Seeking Advice About Ear Tubes - Should the Surgery Be Done at Children's Mercy

My 20-month son has a great peditrician, Dr. Winburn. She recommended that he see an ENT, Dr. Metz. She said Metz is the best. Metz recommended ear tubes for my son due to repeated ear infections. I agree that ear tubes are a good option, but Dr. Metz only does the ear tube surgery at Olathe Medical Center, not Children's Mercy. I have concerns about this. I think the anesthesolgists at Children's Mercy have more experience sedating kids than those at Olathe Medical Center. Has anyone had any experience with Dr. Metz? If so, did the surgery at Olathe Medical Center go ok? Alternatively, does anyone have any recommendations for an ENT who will do the surgery at Children's Mercy. Thanks for your help!

Childrens Mercy has an ENT Clinic at the Hospital. My sisters little girl goes there and she has been very pleased with them. I cant remember her doctors name though. Sorry. You might give them a call ###-###-#### and ask for the ENT clinic.

Dr. Dan Bruegger. He is out of Children's Mercy and KU. He is an ENT and also teaches at KU. My child is autistic and he has a GREAT bedside manner, easy to talk to and his staff is awesome. He was recommended by our ENT in TX and he is fabulous. If you cannot find him online...I have his card here somewhere.

L., Dr. Metz does LOTS of tube placement surgeries, as does his partner. Olathe Med is fully capable of handling this. Their staff is kid friendly and efficient. Your son would only be anesthetized for about 5 min., just long enough to make the incision in the eardrum and place the tube. I agree that if your child has very difficult problems that Children's Mercy is the place to go. My sons have had tubes placed and toncils removed at Olathe and we had good experiences.

Good Luck, M.

Hi L.,

My story is an interesting one..I first met Dr Metz 17 years ago this month when I had surgery for thyroid cancer at KU Med Ctr. He was the Chief Resident on my case. Even back then, he was wonderful. Then 16 years later, my daughters pediatrican advised us to have her tonsils removed and who did he recommend? I, honestly, thought, there is no way this is the same man. Sure enough, there he stood 16 years older, the same doc. He and his staff were absolutely wonderful. My daughter had no unusual complications and we were in and out easily with her tonsils. I am not normally a fan of Olathe Med but I am certainly a fan of Dr. Metz and his staff.
My daughter was 8 months old when she had her tubes put in when we lived in Tx and I was so worried. The procedure from the time they took her back to the time they told me she was doing great was about 15 min. You, honestly, have nothing to worry about!

L.,
I hope you get a lot of response from this because I'm not sure my advice will make you feel any better. I have heard over & over (many times by doctors) that if you are doing anything with children they need to be at Children's Mercy. We are blessed to live here so how could we not take advantage of the best for our children? I am like you, scared more of the anetheseologist than the doctor. I have heard that Dr. Metz is awesome. but, who will be assigned to put your baby to sleep & wake him up? So, my advice ask your ped to recommend someone from Children's Mercy. I know Julie Wei is fabulous! One of the BEST! My daughter has seen her for sinus infections! She's amazing. I'm pretty sure she is at CM! Give it a try! If you really want to stick with Dr. Metz ask him what the procedure is at OMed for children.Do they have anest. that work with JUST children? Good Luck!

L.,
I have had surgery @Olathe Med, & had a good experience (Dr. Metz's partner). I was a nurse there too & know a lot of the anesthesiologist there. THey do a good job. Dr. Metz is one of the best ENTs, I would trust his judgement. Tubes have made a huge improvement for my boys.

hi L.! We also see Dr Winburn and Dr Metz. my son is only 6 months old. He has had 2 surgeries & needs another. One was performed at Children's Mercy. The other by Dr Metz at Olathe Med (tubes in ears). By far we had a better experience at Olathe Med. We met dr Metz on a Mon. He performed the surgery on my then 3 month old that wed (noramlly this procedure is not done at this young of age). As we left the surgery, my husband made a comment that said it all..."I feel like our best friend just operated on our child". Dr Metz is fantastic as is his office staff. I highly recommend using him and not thinking twice about it. I could write more, about how smoothly EVERY aspect of the surgery went w/ olathe med (from setting the appt to follow through). I'm telling you they are fantastic. Tell Dr Winburn & Dr Metz little Ethan says hi:) If you want to talk further feel free to email me back & I'll give you my number.

I have used Dr Metz for my child and have been extremely happy with him, my son had reoccurring ear infections for years and until we went to Dr Metz they continued. My son has had to have ear tubes 3 times and I was worried about it, but all has worked out fine. I am glad that I was referred to him.

I scrub ENT at Children's and I recommend Dr Tom Eyen, Pam Nicklaus, Dan Brueggar, Julie Wei, Robert Weatherly, Adrianne Latz or Tamikia Wakefield.
They are all excellent!

My son has had 2 sets of tubes from Dr. Metz and they have all been positive experiences. The last surgery, we inserted another set of PE tubes, had adenoids scraped & lengual frenulum clipped and all within 15/20 minutes! My kiddo was up and about within a couple of hours eating popsicles! Best of luck in your decision.

My daughter had tubes put in at 13 mos at omc. It was a great experience--you wouldn't have even known that we did anything like that that day! Nothing but praise for it. I think you'd be surprised at how many they probably do there.
