I was wondering if anyone had a good recipe for peanut butter cookies without peanut butter? My Mom recently became allergic to peanut butter and I want to make her some cookies for Mother's Day because she craves peanut butter so much. Has anyone made peanut butter cookies that actually taste good with a peanut butter substitute?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the suggestions. I made the sunbutter cookies from the Trader Joe's flier. I do not have a Trader Joe's near me so I went to Giant Eagle and found one that was peanut free. My Mom loved the cookies. She not only loved the cookies she was eating the sun butter out of the jar. She even made sunbutter crackers before bed! She loves it and can't get enough! Thanks, my Mom had a great Mother's Day!

Some people have asked for the recipe so here it is.
Here is the recipe from Trader Joe's

I baked some of the cookies most of the way and then put a Hershey Kiss in the center for the last 2 min. YUM! (The ones I put Hershey Kisses in I did not press with the fork.) I thought the cookies were good but I think you could probably use another peanut butter cookie recipe and just use the sunbutter and they might be even better. Good Luck!

Sunflower Seed Butter Cookies
•2 Cups All Purpose Flour
•1 teaspoon Baking Soda
•1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder
•1/4 teaspoon Salt
•3/4 Cup Butter, room temperature
•3/4 Cup Sunflower Seed Butter, chilled
•3/4 Cup Sugar
•3/4 Cup Brown Sugar, firmly packed
•2 Eggs
•1 teaspoon Vanilla
Preheat oven to 375º.
Stir together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
In a separate bowl, beat together butter, Sunflower Seed
Butter and both sugars until fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla.
Gradually beat in flour mixture. Wrap dough in plastic and
refrigerate until well chilled, about 2-4 hours.
Roll tablespoonfuls of dough into balls with your hands.
Place about three inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
Dip a fork in flour and press onto tops of cookies, making a
criss-cross pattern on each cookie.
Bake for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown. Careful
not to burn the bottoms. Cool on baking sheets for a minute,
then transfer to wire racks to cool completely before eating.
Makes about 2-3 dozen Sunflower Seed Butter Cookies.

My 2 1/2 yr old son is allergic to all nuts. We just recently heard of Sunbutter and it's great! So many posts have recommended buying at Trader Joe's, but I have found it at my local Super Target as well.

Go for the sunflower seed butter AKA sunbutter! I love it WAAAAAY more than soynut butter (blecch, I hated the soy stuff raw and wouldn't risk it for a sub for PB-like cookies).

Our local Kroger carries Sunbutter in the Natural Foods section, and it's also available at Trader Joes.

Have NEVER heard of a peanut butter subsitute. HOw about trying them with almond butter?? She may decide it's her newest favorite thing. If not, try something close with the same TEXTURE and another flavor that she likes...like lemon or a ginger or molasses cookie.

Have her try QUERCITIN (an herbal for allergies and asthma) and see if that helps depending on how she reacts. You didn't mention if she's allergic to other things.

If she's one of those who has breathing issues, etc....I may not try it. HOWEVER, if she itches or something of that nature and loves it that much.....she has nothing to lose.

Hi. I saw that you tried the Sunbutter and liked it! We've been using Sunbutter for years and found the "creamy" is way better than the "natural". It's just like regular peanut butter as you do not have to stir it and it is sweeter. After searching high and low (since Vitamin Cottage and the like only carry the natural) I found it at Super Target of all places. You can order direct from Sunbutter too in a 5lb jar if you eat a lot of it. Just know that your cookies will turn a mossy green when you bake with it. It doesn't alter the taste, it's just oxidation. They say you can offset this with ading a little lemon juice or more baking soda to the recipe, but I found that it still happens. As long as you know to expect it, then it should be fine! Also, I would not use any other type of nut butter, even if your child is not tree nut allergic, as many nuts get mixed together in bulk so anything with tree nuts could be contaminated. Watch almonds too, as sometimes really cheap almond slices are peanuts in disguise. Lastly, ask about peanut butter in sauces as some restaurants use it as a thickener. Just a few things we've leaned with a peanut allergy kid!!!!!

Also!!! A peanut is a legume, same as bean and soy! So, if the peanut allergy is really strong, it could also be to Soy products, like soynut butter!!! That's why I think Sunbutter is the safest alternative.

Is she allergic to all nuts or just peanuts? Good substitutions are almond, cashew, and sunflower seed butters. You can get them all at Trader Joes and I think Wild Oats.

Have you tried other nut butters? If you can find a health food store or the health food section of a grocery store, you may find almond butter which is a good substitute for peanutbutter. It might have a little different flavor. I haven't personally tried this, but my husband is allergic to peanuts, too, and he LOVES peanutbutter. He usually just eats it, then takes meds later...lol.

Anyway, let us know if you find someting that works!

I have not tried it, but would sunbutter work? It is made from sunflower seeds and is available in the natural foods section of major grocery stores, like Kroger and Giant Eagle. I really like the taste of it.

I've never used this... but our kids' babysitter uses sunflower butter (looks like peanut butter) instead of peanut butter because one of the kids is allergic to peanuts. She says they love it, so it wouldn't hurt to try.

My son has a peanut allergy and since they can't have any other nuts until they are older, we use soy nut butter. If you buy the walmart brand (tastes the closest to peanut butter of all those we have tried), you can make some soy nut butter cookies. Good Luck!

Have you tried almond butter? It is a little thicker than peanut butter but you might be able to thin it for the recipe with something. The flavor is really good and you may just be able to come up with a new favorite for her. Hopefully, she isn't allergic to almonds too.

There's something called Sunbutter. It's made with sunflower seeds, and it's certified nut free. Tastes just like PB, in my opinion. You might detect a slight sunflower seed aftertaste, but it's very subtle. You can find it in Meijer in the PB section, or in Kroger in the organic/specialty food section.

My daughter is allergic to nuts, so if you would like any additional info, feel free to contact me.

Maybe - depending on her allergies you could try a different nut butter? I think soy nut butter would work well.
