. Just use my name. I work and it's just for information and chatting. I choose to call it menahhpause. I didn't feel like being with my boyfriend of 11 years and needed a break. There is a spot not where I urinate but under or maybe it's the same but I felt an oil or thicker reality there and it felt strange and I purchased light days panty liners. Well, that felt really good sometimes. Like this reality of the sweating was cleaning my system of the hormones that were just ready to leave my body. They left in this way and it felt AMAZING. I mean well, I was happy to be a woman and to have a female reality that was quite nice. Not all the time, just a few times. I work from home so it worked out fine. I recommend having me time. I also found my boyfriend found me quite sexy getting heavier? So, keeping him off me was hard but fun at the same time. Well, I hope I helped and thanks for reading what I wrote. It feels great. I had no idea and my family and friends were definitely not sharing! Great to have to count on strangers! Have a great day and good luck! P. 11

J. - I hear you girl. I am 48 and have been going thru it for about 1 and 1/2 years myself. I believe it is called "black cohash" which is a natural herb you can take. You can find it at any real health food store. I have a liquid form that you put in water and it seemed to help. My hot flashes are not what they use to be and I have not been taking it for a while but I would highly recommend the health food stores and they can assist you. My doctor originally told me about it. Hope this helps. I have a 27 year old and a grandbaby of 20 mths.

I went throught that when I was 45. I do know what you are going through. I was working and it really got bad because I would need a shower after I had one of those attacks. I only found that Black Cohash with Soy worked the best and then I got just over the counter some Evista, however, you might do some homework and ask the pharamist or Health food store what they recommend. Different ones work better for some people than others. Good Luck it was a horrible experience but it should not last to long. Mine lasted for 3 years. I have heard of some that last for 10 years. I wish you the best. I am now 56 and feeling great and do not take anything except over the counter which my Doctor has me taking Caltrate over the counter now. Good Luck.

I will be 52 in just a few days. I started menopause at 47! I am still having hot flashes but, they are not so bad now. One herb you can try is black cohash. You can find it at walmart or just about any drug store. It is not expensive. Also your Dr. may put you on a low dose of prempro, that's a hormone replacement. It has been a whole year (April24th) this year i haven't had a period. It was alful for me to go through this menopause. I have lost my sex drive completely. I don't know what to do about that either!!, If i can help i am here any time. Good Luck & take it easy. K.

Due to some medical issues, I started menopause symptoms in my mid 20's! Imagine being told you'll have those symptoms for 20 years :( Luckily I have several Aunts and (now) my mom going through it and they pointed me in the direction of PROMENSIL and it's wonderful! I always choose the natural path first and this is all natural (I get it at the health food store) Caution: be very careful with doses of black cohosh and evening primrose - every person will react differently and you don't want to take evening primrose for extended periods of time. Take some time on their website and I think you'll find some support and relief! www.promensilusa.com

Oh sister, welcome to my world. My best advice is to contact Dr. Margaret Christensen in Dallas. She put me on a natural progesterone cream that worked like a miracle for about ten months and recently put me on an estrogen cream as well. Apparently cutting back on alcohol and of course exercising will help alleviate the symptoms.

Dear J. T,

I suggest soy, soy and more soy! I even switched to drinking soy lattes, instead of cappuccino. Silk makes a great latte flavored milk too. The vanilla Silk is actually pretty good too. Mixing Silk with Ovaltine makes a great chocolate "shake". Of course, you can purchase soy supplements too. Flax seed oil and lecithin are good for you too, but soy seems to be the very best individual supplement.

Take heart. It won't last forever, and it's something we all go through. Remember that when this is over (menopause), you won't have any more periods! Yippee! You can't imagine how much I DON'T miss having them! I'm 52 and loving it!

I am a believer in bio-identical hormone replacement. Go to Half Price books and look for Suzanne Somer's "Ageless" or "The Sexy Years". Then check out my doctor, Dr. McWherter, at www.femcentre.com - but I will warn you - it takes 6 months or more to get an appointment with him. But you should be able to get in to see his PA sooner. He has offices in Fort Worth and Colleyville. He has me on Tri-est and my hot flashes are drastically reduced and the ones I do have are not as bad and do not last as long. Sex is no longer excrutiatingly painful and my libido, which was non-existant, is returning.
Until then 800 IU of NATURAL vitamin E daily may give you a little relief from the hot flashes.
Best Wishes,

I'm 60 yrs old and started menopause early too. I suffered with hot flashes for yrs and finally found a website www.supplementspot.com. It's their progesterone cream. It comes in a jar or a pump. I preferred the jar, for some reason it just worked better for me. You just rub it on am. and pm. If you order through their chat screen it is 10% cheaper. You can ask any questions in chat for information on any herb. I've used their other herbs and like them also. They ship pretty quick and I've always had good service. I've tried other brands and this one seemed to work the best for me. My hot flashes have slowed down so I'm not using it anymore. My Dr told me the hot flashes usually last till your 60. Praise God that's where I am so I hope they are on their way out the door :) Good luck, it's a frustrating trip.

My Dr told me to take Black Kohash which is herbal. It seemed to work while I was taking it. However, after a few months, another Dr took me off of it due to other problems and it would not mix with other medications. Always check with your Dr if you are taking other medications before you take it, even if it is herbal because some of them do not interact with RX drugs.
