My computer decided to die about a month ago so now we're looking into a new laptop for our home. (I'm using my husbands work computer at the moment) I've always had a PC but my husbands work recently switched him over to a Mac and he's very happy with it. Now, he thinks we should get a Mac for our home. I am very interested in photography and take lots of pictures and enjoy editing them and creating projects in Photoshop Elements. I also create a lot of documents using Word. Other than that I use the Internet. My question is... what do you have and are you happy with it? Any suggestions for me or things I should consider before purchasing a new laptop?

Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone for your opinions! I'm delighted to say that I finally have a new computer and after reading all of your responses and using my husband's computer all summer I decided to make the change to a Mac and I couldn't be happier! I'm writing this from my brand new MacBook Pro. :)

Mac! We are a Mac family and we love them. They are stable, easy to use, and rarely have problems. Apple has a terrific support team if you do have an issue.
Once you go Mac, you'll never go back!

Nothing but Mac for me since 1990 and I've been more than happy. I usually get a good 4 to 5+ years out of each one.

My husband and I each have a MacBook Pro for home use, and I have a Mac Pro (tower) at work for graphic design and photo editing and my husband has an iMac for his product design work. We've had a lot of Macs over the years and nearly all have been trouble-free.

Mac all the way. I'm a graphic artist and amateur photographer, and Mac is by far the best for these uses. Also, the several Apple computers we've used over the years have been wonderfully stable, with remarkably few repair problems (besides aging out) and very little tendency to crash.

I loved my Mac when I had one... But they are so darn EXPENSIVE!! With how quickly technology is evolving, I can never bring myself to shell out so much money for something that will be obsolete in 3 years. :/

I don't remember writing this question but I could have! Our interests are the same.

We have always had a PC and I have enjoyed photoshop elements. I have had my huge collection of photos on various external hard drives, along with our computer. We got a Mac a few months ago. I am still frustrated with not understanding the differences in it. I might have said a few bad words... I think it will get better but I am not in love.

What I do enjoy is haveing ALL my pictures in iPhoto! I have printed old ones that I forgot about. I am in process of creating a slideshow for my pastor's 30th year at our church. It makes that process pretty easy.

I can't locate my elements disk yet so I still edit and work in elements on the PC.
I don't know if I answered your question but I would say its a process.

We have a mac for the kids to use because I just didn't feel like dealing with keeping the computer clean. Other than that I have windows or android based systems.

Each has their good points but for me I work with windows based systems. I know how to program them, fix them, I have bonded with them, I am vested in them and I don't feel like learning another system.

Most people aren't so vested in their systems.

I'm terrible with computers, really don't know a thing about them. We have a PC desktop which in my opinion, is a pain to learn how to use and PC's don't last long. My husband got me a MacBook Pro 4yrs ago and I cannot imagine ever going back to a PC. My FIL only uses Mac and he has had his desktop for 10 yrs, it looks and has the speed of a brand new Mac.

We've been Mac owners for close to a decade, and have been very happy. We are only on our 2nd machine. NO issues.

We also have the gamut of other Mac devices (multiple ipods and iphone, ipad family). They all work together beautifully, too. I don't have any experience with photos on PC equipment... but they are fun on Macs.

My kids were both given laptops (PC) by a favorite aunt for their birthdays about 2 years ago. They used them for online school. They had many more issues with accessing school items online than I ever did on my Mac. And now that they aren't in online school and use them solely for "fun", they still gravitate to my Mac or Ipad instead of firing up their laptops. Every time. I have to boot them off of my machine and then, they will wait until I am done, rather than go turn on their own laptop.
Does that help?

I was so surprised when my son, who has used a Mac all year for his computer course and all his schoolwork, told me that he wants a PC to go to college. He said he likes a PC better. Great for me, since a Mac costs so much more...

I LOVE my Mac Air! I've used PCs since the 1980 (was a computer programmer), but can't imagine going back now.

I had to keep a PC for many years longer than I wanted because the work I did had a program that wouldn't work on Mac. But once I stayed home and my PC crapped out I went with Mac (my husband is a total Mac-head and we have pretty much everything they make). I had hit the point where I realized my PCs were just about disposable - my Dell would die about 6 months outside of warranty, and the cost to fix it was so close to the cost to replace it we would just buy a new one. That's just not right!

You will have a bit of a learning curve because the programs are similar but not quite the same, but it shouldn't take you long to get past it. Good luck!

I have a Dell XPS 14Z and I LOVE it. We have always had Dell products and LOVE them. I've never had any issues with any of them. This is my personal 2nd Dell XPS laptop, hubby has had 3 ( 1 was stolen and 1 was company issued by the company he worked for at the time) and daughter has had 1 (still working and used as a backup if needed)

When daughter entered the 11th grade we purchased MacBook Pro for her. She needed a good reliable laptop for school use. She uses her laptop a LOT for presentations, movies up to 1/2 hr for class, most homework projects are submitted online to teachers, etc. She LOVES her MacBook Pro. It was pricey, about $2500 which was about $1000 over my new Dell but it is worth every penny. She just graduated high school and her laptop is still perfect. She should be able to easily get through college with this laptop.

The ONLY reason I did not purchase the MacBook Pro when I upgraded was because I run our company on my laptop. I am in sync with my accountant and hubby as far as QuickBooks, etc. IF I had gone the Mac route, I would have to of changed my QuickBooks system and I would not be compatible with the accountant or hubby. It would have meant completely changing the way I currently work with QuickBooks, payroll, etc. So the change was not worth it for me at this time.

So to answer your question..... we have both and love both.

I go for PC for 2 reasons.
1) Mac is a LOT more expensive for a laptop (or any computer). I have an HP laptop and it's half the price of a Mac. It does everything I need it to do.
2) The learning curve. I've been using a PC for years, and when I've had to use a Mac (a particular annual conference I go to provides a Mac at the conference while I'm there) I can't do anything. Everything on Mac is counterintuitive for me and I'm so slow to work without a 'right click' shortcut. I don't have the patience to get through the learning curve to switch. And my experience is that it's a big learning curve.
