So my friend is in her late 50's. She has been a waitress most of her life. A survivor for the most part trying to make ends meet and surrvived two marriages. She tried the self employeed businesses of realstate, body bug, and a health product usonia ???
Anyway, she wants to now start researching a job that she can do from this point in her life on. Something that she can train for and won't cost too much money or time to learn and invest in. She needs to make at least $13 hour to make it worth her bills and needs for retirment. Any thoughts of a career plan for her ? I mentioned Massage Theorpy and Pharmasist asst. I think these are expensive schooling though. But thought it was short term at least. Any thoughts ??????

What can I do next?

I totally agree with the PP-elder care is a hot field. Look into companies that help the elderly retaing their lifestyle. This is something that she can even start her own company doing. I would think esp in AZ there would be a lot of retirees out there.

I found out locally that Mayo Clinic pays people to become phlebotomists and lab technicians. They pay for all the schooling with a commitment to work for them for X years. I would higly recommend your friend pick out some things she enjoys, and speak to people in the industry on options... even if it isn't in a lab as suggested, there are probably other opportunities out there if you look.

I was listening to a writer about following your passion, and something she said struck a chord with me:
Sadly enough... people are now working into their 80s quite often, so it is never too late to change your mind, and do something you like. Do it...TODAY! Even going to medical school or law school makes sense when you are in your 40s because you aren't even half way through your average work life...

So, with that being said she may have another 30+ years of working...she better do something she likes. I would focus more on what will make her happy vs. just a job to fill in the cracks. If she follows her passion she will find something!

medical transcriptions...at home sometimes, from a desk, not on your feet. Or any kind of data entry computer systems training.

My cousin had a reading problem and failed the massage therapy state test three times so she can't try again. She went into debt for nothing.
If your friend has any issues, she might want to seek out help at a Adult Literacy place. My friend's husband got help and passed the civil service, then got a government job that pays double plus has benefits.
If she is up to it, maids here get at least $20 per hour. Also, if she is bondable, she could work for a home companion or home health agency and make $13 or more. You help an elderly person with activities of daily living(bathing, dressing, cleaning, shopping, taking pills, paying bills, etc..)

I forgot the actual name for this but they are like a transcriber in the courts. They sit in on trials and record what everyone is saying. THere are schools all over that train for this. Yes, it costs money, but they make a lot of money too.

Being a Massage Therapist is a VERY physical job and not something she'll be able to do for even 6 hours a day.

Try medical coding or medical billing.

Well, she could do an elderly day care too. I have a great grandma with Alzheimers and they send her to one every day for a few hours so great grandpa can get things done at home. It is less tiring than child care because they want to do crafts still but aren't looking to run around
