Diaper or cleaning service? Or a day spa gift certificate. Babysitting? Maybe things to pamper her.

Premade dinner brought over! You can set it up with multiple people and they can have dinner every night or every other brought to them!

diapers! Or if it's something just for mom, a pedicure. That's something I love but never want to pay for, and after I had my dd someone got me one. It made me feel pretty to have nice toes, even if I didnt have time to do makeup or anything.

I am thinking maybe free babysitting for the other three children. That would allow Mom to sleep with the baby. And babysitting for Mom and Dad when they are ready to leave the new baby for a walk or dinner out. And of course babysitting and a manicure, pedicure or massage.

if she's nursing what about one of those covers that go over your head for breastfeeding?? I wish I had known about those while I was nursing. You can find them on eBay for cheap and most of the time they are home made by mothers who stay home and need extra money, so that's an added bonus.

I would go for a gift card. Somewhere like Target or the local grocery store. She probably has all the stuff she needs and this would help buy the stuff she doesn't.

Keep the older kids for an afternoon and feed them lunch, so she doesn't have to. Bring them back home at dinner time with take out.

If you aren't up to that.... offer to stay with them at HER house while she runs errands sans children (to avoid her having to "pack" anything for them).

Or if you are really feeling energetic and generous... stop by with a couple of laundry baskets and scoop up all her dirty laundry, take it to a laundry mat (so you can do it all at once) and wash, dry and fold it before bringing it back to her.

Greetings J.:
As the mother of 5 I really appreciate your thoughtfulness. I can share what others did for me and I have done just today for a family. Frozen/fresh meals are always a plus, coloring books and a long running cartoon movie for the otherchildren to enjoy, clean the house, done laundry, offers to do the shopping or stay with the children so mom can go do the shopping, read stories and entertain the children so mom can get a nap, bring lunch and a game/story or just bring food and visit with mom!, If you can help trim up the yard if that is something that needs done. Just having my friends come and help with laundry & ironing kept me from loosing it more than once the first 2months with one newborn that was in the hosptal, even a card with words of friendship is helpful. God Bless you, for doig this for her. Nana Glenda

A gift card to Safeway.com or other grocery store that delivers. She can pick out her own food and when she wants it delivered and she won't have to leave the house!

Offer to come over and clean her kitchen and/or do some laundry once or twice.

I agree with all of the other answers and would add "a meal" to the list. With a new baby and a family to feed, its hard to have great homemade meals. Usually dad ends up getting take out a lot. Delivering a homemade meal would certainly be appreciated. I would call her first, though, and tell her you'd like to bring a meal and ask her which day would be best. She'll always remember that!

Frozen dinners. Make a stack of casseroles for them. My sister & mom did this for us & we only have 1 child. It was so helpful.

Dinner or Diapers. There's never such a thing as too many diapers, or not having to cook.

Some ideas...

diapers, wipes, baby soap, Target gift card, Babies R Us gift card, baby Tylenol, baby q-tips, baby sunscreen
I loved the Moby carrier. It was so great for holding my son when he was very young (3 weeks). I could use it way before other carriers. You could maybe find one at a second hand store. They run over $30 new.
I also loved the Hooter Hider.

I am with the other moms: free babysitting, a nice cooked meal! Maybe run some of her errands for her. I think just little simple gestures would the best present!!

I just brought over a meal for my neighbor who has just had her third. Also I got her some bath lotion and body lotion from Bath and Body Works. My girls are on call for her when she needs them without pay. I intend to send them over to the house when the daddy goes back to work next week.

All these ideas are great--I especially recommend taking the other three kids for an afternoon or two, sending in dinner, and for the older children, maybe subscribing to magazines for each of them to help entertain themselves ( Your Big Backyard, Ranger Rick, Highlights, the children's National Geographic).
