Question About Son and Peeing-ready to Potty Train??

My sons were both potty trained when I adopted them but can I tell you what psychologist Kevin Leman says? It made perfect sense to me. He says to buy a little kids potty and leave it in the bathroom. The child will get curios about it, sit on it sometimes, and eventually train himself to go potty. He will feel no pressure and there's no hurry (like you said). I don't know if this speaks to your problem, but I thought I'd share it with you. Dr. Leman has helped us in other issues such as discipline and if you like to read he's terrific because he's funny.

I feel he is too young to be potty trained. I can't imagine why that is happening but when your getting ready to take the diaper off. wait. Just open it, slowly, just take the front part down slowly and if he starts to go just cover him back up until he's done.
I don't think it has anything to do with being ready to potty train.

My oldest did this for a breif time, I had the new diaper ready and open beside his behind and I opened the old, but kept him covered with the front--just in case. I slid the new under him, old diaper and all and then quickly slid the old out and taped the new on. Things will change with time.

He's definitely too young to potty train. That's not a bridge you need to worry about crossing until he's 2 1/2. I don't know why he'd be doing this. Is it every single time you reach for the diaper? I'd go with unfastening the diaper slowly like another mom said. He may have some level of control and since he might have gotten a pretty neat reaction the first time it happened (you, freaking out or jumping around or whatever) he's trying to recreate something he thought was funny, so he's going to let 'er rip when he can.
However, excessive urinating can be a sign of some medical problems. Are his diapers really, really wet when you change them? And how often do you change them? Just something to think about while you're trying to troubleshoot.

That's so interesting - I have 17 month old b/g twins, and about that same age my son started doing the same thing. I actually didn't think much about it, but I definitely noticed it when it started happening b/c he was soaking me all the time! It didn't happen with my daughter at all. Anyway, it didn't last all that long and now I can change his diaper just fine again. I didn't even think about starting to potty train then - like you I kind of plan on following their lead to avoid needless frustration. Anyway, I don't really have any sage advice (other than with my son it passed shortly), I ust found it really interesting that it is happening to someone else!
