Quick/ Healthy "On the Go" Breakfast?

I've never been much of a breakfast eater but I know it's the way to start the day. I'm getting on the health kick again but I need some good for you ideas. Also, not only for me but my kids because it seems like we get in the cereal "rut." What do you and your kids eat Mamas?

These are all great ideas. Plus, economical, easy and healthy. I am doing much better at eating something in the morning and trying to make sure my kids have a variety too. I appreciate the advice and tips...

If you have a blender pull it out and put it on the counter! I throw a banana, an apple and either an orange or avacado into it along with some ice and some nut milk (vanilla almond milk). Expereiment with different fruits. They are all delicious and totally healthy. We've been doing smoothie breakfasts for quite awhile. If you feel you need more fiber just toss in a spoon full of pulverized flax seed. For added protein I throw a raw egg in every now and then, you never know its there, some people are afraid of salmanilla but I guess we've been lucky so far :) You can also throw a tablespoon of pnut or almond butter into it for protein as well. They keep us full till lunch time.

One of my favorites is peanut butter on a piece of toast topped with sliced banana. PB & banana on a graham cracker makes a yummy afternoon snack too!

We eat oatmeal almost everyday in the winter and switch off between oatmeal and homemade yogurt in the summer. For both I just add honey and fresh or frozen blueberries (and milk for oatmeal). I get the one minute oatmeal in the canister so it doesn't take too long and I can make it fresh everyday.

I leave before my husband and kids are up, but I eat yogurt every day, and yogurt with frozen blueberries when I have them (love that!!). I also try to have a grain so sometimes take a piece of multi-grain toast in the car with me or grab a bowl of cereal. I do take a 10:30 "oatmeal break" at work when I start to get hungry again and that holds me over until lunch.

My kids end up with instant oatmeal, cereal, or frozen pancakes/waffles most mornings with daddy. If you don't want to buy those frozen you can just make some on the weekend and freeze them in zippered baggies in serving size portions. They warm up easily in the toaster or microwave.

Breakfast is one of the easiest to go type of meals...
fruit
yogurt
bagel w/cream cheese
instant oatmeal
english muffin w/peanut butter or cream cheese
crackers with peanut butter
frozen waffle, toast, spread with peanut butter or jam, and eat as a sandwich

for cereal think out of the box..
shreaded wheat - no bowl, no milk, just eat as a snack
homemade chex mix

I love the K bars and I like cold hard boiled egg whites with salt and pepper. Yogart with sliced bananas. Oatmeal ( instant ....has more sugar I think)

I have instant oatmeal every morning, no sugar added. I add a tsp of ground flax seed for omega 3 and some all bran buds for extra fiber. If I have any, I'll add a few strawberries, sliced or blueberries. If I'm bored of that, I have a whole wheat english muffin with added fiber, split and toasted and spread a tsp of honey mustard. I add 2 tomato or cucumber slices and a few slices of smoked deli turkey. YUM!

I honestly think healthy cereals are one of the best ways to go, especially since we are all trying to get out the door and don't have time for much else.

But the "healthy" part is important. I'm not talking sugared, chocolate covered or marshmallow laced cereal. I'm talking whole-grain, low sugar stuff. Cheerios, Chex, etc. Also, I love instant oatmeal, and (regular) cracked what. Cereal has fiber, carbs (important for energy), fortified with a lot of vitamins, then add the lowfat or skim milk and you get protein and calcium too. I like to cut in a banana or add a glass or OJ, but I don't always get to, so I try to take some fruit for the mid-morning. It's going to be a lower calorie meal going with a good cereal than eggs and toast or waffles, or even a bagel (especially once you add cream cheese), and being ready with a mid-morning fruit or veggie or whole grain can keep you going till lunch.

Oh, we did make sure to check the serving size (usually its 1c, though sometimes 3/4 c) and measure out to get used to eating just one serving :)

I have many ideas for quick on the go breakfasts in both Sharing Mtn. Recipes and Love More Feed Less.
Yet first I am curious what kind of cereal you are feeding, is it sugary or whole grain?
Also know that you can prepare quick breakfast sandwiches, ahead of time and freeze them for a quick morning fix, ultimately these will be healthier than those prepackaged, and you can adjust each according to personal prepference, such as 1/2 with cheese, and 1/2 without. Another, instead of those nasty, starchy, sugar filled toaster bars, why not prepare homemade biscuits, once baked and slightly cool spread some Chunky Preserves in-between the 2 halves. Chunky implies mixing some fresh chopped/sliced fruit into about 1 tablespoon of preserves (great way to get more fruit into their bodies), and then spread it on the biscuit and freeze. It takes about 45-60 seconds to thaw and warm in the microwave.
As said I have lots of recipes for Breakfast to go, in both of these cookbook. Some such as Baked Oatmeal or Museli, can be prepared in moments the night before. Oat Cakes to Go is another favorite!

I sometimes make sweet potato muffins on the weekend for a quick weekday breakfast. Other times I'll make a large batch of homemade multigrain waffles and freeze them so we can just pop them in the toaster. Sometimes egg, cheese, and veggie bacon sandwiches on whole wheat Bagel Thins or English muffins. Instant oatmeal.

Something a bit different but is one of my kids favorite breakfasts on-the-go.

Egg/Turkey Bacon Tortilla. I saw it on an episode of Oprah with Cat Cora.

Scrambled eggs
Turkey bacon
Soft Shell Tortillas

You make scrambled eggs, microwave turkey bacon and warm flour tortillas in the micro.

To assemble place eggs on 1/2 of tortilla shell, maybe 1-2 tablespoons or so, kind of keep them in the middle of the half shell. (if that makes sense), fold one piece of turkey bacon in half and place on top of eggs. Fold it like a taco and then bring each side up. Wrap a napkin around it and off you go!

Kids & Adults love them!!!

We focus on getting enough protein, fat and whole grain carbs into our diet, and that has kept everyone lean and healthy! One thing we do is a breakfast schedule -- we know we eat the same thing on Mondays, Tuesdays, etc. so we aren't short order cooks for the kids and there's no debating. It also helps shopping & cooking go faster when it's a routine.

We save fruit and milk for snack time or right after breakfast if the kids are still hungry. We don't drink juice because of the amount of sugar, lack of fiber and the effects on insulin (read "appetite") levels.

Here's our schedule:

MONDAY: scrambled eggs with whole grain toast (with organic butter)
TUESDAY: quinoa served with cinnamon & maple syrup (20 mins in the rice cooker, just do it first thing in the morning and it's ready for you by the time everyone's dressed)
WEDNESDAY: cereal (we like Kashi Heart To Heart Cereal, Honey Toasted Oat with just 5 g of sugar, and Kashi Honey Sunshine with just 6 g of sugar). I also make a homemade granola that is sweetened with only a little with maple syrup and honey (way cheaper and way healthier!). We eat it with organic whole milk, so the fat & protein help keep us satisfied.
THURSDAY: breakfast burritos with eggs, organic cheese and whole wheat tortillas
FRIDAY: cereal
SATURDAY: Fun day! Whole wheat waffles, pancakes, uncured bacon, etc. Kids choose and help to cook. I'll sometimes have a banana with sunbutter and a drizzle of honey on it as my treat. : )
SUNDAY: Plain eggs since we usually splurge and have a donut after church.

**Whatever you do, just make sure you're reading labels! If it has a ton of sugar, sodium, preservatives, aritificial colors & sweeteners, hydrogenated oil or anything you can't pronounce, the best bet is to probably steer clear of it.**

Hi5 shakes, full of high quality protein, vitamins and minerals and only 56 calories! Our whole family loves them and not just for breakfast but for a healthy snack. They come in vanilla and chocolate and they taste so good it is like having desert first!

My son *has* to eat cereal first thing in the morning, because the vitamins & minerals prevent him from getting migraines. Don't ask me why his multivitamins don't do the job, but they don't. Then around 10am I make him brunch (aka about 3 hours later), which is fairly traditional brunchy food.

Myself... I eat hot sandwiches in the morning. Breakfasty foods make me sleepy and nauseous. I just make a ham & swiss, or roast beef and chipotle, or RB & avacado & swiss, sammie the day before and in the morning turn the oven onto 300, stick the sammie in openface, and when it beeps that it's "up to temp" the sammie is perfectly toasted and melty. Oven off, sammie on a plate, elapsed time about 4 minutes. Added benefit, I leave the oven door open and it helps warm up the house.

My Favorite appliance I've ever owned is my Magic bullet (small blender, can be bought at Bed Bath and Beyond, just make sure you have a 20% off cupon) Anyways I keep the base on my counter top since it's small and keep the cups and blades in a cabinet right above. (I also keep a second mixing base at work) Then in the morning I throw some fruit (1/2 bananna, frozen berries or mango) some OJ and/or milk, and some protien powder or yogurt. and have a yummy smoothie (or if i'm in a rush I just throw everything in the cup, screw a blade on, and take it to work and mix it there). My little boy loves them too!
