Hello! I am trying to decide whether or not I should home school my daughter. She will be 5 next August and will be starting kindergarten. If I send her to public school, she'll go to Parkway in Lewisville. Does anybody have any children there? Is is a good school? If I home school, what kind of curriculum should I use? Any advice on how to stick to a good routine? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I can't help you about whether or not Parkway is a good school. However, with your question on homeschooling, I'd would be happy to answer any questions you might have. I also want to add (since this seems to come up a lot when it comes to homeschooling) that homeschool children have PLENTY of opportunity to interact with other children and people of all age groups on a regular basis. I've homeschooled for 10 years and my children have never lacked "social" interaction. There are studies which prove that homeschool children do not lack social skills in comparison to public school children. Here's an article about socialization:http://www.homeschool.com/articles/Socialization/default.asp and here's some information on studies: http://www.chayas.com/homeschoolsoc1.htm

As far as curriculum, a lot depends on your child's learning style and your teaching style. You might want to visit Home Educator's Resource on Main in Lewisville. I'm sure someone there would be able to show you different curriculum. Also, there is an annual homeschool book fair every May in Arlington where you can view a number of different curriculums.

I can't tell you what would be best for your daughter and really, neither can anyone else. You are her mom and know her best. Just do your own research into schools and homeschooling so you'll be able to make that choice based on the information you obtain (and knowing what would best suit your family).

I just joined this amazing website and this is my first post. WOW. This is a great resource.

I am a homeschool mom in Lewisville. I have been homeschooling for 6 years. My kids went to public school in elementary school during various seasons of life. We have had them home for 6 years. LOVE it. I have 4 kids aged 10-16.

I recently started a Charlotte Mason Homeschool support group and we will have our first meeting on Tuesday May 5th from 7:30-9:30 PM.

If you are interested in investigating the theories of home education, this would be a good place to start. Many of the moms who are joining this group are new to homeschooling or considering homeschooling, but there will also be many seasoned homeschoolers in the group as well.

We have a yahoo group too. If you want to consider attending our once a month meetings, feel free to request membership on our yahoo group. I am the moderator and will approve you.

I hope this is helpful.

I personally don't home school because I feel it is important that they have that social interaction. I am sorry that I can't help.

I make a weekly plan on my computer then I can cross it off as I've finished it. We always start at the same time every day, that helps stay on track.

I am an experienced teacher, so winging it doesn't phase me. I like the out-side the box style teaching. I don't use much boxed curriculum, however, I'd love to show you some of what I've got. It's so much easier to get a chance to look at curriculum before you buy. I hate taking little kids to the store and then not really getting a chance to look through stuff. I've got a three year old boy, too, so you're welcome to come play and talk shop. I also live in Lewisville, so I'm just around the corner.
