Searching for a Pediatrician - Tulsa,OK

In the Tulsa area, can anyone recommend a Pediatrician that actually listens to the parents?

We've tried the Young People's Clinic - Dr. Mills. The Dr's here did not listen to us and ONLY wanted to perform their OMT on our son regardless of the reason for the visit and they charged our insurance for OMT when it was refused in the office. Then they "forgot" to file our insurance and turned us over to collections and we had to fight them for 3 months to file the dang paperwork with the insurance to get their payments. Grrrrrrr.

We tried Dr. Susan O'Brian. She only wanted to blame us for our son's sleeping issues. And she hasn't got the best temperment or manners, I'll say...she got very agitated and annoyed when we asked questions. They have insurance filing issues, too. They took our payment at the time of the visit. Sent us a bill stating we did not pay them. We called the bank and verified the payment was made and their office demanded we provide a copy of the check to them as proof - EVEN AFTER WE TOLD THEM THE PAYMENT WAS MADE WITH A DEBIT CARD. Complete morons. Double Grrrrrrrr.

We now see Dr. Patrick Hughes. Was a great Dr, we thought...he answers questions and explains things. He provides data for commonly discussed things like immunizations. He spent time with our son and appears to be attentive and generally concerned... That is, until our normally healthy son got sick. We've taken him to see the Dr 3 times now in the past 6 weeks-ish (at 25$ a pop) and still have not received any antibiotics or medicine for his congested cough, stuffy/runny nose and even when he had a fever for 2 days. He will not prescribe anything to help our son and the poor little guy has coughed until he throws up because he is gagging on phlem. We have resorted to treating him with over-the-counter medicines - but he is only 2 years old and our selections are limited. Even I have it now this nastiness now and I'm on antibiotics.

Now, Dr. Hughes tells us that our son hasn't had his 6-month shots. This is bunk. Now we have to go back to Dr. O'Brien and see if they've lost his records because we have been UBER-diligent with immunizations. I know for a fact he had them - but I can't prove it without getting the Dr's records or records from the Health Department - that is, if Dr. O'Brien reported them.

This is getting a bit retarded to say the least. We don't have the time of day for nasty Dr's. We don't have the time to chase ficticious papertrails for payments and shot records that were made and we definitely don't have countless hours and money to repeat fruitless office visits.

I know someone out there has an awesome Pediatrician for their lil ones....

What can I do next?

Dr. Zomer is awesome! Both my girls have seen him since birth and they both love him, and he was actually pediatrician to both my husband and I when he was just starting out (before we even knew each other :-))and both my mom and his mom loved him back then. He's at South Pointe Pediatrics at 93rd and Mingo and phone number is ###-###-####. He loves kids and it shows, and his PA Stephanie is wonderful, too.

We are really happy with Dr. Alka Sood and her office, Birth & Beyond Peds. They are located at 101st and Yale. She is always very genuine and caring. My son likes her and her staff is great. We really like Nurse Scott when it is time for immunizations. We just reciently saw Dr. Jodi Mclain, in Dr. Soods office, for upset stomach. She is great as well. I felt she really listened to what I had to say when explaining my sons symptoms. And she really took the time to answer all my questions and gave me helpful info. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more info.

Have you seen anyone at Pediatric & Adolescent Care in the St. John's Williams Tower? We take our children there and love all of the doctors. Our physician (Dr. Zetik) isn't taking any more new patients from what I heard (could be wrong), but there are several other excellent physicians in the group. They have taken great care of us.

I am so sorry to hear you are having so many issues with pediatricians. I take my 2 year old (25 months) to Dr. Dawn Mayberry at South Tulsa Pediatrics, which is just west of the intersection of 91st and Memorial. The entire office is so great and I just love them. Their doctors and nurses are wonderful, the hours are great, they get my daughter in whenever there is an issue with her health, they are very patient and spend a lot of time explaining things and offering patience, understanding, and solutions. It seems like nowadays doctors will not prescribe any medications for virus related illnesses for kids under 2, which can be frustrating when we know our kids are suffering. But, STP are great at offering suggestions for other remedies to alleviate colds, etc. They are also very willing to give you a copy of all shot records at the time of each visit. I always ask for a new copy each time my daughter has a shot, but I have to keep her daycare provider up to date on all of this. I have never had a problem with record filings, billing, insurance filing, etc. They also have a great website that includes a "pediatric advisor". It is great for random questions parents have from what to expect with behavioral issues to potty training to cold remedies. Their website is www.southtulsapediatrics.com. Check them out and good luck!

Dr. Connie Proskovec with Utica Park Clinic. I was turned on to her by a lady at work and my daughters and I love her. She is very down to earth and is happy to take a few minutes to answer questions, from either parents or kids. I was very impressed that when my 9 year old daughter asked questions Dr. Connie (as she is called) not only answered the questions seriously, but answered them directly to my daughter. Her nurse is wonderful as well. She got my 12 year old daughter to take a shot. That may not seem like a big deal, but I have spent years dealing with her fear of pain for every shot, dental appointment, etc. and have actually had to leave without needed work done. She was so quick about it my daughter laughingly decided it wasn't even worth the time of working up tears (lol). I very highly recommend Dr. Connie to anyone who will listen.

Like Ali B, we also use Dr. Alka Sood at Birth and Beyond and we couldn't be happier! We have seen Jodi McClain also and love Nurse Scott. They always give handouts with great info and Dr. Alka never seems to rush us out. The nurseline is also great when you just have a quick question. We have had to call after hours and the doctors are always very helpful. I highly recommend!

I have used Dr. Richard Gordon since my son was born 4 years ago. Very friendly and good with my son. He is very reassuring about any issues you might ask about....never had a problem with insurance. Good luck!

Hi L.,
First off, I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this! Second, I love my daughter's pediatrician. Her name is Dr. Janet Jones, and she is at Birth and Beyond Pediatrics at 101st and Yale. Now, I can't say how she would be concerning some of those issues you've had because we haven't had them. But we really like her and she is not afraid to listen. When our daughter had a persistent cough, she tried different meds and ideas until she was somewhat sure that we had nailed down the problem. I don't know that she would prescribe antibiotics for your son's illness, because of course antibiotics are not always the answer. If it's viral, they won't help at all. So I can't make promises, but we have been extremely satisfied with her.
Good luck!!!!
