Flat Iron Recommendations!

Hi! I am in search of a flat iron, I hear that the Chi is the BEST but have also heard it's downfalls of having one, such as it breaking very easily. I do not plan to use it everyday but a once in a while thing, I have really thick & course hair and it initially takes an hour to do my hair. What is the next best thing? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow! What a hot topic this post was!! I have been interested in the Chi for years now but couldn't spend the money, if I can spend on other things that cost as much, this is a once in a while purchase, I'm a penny pincher to the extreme:) My hubby loves that about me! The overwhelming response has changed my mind on just purchasing any flat iron. I will look into getting a chi, they seem to be selling everywhere these days. Thanks ladies for your time. Have a blessed day!

The sales girl at the hair product store ( I can't think of the name of it) said the Paul Mitchell brand was even better than the Chi. It is more expensive but you could probably find a good deal online. I possibly made a mistake and let the guy at the kiosk in the mall talke me into the ISO brand. He made me think I was getting a good deal and told me it had a life time warranty and I bought it for about $60. Now I have read bad things about that brand online and found out you have to pay $30 to get a new one if it breaks. You can get a new ISO on the internet for $30. I should have known I was getting scammed.

The CHI are the best no doubt about that! They can be expensive but worth every dime. I have had mine for about 7-8 years and have never had a problem with it. I have very thick hair and it works great for it since it gets hot enough to straighten it thru.

Hello,

I had the Chi for years and thought it was the best flat iron until I tried the Paul Mitchell Smoothing Iron. OMG! I couldnt believe that I had been using that stupid Chi for so long and hadnt tried this sooner. I have thick black course frizzy hair that is a mess if i dont flat iron it. Well I am so happy with this flat iron and I always recommend it to all of my friends. Dont buy the Chi! I mean it did a good job but nothing compared to the Paul Mitchell.

I really researched the flat irons before buying one for my daughter for Christmas. I looked at all the customer reviews and I ended up getting mine online from www.folica.com I bought the Solia 1 1/4 in. because the reviews said that it works just as good as the Chi but it doesn't break as easily. It retails for $150 but I got it for $83. You can get a much better deal on this website. I share it with my daughter and it works great. We love it. Check it out.

I absolutely LOVE my Chi! I've had it for 3 years and have never had any issues with it. My hair is very coarse and has very tight ringlet curls, so it's definitely a task to straighten my hair; but the Chi is the only one that I've found that really works for my hair.

I have a CHI.
I have had it for 2 years and I love it.
My daughter has one too. She uses hers everyday and loves it!
ULTA sells them and every few months they have a coupon ( in their Sunday ad in the paper) that is 20% of everything. That will save you about $20.
The chi's sell fast when that coupon comes out so go early,if you decide to get one.

I've had my Chi for well over 7 years...it works great. The on/off switch is starting to get wore, but 7 years of use I'd expect that...it still works great though. You really can't go wrong with a Chi.

Hi,

I have very thick curly hair. I have a chi and while it does work very well it still takes a long time. I have dropped mine on the floor and it has not broken yet. I am looking into that japanese hair straightening. I know it is very expensive, but I love my hair straight. Anyway, buy the Chi. It is worth the money.

My cousin talked me into a CHI and I LOVE it! It will be hard for me to ever use a different one now. She has had hers for almost 2 years and it has not broken in any way. I have only had mine a few months, but other than it not working I don't see what I could do to break it. It seems to be very well made and it had better be for their cost, ha!

I've had my Chi for years now. I have very curly hair and spent an enormous amount of time controlling the curl. Me and a friend were discussing it over a Super Bowl party. We referred to it as being better than therapy. I'm glad to know there are other brands out there that might be good too. Thanks for your post. I refer to mine as a super industrial strength flat iron. I had been through sooooo many before I found the Chi. I haven't found a reason to change.

Paul Mitchell makes a GREAT one...that is what I have and I have crazy curly hair and it tames it. It is a little more expensive than Chi ($140 maybe) but worth the expense. I have heard the same thing about Chi. It also has a 1 year warranty. I got mine at Visible Changes Hair Salon. I am sure you can find them online though.

Chi's and floors don't get along well at all (AKA they really don't like being dropped on one). But they are great. My daughter has straightened her hair for YEARS and we have tried MANY differnt brands, styles, sizes. I avoided the Chi like the plague for years because I just couldn't beleive that a hair styling tool would be worth $100. When she finally convinced me to get her one, I was astounded at how well (quick and good) it worked.

She is on her second one because a friend dropped hers and it did break, but it lasted 4 years before that happened. They also have a warranty that I think is 2 years, but I have heard others say lifetime. . . just send it to Chi and they will replace it. . . of course I didn't know that at the time and her friend paniced and tossed it in the trash.

Anyway, it is worth the investment, just keep the warranty info. . .

Chi. I now use the wide width, not the narrow version.

The narrow version did crack because it fell off the counter and/or out of the cabinet onto the tile floor one too many times. So with the next one (which was the wider version, which also helped me do my whole head faster), I am more careful about not knocking it the counter.

You need to try the instyler. It is awesome. it is a flat iron, strightner, and curling iron all in one. You can do so many things with it. My daughter has really thick hair, and when I use it on her...her hair looks and feels really shiny and sooo much lighter. And it is so fast and easy to use. Takes just a few minutes to get some great styles. You can go to www.getinstyler.com and check it out. They offer a free trial...and it was a buy one get one free deal. But you can try it in your home for 30 days for just $14.95. It has a superlong cord. I think it is 8 ft. It is great for any type of hair...thick, coarse, thin, med, fine. It works great for all. Hope this helps!!!

Hi,

I feel like I'm the only one that doesn't use a Chi!! :-) My hair is thick, coarse, and wavy/curly, frizzy. Another words, bad hair day everyday. ha ha ha I have a Conair Infiniti. It's an ionic steam straightener. Bought it on line. This past summer I was watching tv and one of those infomercials came on. I figured, what the heck, I'll try it for 30 days and if I don't like it i'll send it back. Well, I still have it. I tried it out on one of the most humid hot yucky days of the summer. My hair laid flat for 2 days. I totally love it!

The Chi works great with all hair types. My hair is fine like a baby and my daughter's hair is thick and course and it works great for both of us. I bought my first one from a Big H.E.B. for $99.99. I had it for about 3 years and I never had a problem with it. After it was stolen from my home during a New Year party, my hubby started searching online to see if he could replace it cheaper. He wound up finding an eBay store in Houston that sells them. If you pick it up from them it's a lot cheaper. If I remember correctly it was around $70.00. He said he searched for Chi's on eBay, found a seller that had a ton of listings and contacted them to find out where their store was.

BTW...I too bought many flat irons in search of "the one" and the Chi was the best one I have found!! Happy hunting.

The expensive ones not only flatten better than teh cheap ones, they literally condense your hair. I researched quite a bit and bought the Sedu. I use it every single day and my hair is not fried at all. It got the best reviews when I looked into it for not damaging hair. I love it!

I have thick wavy course hair. I got a Chi for christmas and a few months later it broke. Chi have a life time warranty on them so you can send it back if it breaks. I never got around to sending it in. I use a wide flat iron that cost about 20 bucks and I love it. Its wider so it covers more area at one time. Also use a bio silk or some other serum like this to protect your hair from burning its also a great conditioner.

I have the cheaper version on the Chi iron..It's still Chi..but it's not the $100+ one. It's call the Chi Turbo. It's for thick, course hair and has red around the top(opposite the metal pieces that get warm) It's wonderful. My mom got it for me for christmas three christmases ago and it hasn't even thought about breaking...and I have two curios children!! I've dropped it several times too. haha. The more expensive Chi is too small for my hair, which is why I got the bigger (and a little uglier) one. haha. Good luck with straightening!

I just bought one by Remington that I really like. My hairdresser also suggested the Chi, but I wasn't about to spend $100 on one! I don't remember what it's called, but it has Teflon fibers on the ceramic plates which are supposed to help protect your hair from the heat. But it works really well.

I love my Chi, I don't use it everyday and I'm not super h*** o* it but it's survived with a few bruises. My only issue is that it gets SO hot it will burn your hair if you're not careful. I also have a cheapy by Revlon that is really great, it's 1/2" wide while the chi is more like
1 1/2". If you want to play without the investment, I'd get a store brand with ceramic plates, if you use it enough to invest 100+ then go for the Chi or one of the other pricier models.

I got the CHI for my birthday but I completely understand not using one everyday. I did not use one everyday until recently. It has allowed me to take a shower and let my hair air dry and then hours later get ready quickly.

For years, I used Helen of Troy Flat Iron that I got from Sally's Beauty Supply. The only complaint is that it would sometimes pull my hair but when you only use it on the weekends you will live.

I also have really thick coarse hair and it takes a lot of heat to get it straight and I don't have the patience for the flat irons that are only about 1" wide. My husband bought me a flat iron that is probably about 1 1/2-2 wide and I can put a pretty good chunk of hair in it. The brand is "hot tools" I think he bought it at Ulta for about $50. I also purchase one from my hair stylist the brand is IT&LY and it is great but it was $120.00 and is only about 1" wide and it takes forever to straighten all my hair, so I have gone back to using my cheaper one. Good luck!

To add to the CHI fan club....I love my CHI! My hair was so unmanagable- and I have had my CHI for about 4 years. It has been dropped several times- and it keeps on ticking! I tried a different one before the CHI- true ceramic pro (as seen on tv beware) and the stinkin "ceramic" started chipping off! I tried to get my money back and all of a sudden couldn't get in contact with the company. I would highly suggest sticking with the CHI- with anything else- you really do not know what you are getting.

The CHI! i have been a hairdresser for 13 years and I can tell you that I am only on my 2nd chi. I don't use it everday, but it has been used a lot! Also, i have dropped it a lot of times, it is not that easy to break it. I also have thick and course hair. It is naturally wavy/curly. If I chi it, it is straight for the day, no problems, I am telling you, that CHI is the best you can get..

I have been through about 4 chi's since they became available to consumers and not just hairstylist. I personally think they have taken short cuts and don't make them as well. I kept buying them because it was the only one I had ever heard of it still took a long time to do my hair. My stylist now suggested the Paul Mitchell which she got for me for $80 so if you have stylist ask her to pick you up one of these so far it really does work better then the Chi. My friend swears by her GHD so that my be another one to look into they sell those at sephora.

answers from Houston on

Hi there. Believe me I have wasted a lot of money trying to find a flat iron that compares to the CHI and none do. If you want a flat iron that works, it has to be a CHI. I have even spent $70.00 on So called Ceramic Irons and they still suck. You can find CHI's cheaper at ULTA or Sally's Beauty Supply, but you are still going to spend about $120.00, but it's totally worth it, I think. And I don't know about them breaking easily. My first one lasted about 4 years until the cord wore out close to the iron from constant use, but even this design flaw they have fixed so that the cord turns so you're not bending the wires all the time.

Also, if you can afford to do so, I also get the "Thermal Re-Conditioning" done. It's also known as Japanese Hair Straighting. It is a semi-permenent process for straighting your hair and it will cost atleast $200.00 up to $1,000.00 depending on the length of your hair. Mine is usually shoulder length and it costs about $600.00, but that's because it takes your hairdresser a few hours to do, but it lasts atleast a year, but here again you will still need to use the CHI in order to get the really straight, glossy look for your straightened hair, so the cheaper route is just to swallow your gasp at the price and buy the CHI.

I know this is a long response, but I hope it helps. I have been really, very satisfied with all of CHI's products and the imitations have never been close to as good as CHI.

Good luck!
