Reflux - McDonough, GA

Unfortunatly I have no great cure either. My son had terrible reflux and we tried all the things you are doing and also meds. A note on the meds, we tried 2 different things and neither worked. The medications neutralize the acid coming up, not stop the reflux. So sometimes it is the strong acid making the child spit up, and the meds solve that. Other times, mostly when the child does not experience discomfort, it is an imature digestive system causing the spit-up and neutralizing the acid has no effect. Therefore the meds do not work, they did not work on my son.
You will want to watch for ear infections now and as she gets older. Both my pediatrician and GI said an immature system that has a tendency toward reflux, can have a tendency toward ear infections.
My son spit up til he was almost 15 months old. But, he was under a GI's care and although a bother, when it stopped , it stopped. He has not had any digestive trouble since. He began ear infections at 9 months and eventually had to have tubes. But they solved so many sickness problems as well as ear infections, he has been very healthy since.

Both my children had reflux. I used the Playtex VentAire bottles and put mylicon drops IN the bottles at each feeding. My daughter didn't appear to have any discomfort from the reflux, but she sure was a champion projectile spitter-upper! So, we just dealt with the spit-up the best we could. She wore a bib constantly and I was never far from a burp cloth or towel. I also had to carry extra clothes with me everywhere. We also invested in a good steam cleaner for the carpet. My son came home from NICU with severe reflux and medication. He was in pain from the reflux and the meds didn't really seem to help. We even had to put Simply Thick in his breast milk and cereal in his formula. I also put Mylicon drops in each bottle and he pretty much stayed upright all the time. As long as your daughter is not uncomfortable, just get a good stain remover(Totally Toddler from Toys R Us is GREAT!) and learn to ignore the curdled milk smell. Eventually they outgrow it. My daughter went through the same thing, and I hate to be negative but it is just a matter of choosing whether you just want to deal with it or medicate. I dealt with it for a while because, as with your daughter, she wasn't in pain and was gaining weight. Eventually I did choose to medicate because I got tired of her spitting up all over everything. I wish I could give you a magic remedy, but there isn't one. It does get better though. My daughter stopped spitting up at about 6 months.

I think you are doing the best you can I too had a child that spit up after every feeding. I did thicken the formula with cereal as well and sat him up an 1-2 after feedings he was on a special formula not the milk one and for the life of me I can't remember which one but it seemed like it made no difference with the spitting up, he couldn't take the regular formula it really did not agree with him. I wish I had some special method that would help but I did do what you did and I didn't put him in his swing for a few hrs after a bottle when he was older either. I gave him the over the counter gas drops even after the formula change that helped a little. Honestly my son got better once he was eating from the table about 9 months old. Sorry I couldn't help I wanted to let you know I too have been there and weathered it out. Best of luck to you and it will get better.

Unfortunately I don't know of any remedies to cure spitting up. I mean my daughter spit up ALL of the time--lots of spit up--and she was never diagnosed with reflux. So if she's not in any pain then it sounds like you might just have to wait for her to grow out of it. My daughter grew out of it around 6 months. Sorry! I just always kept an extra outfit for her and an extra shirt for me in the car. Nothing is worse than walking around with a big spit up streak down your shirt and smelling like spit up all day long.
