Seeking Info/advice on Vaccinations for 18Month Old

My son will be turning 18 months in two weeks and will be up for the Prevnar and Hep A vaccinations. I have read a few articles about the advent of autism in children around the 18 month mark after receiving vaccinations. Does anyone know which vaccinations are suspect and what web-sites I can go to for more info?

Hey Angela,

The suspicion comes from the fact that for many years vaccines had mercury in them - some still do. Pure Mercury is a nerotoxin that your body can't get rid of and that builds up in your system over time if you become exposed to it often. The fact that it sometimes shows up at about 18 months and that vaccines are taken at this time as well is an unfortunate coincidence. Most vaccines now use therimerisol (not sure of the spelling) instead of the mercury. Plus, earlier vaccines would have been exposures as well and it is something that BUILDS up to cause problems over time - unless someone were to ingest a whole bunch at once somehow. There are many other environmental exposures to this heavy metal today that if autism IS caused by mercury are more likely to be the problem. Many fish, for example, Tuna, contain quite a bit of the metal comparatively speaking. As a special Ed teacher, I have also learned that while Autism might not run in a family some of the symptoms of Autism and Aspberger's syndrome - a less severe version - do seem to run in families so their may be a genetic component as well such as a lower level of tolerance to a combination of environmental factors for example. It is far more complex a disorder than to be caused by any one thing based on what I've seen and know about it.

Having said all of that, I prefer to be choosy about which vaccines my two year old gets. If it isn't one of the big ones, I don't wanter her to have it. For example, they are now giving a vaccine called D-Tap that simply prevents a mild bout with diarea caused by a mild disease that has never caused any deaths and only causes minor discomfort for a couple of days IF the child gets it. The reason I am picky about this one is that vaccines are not well tested before being used in the same way that drugs are and I don't want my child being the Guinea Pig. Not because of Autism. So, do your research and make your desision but don't let people talk you out of having your child protected from Hepatitis because of a coincidental correlation! The reason Autism often starts showing up at 18 months is because that is when we are able to start seeing the symptoms. Before then, they aren't developmentally ready to do a number of things expected after then. If they don't start doing those things (talking, interacting, pretend play, etc.) then they are watched for other signs of autism. It is not neccessarily because they don't already have it at that point.

Go To Dr Sears web site and he has excellent info
on vaccines. Dr Bob Sears also just wrote a book in
Oct on vaccines that I have read. I am now using his
vaccine schedule for my twins and they are 13 months old.
The biggie now is the MMR that they receive at 1 year. A lot
of parents are splitting that up or delaying for now. Check out the web page or book.

Check out "The Vaccine Book" by Dr. Sears. I have found it to be a fair and balanced explanation of all the vaccines and their risks. He is not anti-vaccine, but offers an alternative schedule to spread them out, as he feels four or five at a time is too much for a little body to handle. Perhaps you could talk to your ped about spacing out the shots around that time.

Check this out:Shocking news about the latest combo vaccine
Dear Friend,
For years, I've been sounding the warning about the potential dangers of vaccines. I've told you that their effectiveness is questionable, and their side effects unknown. And I'm sad to say that my warnings have finally come to pass. Recently, a Merck & Co. vaccine caused some children to suffer from fever-related convulsions.
The vaccine is called ProQuad, and it's a combination of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and chickenpox vaccines. It turns out that the toddlers who were given ProQuad – ages 12 to 23 months – had twice as many seizures as the kids who received the chickenpox vaccine and the MMR vaccine separately.
Incredibly, the results actually caused a federal advisory panel on vaccines to step back from recommending ProQuad over the individual vaccines. This marks a rare – if tepid – step down from the usual government endorsement of all things inoculation-related.
It's no wonder these kids are experiencing adverse reactions. The amount of chickenpox antigen found in ProQuad is – are you ready for this? – FIVE TIMES higher than in the stand-alone chickenpox vaccine. So not only does ProQuad have measles, mumps and rubella – it's also the equivalent of five chickenpox shots. All in one shot. For children.

Just one example of the dangers of vaccines. The increase of autism is out the roof--mainly because of the multiple vaccines that contain thimerosol mercury preservative. But babies do not need all these vaccinations. Very unlikely to get Hep A for an 18 month old. check out more at www.douglassreport.com Dr. William Campbell Douglass

There are always waivers available. If you send me your email address, I will send you a directive on this. The 2 main reasons that are recognized by law are: Religious reasons and pre-existing medical conditions; such as allergies and weak immune. With difficult school officials they recommend sending certain certified letters right away.

This is such a controversial subject. I would recommend reading Dr Bob Sears new book THe Vaccine Book. He does a great job of breaking down the pros and cons of every vaccine as well as the recommended schedule. It empowers parents to avoid the "all or none" approach and take the matters education. It's all risk vs benefit. And while the public as a whole may benefit from the set national vaccine protocol, they don't care about the individual- your and my child- who may be one of the ones who wouldnt benefit. Dr Sears has an alternative recommened vaccine schedule you may wish to look into (staggering, separating, etc). Also, for great discussion on the matter, go to www.mothering.com.

One more thing- in Calif, if you skip any vaccines, you can do a waiver for school entry based on philosophical beliefs as well as religious. Some states only allow religious, and others don't allow ANY (very scary in my opinion).

Don't be afraid to get educated and to then trust your instincts!

hi angela,
I was thinking of not getting my daughter vaccinated at her 18 month visit too, infact she didnt get her 18 month vacs. until she was 26 months, b/c was in doubt. But I found out that the reason that vacs were suspected to cause autism, was b/c of the mercury that they used in the vacs. But now they do not use mercury in the vacs, so the risk for autsim, are minimal now.

The newest info to come out on vaccinations and Autism (a study done over the longest period of time of any study to date) shows no link bewteen the two. The fear was the small amount of mercury that was ONCE in vaccinations was the cause. Well, the mercury was taken out over 5 years ago and the # of cases of autism is rising.
Now, vaccinations can be the cause of other harmful problems. Of course, they will only be a problem for less than 3% of children but only you can determine if that is a risk you want to take.
Just so you know, we adopted our daughter from China and even though her records show she was vaccinated in China our Ped. and our agency strongly urged us to re-vaccinate her. So she may have had twice the amount a child needs. I think the possibility of her getting Hep A or Measles is far worse than reaction to the shots (but that's easy for me to say, her reactions were mild). Her only reacation was fever and poor sleep for 1-3 days after the shots. She's 28 months old now and is done with shots until she is 4.

Go to my website www.victoryoveradhd.com
Most childhood vaccines still contain mercury. They were never recalled and have not expired yet! They're 7524 autistic students enrolled in the LAUSD. 773 more autistic students in one year. Ask your child's doctor to view the ingredients in the vaccine. You could always delay the vaccine until your son weighs more. Only one vaccine should be given at a time. The MMR contains three viruses. Too much at once especially for a little one.

The onset of autism is not just after the 18 month old vaccinations. It could be after any of them. Here's the story as it goes. We have an overload of toxins in our world 'environmental toxins' and in our food supply 'pesticides' so either mom gets them (and passes them in utero or breast milk to baby) or baby/child get them from their own diet or air exposure. If the child has a weakened immune system from any other reason or from fighting the above toxicity or possible infection from low nutritional state...then giving vaccinations is not suggested until the baby becomes strong and healed.

Truth be told, if your child is not doing IV drugs or havinig sex, contracting Hepatitis is highly UNLIKELY so why be in such a hurry to do it now?

I'd do some surfing the internet about Jenny McCarthy and her son's fight with autism as she likely has at least a handful of websites you can read more about this topic.

I see a lot of kids in our practice with 'vaccination injury' which means that they either get sick or have rashes, or just are not the same, after vaccinations, so we do topical 'detoxing' from the mercury or thimerosol or other at the site of vaccinations, and they get well.

Note that there used to be only 10 vaccinations mandatory and now there are 36 and ask yourself, and our CDC WHY?

Whatever you decide, good luck. If you want to have your child evaluated via non-invasive techniques, including QRA to see how your child's nutritional and immune status are doing, please call our office or visit our website for more info.
