I recently posted about an issue regarding school lunches for my son. Several moms recommended sunflower butter. I've never heard of sunflower butter before. What brand do you suggest? We love Jiff peanut butter, but he cannot take it to school. Thanks for the suggestions!

What can I do next?

Soy butter might be another alternative and you can find it at Walmart where the regular peanut butter is sold. I fashion myself to be somewhat of a peanut butter aficionado (and also love Jif) and it was hard to tell the difference between it and the real thing.

A friend did let me try some of her sunbutter (sunflower butter). I like sunflower seeds and so I liked it as well but it does bear more of a sunflower seed flavor rather than the peanut flavor.

Trader Joe's (Haggerty and 8 mile in Northville) has a great one. My husband likes it better then PB.

Actually I use raw, unsalted butter. Raw milk too. And you might want to try a peanut butter from Whole Foods or Better Health that would be organic.

Sunbutter. It is processed on special equipment, so there is no cross-contamination issue.

You can find it at natural food stores, Whole Foods, and some Krogers.

We use Sunbutter as well. I've also found it at Walmart and Busch's. I woud not recommend the flavor with the flax (?) seeds...it does not imitate chunky peanut butter as you might expect.

Trader Joe's Sunflower seed butter - yum! We eat it all the time - our kids call it Seed Butter and prefer it to peanut butter.

However - don't bake with it. I tried to substitute it for our favorite peanut butter chocolate chip recipe and the cookies came out of the oven emerald green. I learned that something in the sunflower seeds have a chemical reaction with baking soda, when baked. It's totally edible and harmless...but not what you want to have happen when you're trying to get out the door to a bake sale (unless it's St. Patrick's Day, of course!).

While I'm at it - Trader Joe's dark chocolate chips - mmm! Seed butter and a few chocolate chips...*lovely* afternoon pick-me up for this mom! :D
