Hi Ladies,
My hair is finally coming back after the chemo. I need recommendations for straightening irons. I want something that does not straighten too much to make the hair look too little. If someone can please suggest a brand that is of good quality, takes away the waves but does not take away the 'fullness' from the hair. Also, please if you have any recommendations on a heat shield serum. I don't want to buy a brand of iron or serum that would spoil the hair in the long run. How often do you use the straightening iron? I mean how much is too much? Should I be doing only x times a week, no more? Please help me with this. Thanks a ton!

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
I have the CHI Turbo flattening iron and use it 3-5 times a week. It does dry out the ends to use it that often. My hair dresser recently recommended ThermaFuse products. The ThermaFuse Straight is applied prior to blow drying. I really like this product. They also have an Intense Repair that is a weekly deep conditioner that can help with the dryness. Hope this helps. I wish you well.

Hi A., Im a salon manager for Ulta in Natomas and on Sunday March 1st we are having a chi flat iron workshop. It is a complimentary session with a stylist on how to flat iron and some techniques on straightening, flipping and curling with a flat iron.If you are interested call an Ulta near you and set up an appt.they will be about 15 min sessions. But you can see how to use and what products they can recommend to go along with thermal protection.

Dear A.,
Congratulations on your hair coming back!
My sister in law lost all her hair during chemo and boy, was she surprised when it came back in curly. She had always had very long, stick straight hair. She actually liked having curly hair. It's really long again so it's not quite curly as much as it's wavy.
I would recommend that you find a good beautician in your area that has experience helping women through the different stages of their hair re-growth. They can advise you which products might be best. Heaven knows you don't want to damage your hair as it's growing back in. They can straighten your hair for you and show you how to go about it, etc. That way, you can see how it looks straight and decide if it might be something you only want to do now and then for a different look.
Treat yourself to an appointment at a good salon and then go from there. That's my advice, anyway.
Take care and very best of wishes!

Congrats on the curls ;)

I have a CHI ceramic straightening iron (got it on overstock much reduced). My hair is thick and wavy and nothing else made a dent, so to speak. I think it is worth spending the money on an excellent one, because with a poor quality flatiron you'll end up going over and over your hair and that'll cause more damage. Getting some good clips to help section your hair is really helpful, too. I know people say how lucky you are to have curly hair, but it isn't always what you want! I have used kerastase hair serum, but is very $$ and won't be able to get it again, due to economizing!

I barely have time to do anything to my hair anymore, but I used to flat iron 2-3 times per week. I wouldn't do it every day.

Hope that helps, seems like others recommended the CHI, too...

E.

Hi A. V.,
I am glad to read that your hair is coming back. There are many decent flat irons available for you, but the trick is making the iron work to straighten and leave some volume in the hair while straightening. As for a thermal protectant- I almost always prefer CHI Silk infusion. A little goes a long way. The CHI flat iron is one of the best, but there are others which could provide you with what you want. Being that your hair might be a little fragile, I would suggest using a flat iron no more than every other day; but only when necessary. And once the hair is straightened, you learn the tricks on maintaining it until the next washing. My suggestion to you is make an appointment with your hairdresser, or a reputable salon or school (ask for someone who specializes in textured hair) and have your hair washed, blow-dried, styled, and possibly flat ironed. Make sure you are specific in what you want. A good stylist will show you the tricks on how to style it the way you want. One of the best places to talk with someone about flat irons is ULTA. They have a few stores in the bay area. You can also go online and do some research on flat irons. There are many brands; and it depends on one's budget. How much are you willing to spend?
This can get tricky, but all questions can be answered.
I wish you luck in your endeavor. Take care!

A.,

There is nothing lovelier than wavy or curly hair. As someone who has wished for it all her life I can assure you of that! I hope you will take this opportunity to learn to enjoy the lovely vibrancy of the hair you have. Maybe it could be a symbol of your body's return from battle? I hope you're doing well and taking good care of yourself. All the best. -K.

Hi.
Congratulations on getting some hair! Have you tried a straightening gel? My hair is naturally thin and the straightening gel gives it fullness and manageability. You put the gel in before you dry it and it may be more gentle than the flat iron which I could never master.
Good luck!

I would strongly reccomend a cream, not an iron. Your hair is weak and needs to build it's strength. A de frizz cream will soften the waves without the damaging heat.

I use a straightening iron about 5 or 10 times a month. My hair is great with no ill effects. I just got the least expensive one at Wallmart. make sure it has ceramic heat pads though.

Good for you! Just don't skimp. Buy a good straightener (ceramic) and good products too. And know that your hair is full because it's got wave, so keep that in mind when you are going for that look.

congrats on getting your hair back. that is great and must make you feel great too. :) i think one of the best straightners out there is a cermaic one called HAI. doesn't damage hair. there are tons of products out there, just don't buy cheap ones. the ones i have tried and liked are by AVEDA and REDKEN. both work great. as for how often to use a straightner i think will depend on your hair (dry or oily). some people wash a straighten everyday, others can go 2-3 days after straighting there hair without washing it and just doing touch ups in the a.m. with the straightner.

good luck!
