Hello, I am 35 weeks pregnant and my baby girl is measuring at 6 lbs,11oz (which is where she should be at 37 weeks). I do not have gestational diabetes and neither my husband nor I were large babies. I was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience. My doctor wants to induce at 37 weeks, after an amnio is done to make sure her lungs are fully developed. I am just concerned as to why she could be so big. Obviously I would rather have a big, healthy baby I just want to make sure everything is ok. I have only gained 20 lbs throughout my entire pregnancy so it just seems odd that she is so big. Have I done anything wrong? Please send me back your comments.

What can I do next?

All three of my children we on the bigger side(8 and 1/2 lbs to 9 lbs.)Two were born right on their due dates and the third was a week early. Neither my husband or I were large babies.(only 7lbs.) It really is an individual thing. My first pregnancy I only gained 23 pounds and 30 with the other 2 but I was older then. I have friends who have had 10lb. babies. It's up to you, but if the baby's lungs are ready at 37 weeks I don't see a problem.

I think a lot of drs sadly, tell mothers this to get them to induce or to have a c-section bcse it's more conveniet for the DOCTORS...I know of mothers who had 'normal' sized babies delivered by c-section bcse their drs said they were going to have a large baby...same for induction...
I would just do what feels right for you- keep asking questions...

Hi R.! My doctor said the same thing about my son. They thought he was going to be huge. At 37 weeks she said he measured about 7 pounds and sent me for a last sonogram to be sure and then they said he was 8 pounds and that if I waited to have him he would be huge. I was induced about two weeks early. I had to do the induction twice because the first day nothing happened... just sat around hooked up to monitors and wasn't allowed to eat or drink a think... annoying. The second day worked and my son was born a whopping 7lbs 8ozs. He wasn't that big. What they don't tell you is that the sonogram can be off a pound... in either direction. If I had it to do all over again I wouldn't be induced. I really just think doctors like to have these things scheduled as much as possible and try to make first time moms believe that that is the best way.

Hi R.,

Well the good news is that you've only gained 20 pounds! I gained 40 with each of my pregnancies.
Both of my babies were measuring large as well. I had midwives in both instances and I was induced both times.
With my son (now 20 months), my midwife suggested induction following a sonogram at 38 weeks. He was born w/ no complicatiions weighing 8lbs 4oz.
With my dauughter (now 3months), I was HUGE!!! at 39 weeks and following a sonogram I was induced w/ no complications. She weighed 8lbs 13oz.
So yes, the sonogram can be off 20% in either direction, but it is a pretty good determinate. I am not so sure i would go ahead with the amnio--it's a pretty invasive procedure and by the sound of it, doesn't seem really necessary.
And i should also mention that i delivered my children vaginaly with no tearing or stitches!
So perhaps you can hold out until the 38th week--which is considered full term, the baby's lungs should not be an issue and she shouldn't be too large to deliver naturally!
Good Luck and remeber to go with YOUR gut feelings :)

I was induced at 38.5 weeks due to pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes. Tests showed my daughter was measuring about 8.5/9lbs. Right before they made the cut for my emergency c-section they were betting she was closer to 9lbs, from not only my size, but also the last of the tests they had run. When she was finally delivered, she was only 6 lbs 10 oz. Just my experience to say don't always be so quick to think the tests are completely 100% accurate all the time. Good luck.
P.S. I hate you all, I gained 71 lbs and still have the last 10 lbs to take off. LOL :P

Hi R.!
I don't think you have anything to worry about! Have you had an ultrasound to check on baby?

For my first pregnancy, I only gaine 21 pounds the entire nine months! My daughter was born at 39 weeks, and it was an induced labor, and she ended up being a C-Section, and she came out 8lbs 1 ounce. I too thought it was strange to not gain alot of weight during the pregnancy and still have a big baby, but doctor said that I was just lucky!!!

For my second pregnancy, I gained about 25 pounds, and also had my son via C-section. He was born at 37 weeks, and he was a big boy, weighing 8lbs! I guess if we would have waited until week 40 he would have been really big!!

Have you had any troubles during your pregnancy? Why does you dr. want to induce? I was induced because I had high blood pressure! In my own personal opinion, if you do not NEED to be induced, I would try to wait it out. Why have an amnio if you don't need one? If this is your first pregnancy and you don't have any other kids at home, talk it over with your doc and see if he would let you go longer if you promised to stay home and on bedrest. Just my opinion! I'm a big chicken with medical proceudres! But as far as your baby's size, I wouldn't worry! Both my kids were big! Some of us just grow em big I suppose!

Let me know how you make out!

With my second child I had a 9 lb 7 oz baby at 38 weeks...Not by c-section. I gained 33 pounds during my pregnancy and was fairly thin to begin with. My first was 8 lb 2 oz and I gained 45 lbs ugh! I have a few friends that they estimated their babies big and then they were induced only to find that the baby was only around 6 pounds which is fairly small. The longer the baby is in the womb the better, a big healthy baby is great and there are less medical issues to deal with. Personally I would ride it out and wait until your due date if you can. They are Dr.s and sometimes they are not always right, you know your body and baby best!

Good Luck!!!

Don't worry yourself with anything! I am sure your baby is just fine. Doctors just give an estimate of the size - my son was 7 pounds 12 ounces - and they considered him just average size. Why would your doctor want to do an amnio . . . do you mean a sonogram?
I am sure your baby is very healthy - which is what you have been praying for all these months - RELAX and ENJOY!
God Bless you and your FAMILY!

hi
My doctor was "concerned" about a big baby as well. He also suggested an amnio but i denied it because there was really no reason for it (in my opinion). I did get induced 1 week early and I had a healthy 9 lbs 4 oz girl. He wanted me to have a c-section becasue she was big...(or so he said- i think it was more convience) but dont forget many women before us had big babies naturally. I am not the "earthy" type so I am all for medical interventions but I feel some Drs. get carried away and want to cover themselves from any lawsuits. My best advice would be to follow your heart!

With my 1st my Dr said OH MY WHAT A BIG BABY. Then they started talking c-section. I told them no. So they said lets do a sonogram. The tech told the dr. the baby might be 6lbs. When he was born the next day he was 8lbs 9oz. A S/G can be + /- 2lbs. The 1st thing the Dr. said was if I would have known this I would have given you a c-section.

How did they find out her weight? I do not think you should do the Amnio and just trust your body. A lot of Dr's now a days say things to kinda scare the mother to get things done on the Dr's schedule.

Kinda think of it like this.. The baby is an apple on an apple tree and they fall off when they are ready. A lot of inductions end up in c-section because of this.

Best of luck.

Don't worry! The Dr.'s do NOT know exactly how big the baby is!!!

I went in a month ahead for an ultrasound checkup, and the nurse went ballistic (3rd child of mine) thinking I was due any day, and when she found out I had a month and a half to go, was putting me on all kinds of tests, etc. for 2 hours....she turned the screen from me, I heard the baby had to be terribly cramped, etc. etc....so they did stress tests, etc.to which they finally sent me home.

I found out that measuring is "approx.", and "the measurments" are only approx. estimates, etc.

I delivered at normal time.....my baby girl was 6 lb. 12 oz. nice and easy size. Nothing huge like they said I would be! (They told me at least 10 lbs.!)I also only gained 20-25 lbs. with all my kids....and it was wonderful! I'm sure you're "all baby". Just eat healthy veggies and fruits, and you'll be Great!...and so will your little one! Amnio's are very dangerous, as they are invading. (Sticking a needle into the amnio-sac can introduce germs, etc....) Not needed. Also, if a baby is born prematurely, when their lungs are exposed to air, they develope 2-3 times faster. But if there isn't a need, then it's best for them to finish on their own! ~ My sister has had 8 healthy babies, and one was a month and a half preemie. (Big 25 year old now....very handsome and full of muscles!) She learned she's the responsible one, and the Dr.'s work for you. Do your research on the web, ask experienced parents, go with your gut, you're the mom, and if something doesn't seem quite right, examine/research it for yourself , and do what you think is best.
Remember, the Dr.'s are working for you, you are paying them. You are ultimately the one responsible for your health, as well as your baby's health. If you feel great, the baby is moving well...I'm sure you are both healthy, and there isn't anything to be alarmed of! Enjoy your time together before she's here!...life will be forever changed. Wonderful in a different way. :)

She's normal size right now. Some might even say she's tiny. Why the amnio? If everything is ok, why do it now and why induce? Both my husband and I weighed about 7.5 lbs when we were born. my daughter was just under 6lbs. But when i arrived at the hospital when i was in labor, they did an ultrasound and measured and all that good stuff and they told me that she would be weighing approx 7.5 lbs. I I don't think those things are too accurate. i freaked a little because i'm very petite and i only gained 26lbs during the pregnancy. Every baby is different, every pregnancy is different. Don't worry about her weight or how much you've gained, as long as both of you are healthy. Let nature run it's course.

First of all, I want to say congratulations! There is truly nothing better than being a mom. And no experience comes close to giving birth to your first child. Having said that, I do hope that you can find some peace and can let go of the major concerns that you have. This is such a beautiful time - to be enjoyed and savored.

Now, on to my experience - with my baby #2 (my now almost 4 year old daughter) they were very concerned that she was WAY to big at around 32 weeks. They monitored me closely. Sent me to a nutritionist, had me doing insulin checks (finger pokes) six times a day. They were fairly certain that when she was born she was going to be at least 12 pounds! Oh, yes, and I only gained 12 pounds total!! So, on delivery night, when the OB said, "Wow! What a petite little thing!" I acutally said, "No, you must have the wrong one. They said she would be HUGE!" LOL They were all mistaken. She was a little 6 pound, 13 ounce princess. With one heck of a set of lungs. And an even bigger personality.

We do need doctors and their expertise to get us through. However, they are human, and as such do make mistakes!

You and your baby and your family will be in my prayers. And I'm believing that no matter her weight or length, she will be perfectly, beautifully healthy!

Love and Blessings,
J.

They tried to tell me my daughter was going to be over 8 lbs. and she was only 6 lbs. 11 oz. when she was born (1 day late!). So, it is only an estimate when they tell you what the baby is going to be. They could be wrong, or they could be right. If the doctor wants to induce you at 37 weeks, ask why and if you are satisfied with the answer and feel you can handle the induction, then go for it. If not, you are not obligated to say yes. They only thing that would make me say yes is if they thought the baby was in danger.

Also, you did not do anything wrong and if the doctor tried to make you feel like you did, I would really reconsider your OB! You are doing great!

Having your first child is so exciting but also a little nerve racking because so much is unknown or experienced for you. Don't be concerned about the size of your baby unless your doctor is. If every child went by exact measurements, we would all be cut-outs. After the first week, baby's growth charts are all over the place. Sounds like yours is getting a head start! She sounds very healthy. Congraulations!

My son was a few days late and was measuring 9 lbs. 11 oz. The doctor said that the sonogram was accurate to 10%, so plus or minus a pound. He ended up being 8 lbs. 11 oz. We had an appointment to talk about induction, but my water broke the night before. I ended up having a c-section because the labor wasn't progressing the way they wanted and my doctor didn't feel he would fit if I delivered naturally. We has planned for a water birth with hypnotherapy, so I"m all for natural.

All that being said, I would think 6 lb. 11 oz. at 35 weeks isn't that huge. I've heard of women delivering 10 lb. babies naturally without so much as a tear.

You have done NOTHING wrong - babies are what they are. If you don't feel comfortable being induced, don't. It's your body and your baby. You don't want to do anything to put the baby at risk, but just about everyone I know that was induced early had a c-section. The baby just wasn't ready to come out.

Personally, I'd wait to see where you are 37 weeks. Ask for a second opinion if you're not comfortable with the sono results.

Good luck :-)

Hi R.,

I wouldn't worry about something being wrong with your baby, if you have been healthy throughout your pregnancy,
and there is no evidence of anything being abnormal than
I would not stress it. Personally my first daughter was 7lbs and 9 oz and all I gained in the 9 month period was 30 pounds and I was tiny. Now if your doctor has other medical reasons to be concerned than you might want to consider the inducing of your labor, as long as your not puttting your child in any danger. This is a tough decision overall you must examine all reasons why your doctor feels its a bad thing that your baby is big, there is nothing wrong with having a big baby as long as she's healthy. Good luck and I will pray that your baby will be well and healthy.

Hi R., congrats on your first baby. My name is E. and I have two beautiful kids. My daughter is 6 now and she weighed 8lbs 12oz at birth and she was 1 week early. My son who will be 3 next month was born 2 weeks early and he was 9lbs 4oz. They were and still are very healthy kids. I did not gain more than 30-35lbs with each pregancy and did not have gestational diabetes. I just had big babies. I hope that this helps you make a decision, but I would not induce, she will come when she is ready and she will be a beautiful healthy baby.

I don't think you've done anything particularlly "wrong"
My hubby and I were'nt Large babies, we were average size, and my daughter was 8lbs 10oz, but she also decided to be 2 weeks late!! But I DID NOT want to be induced!!! So I waited....and she was huge!! Which I LOVE.....Now... but not when she was coming out! (lol) Long story short...I was induced anyway....;(
I only gained 25lbs my entire pregnancy and I ate healthy, I was really good about what I ate, I di eat junk too but not as much as now!!
So I think your pregnancy sounds like its going normal & fine!! I wouldn't be induced... but thats me?! She probably wont grow too much more in the next 2 weeks and if she does she certainly wont be heavier than my girl was...I had her naturally! I'd wait....
Good Luck!! & Best wishes!!

I know alot of people whose dr's told them their baby is measuring 9 lbs, 8.5 lbs, etc. But when the baby was born it only weighed 6.5 lbs or 7 lbs. You get the idea. They are always off so I wouldn't worry about it. You didn't do anything wrong. As long as the baby is healthy, don't stress.

WhenI was carrying my first child they kept asking me if my due date was correct. It was, they kept saying he was measuring out to be too big. I waited all the way til my actual due date and still nothing was happening. I even had an ultra sound the day before and they said he would be big. (Alomost 10-11pds) Needless to say, i opted for a c-section. After he was born he weighted 8lbs 5 oz. and 20" long. Many women have delivered this size baby. I probably could have also. MY point is if you feel comfortable, wait it out.... I found out that ultra sounds are about 10% off in their measurements. Also, usually doctors dont like to induce for first babys. Follow your instinct and heart and ask alot more question to your doctor and other moms.
Hope this helps you.

R.,

You haven't done anything wrong. You are eating well and the baby is just taking in all the nutrition that she needs and is growing in the just the right ways. Take this as a good sign. First babies are usually late. I have 3 boys, my first was 3 days late at 7lbs 12 1/2ozs, my second was 2 days late at 8lbs 8ozs and my third was induced at 36 weeks and was 7lbs 13ozs.

Good luck and don't worry, you have done nothing wrong. Sounds to me like you have done everything just right.

How did your dr measure you? Is it by hand with a tape measure or was it by u/s? I think that matters too - sometimes their "measurements" can be way off - even my dr told me that himself, as I am having the opposite problem, Im 37 weeks now and measuring about 34! And I have gained a ton of weight!

Otherwise, I would say everything sounds fine. If your dr was worried about the size, Im sure he would tell you. I would try not to be induced if you really dont have to be, I've not heard the greatest stories about induction - but I dont have experience so I cant say for sure, but I would do a lot of research on it b/f I let my dr do it - All just IMO! Lots of Luck to you mama!!

Wow, thee same thing happened to me except they didn't catch my son's wait until it was too late to deliver naturally. They predicted 11 lbs, he came out 10. I too only gained 20 lbs throughout my pregnancy and did not have GD. My doctor said babies are getting bigger these days. She seems to think it's the hormones the use in our chicken and beef. I don't know how true that is but I was reassured by hospital staff, doctors, family and friends I didn't do anything to cause it. So relax and be happy they caught it in time for you to have a natural birth. My son is now 7 months old (and 19 lbs) and VERY healthy and happy. You and your little girl are going to do great! Congrats on becoming a new Mommy!
