Red Raw Patch on Baby's Tongue

I just found this red raw looking patch on the far back of my 1 yr. olds tongue. It kind of looks like a burn. Doesn't look like thrush, he had that about 7 months ago and I remember what it looked like on the inside of his cheeks and he didn't have any on his tongue. So this doesn't look like that, although I have no idea if it is or not. He did get shots at his check up on Wed. Anyone know what this is? I'm calling the Dr. tomorrow morning as it doesn't seem to be bothering him, I think it can wait for a few hours.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, we went to the Dr.s and of course what always happens to my family, they have no idea. They didn't mention foot and mouth but did say it could be geographical tongue but they weren't sure. They expect it to go away. Another medical oddity for my family, you'd have to know us to laugh at that I guess LOL. They said as long as it doesn't seem to bother with his eating, get any bigger or no fever then there isn't anything to worry about.

And also to the woman who asked if he was bottled fed-no, boobie and sippy cup. I kind of thought I would check all of the sippy cups to see if one had a rough edge or something but nothing. So if I find anything else out I will let ya know.

Could also be a geographic tongue which is harmless. Do a google image search and see if it looks like that. Hand foot and mouth ulcers are usually painful and kids typically have blisters on their palms and soles.

My daughter (now 10) has geographical tongue. Hers started out as perfect round circles on her tongue. The docs said its not a big deal. Now that she's older, she says it bugs her only when she eats things like tomatoes and pineapples. It does not happen very often now that we watch what she eats. As she has gotten older we also noticed the the "perfect" circles now show up in some pretty strange patterns! Good Luck and I hope that's all your dealing with!

I agree with the other posts - hand foot and mouth is apparently pretty common. A friend of mine just had a bout of it with her son. It is also very possible it could be nothing. I suggest calling the Dr. just to be on the safe side but if he is not in pain then you are probably OK to wait until you can see him.

Could be hand, foot and mouth virus. My 2 year old just had it. Definately take him to the doctor and good luck:)

It may be mouth ulcers. This is a viral thing that really means nothing but will occassionally result in ulcers in the mouth. This includes the gums/inside of cheeks/tongue, etc. These can be extremely painful too. They usually take a week to clear up on their own. There are some products on the market that help (Kanka, and a few others). Also what helps is lots of fluid, once the mouth dries a bit, they tend to hurt more. They can also interfere with eating depending on where they are in the mouth since it can hurt dramatically when you eat. The only thing that seems to help speed the healing process for me is taking Lysine, it's an amino acid the body makes naturally, but tends to be in lower amounts in those with this virus. But since your boy is so young, I'd talk to the pediatrician to verify it's this and what you can do at that age.

Good luck
Julie

I am curious too. This morning I woke up with one on the tip of my tongue.

Is he bottle fed? could the formula/milk have been over heated at some point? That is all I can think of, but I breastfed...only used bottles when I worked at a daycare. I also wondered about geographic tongue. I am 30 and have had it for as long as i remember. If he has had anything acidic (tomato, pineapple, strawberry, orange, lemon, etc) it could be that. Maybe call the nurse at your dr.s and see if they think he needs to be seen! Good luck!
