My laptop keeps freezing up, and I'm guessing I have some type of a virus. Does anyone have a service they would recommend. I've used Geek Squad at Best Buy but I was very disaapointed by their service in the past. THANK YOU!

What can I do next?

My husband is an IT man for the government and he sometimes does work on computers and laptops on the side for a very reasonable price. He is an absolute computer whiz!! We live in south Kansas City right by Overland Park and my hubby was wondering where you are located at.

If you are interested in his help, his # is ###-###-####

Don't know where you live, but I've used Hypertech Computers a few times for various computers and they are amazing! All the guys there are very friendly and explain things in plain terms for a computer idiot like me! I think they have a couple locations, but the one we use is in Lenexa at about 87th and Neiman. I too used the Best Buy people and was not happy! Check these guys out and you won't be disappointed!

Hi M.,
My Husband and I used to own our own computer repair company and recommend AVG antivirus software, it is free and works great. Here is the link to down load it. http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000... choose the top one it is the most recent.
I would trust the guys at Hyper-Tech that is where my Husband buys all his parts. Also my Husband still does work on the side he charges $89 trip charge that includes the first half hour and $80 an hour after that. Let me know through an personal message if you need his number as it is his cell phone and he does this more as a favor to people who were our customers before we closed the business. Good luck wherever you go. Also if it is a virus it should be about an hour and a half of work generally. If you know how to back up your data and reinstall Windows yourself that would be the cheapest and most effective way to solve the problem. Good luck again.

For future reference, next time, get a MAC computer. I've never gotten a virus. They are the superior tool in the computer world. Nothing better and you can get all your help and training for FREE at the Apple stores.

My tenant, Bob Region, can probably help you. ###-###-####.

I would download your important files to a cd-rom or jumpkey and restore or reformat your computer. that usually works for me. I usually restore mine about every 6-12 months as that seems to be when my computer starts slowing down or virus scanners start detecting problems that can't be deleted. Most laptops have this built into the system and is fairly easy to figure out. I am not one that is good at keeping my temporary files emptied often or defragging so it usually gets reformatted more often but with the kids always downloading stuff from the internet it poses a higher risk for viruses so we just deal with trying to remember to save the important stuff more often because I have actually had my laptop crash a few times in the 3 years I have owned it but most of the time I get my stuff off before it crashes otherwise you lose everything but can still usually get to the restore so haven't had to take it to a computer shop to get it up and running well again.

I second the Mac vote! I finally convinced my husband (a life-long PC user) that our next computer should be a Mac. In the meantime, try BE Tek in Waldo. Good luck!

Before taking it to a computer place, try this website, it has a free scan to find and eliminate the virus it's free! http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ I found this site when I was getting phishing emails from ebay, they would tell me that a virus was attached to the email and to go to this site. My husband teaches computer classes and has used this after finding out about it, it will usually help without losing any info on the computer, when you take it in they usually will take everything off the computer, then put only programs back on, this looses all your info! You have to backup your own information if you do this and most people don't really understand this. Hope this helps you to fix your own problem. Also there are websites out there from which you can download your own virus protection free.
