Her self esteem is important too. If it helps her feel better and less self conscious about her imperfection, help her with that.

Get a quality product tho. Not something from CVS or like that. I'd find one that a health food store would carry and read the ingredients carefully. There are certain ingredients you would not want to have in it, being as you're already dealing with something. Better Health, or Whole Foods would have better quality products. Or go online and look for organic, healthier products.

I'm sorry you and your daughter have to deal with this. I see that there were a lot of really great suggestions below, I don't think I have anything new to add. I did want to suggest maybe a visit to a therapist. Please don't take that the wrong way, I'm not suggesting that something is "wrong"...but maybe she can get some pointers on how to be confident and how to deal with any harsh words that may come from other kids. I'd honestly recommend taking her to the mall and asking at the different counters (Clinique, MAC, etc. to see what they recommend). I personally use MAC, tried Bobbi Brown (and didn't like it) - it's such a personal thing.

I'd also look into theater make-up which is much heavier.

Have you considered asking a dermatologist as well what they recommend? I'd guess a good dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon who does a lot of facial surgeries would be able to recommend certain brands the rest of us are not completely familiar with.

Try Bare Minerals it is a all natural make up the foundations are powder. They blend and match most skin colors. The foundation does not cake and looks so natural. I have never been much of a person whom got into make-up and break out from everything and have allergies to some really odd things. I tried it after seeing the commercial one day 4 years ago and fell in love with it. It does pretty much everything the advertisement states it does. The difference between this and the others on the market is it is all natural my sister preformed a test on it as in placing the powders in water I cant remember one floats the other doesn't and that proves it is real minerals.

The store near me that carries it charges no more than what it is priced on the web site and will even ship it to me at no cost to me. Which the web site you will pay shipping. If Sephora charges more then the web site. The store in Fashion Square Mall in Saginaw is the one I use.

I have used Dermablend to cover scars and discolorations before and it worked really well. I liked that it didn't feel cakey or heavy, and if you set it with the powder it comes with it is water/sweat proof. I use mineral makeup for every day, but I don't know if it would be enough to hold up to a little one's active day. You could always call a local dermatologist and see if they have any recommendations or maybe even product samples you could try. (And of course always protect her scars from the sun if possible!)

My daughter is in first grade. She has gone through ten surgeries to remove a large birthmake (nevus) on her left cheek and we're still going. She has a lot of facial scaring.

I only tried make-up once and I just couldn't get it to look natural with her young skin. I also researched make-up and heard a lot of great things about Dermablend (supposedly available at Macy's and JcPenny). I had planned on getting a consultation for her but she never asked to have it covered up so we never went - I didn't want to force the issue with her if it wasn't an issue for her.

Birthmarks.com has a section on make-up that you may find useful. There have also been vast improvements with cover-up make-up and spraying techniques.(I've also heard great things about microskin that you can actually swim in.) I am curious as to what you find. Would you mind sharing it with me?

Dermablend is a very full coverage makeup and lasts very well (more like a stage make up)...and Bare minerals covers very well, also. I'm not sure what you're needing...but those are both very good make ups.
Not that you asked for my opinion on using the make up.... I think, as far as putting make up on a five year old goes...you're probably on the right track. Once she realizes she CAN cover, if she wants to.... she may be inclined to only use make up when she wants...you go Mom! Every child is different

Try mineral makeup, it's more natural and you can adjust the coverage by putting on more or less, plus you can get a few different shades and blend them so that she looks natural no matter what time of the year it is. You can get them from the drugstore or order it from Avon/Mary Kay/etc. There are also the ones on TV like Sheer Cover and Bare Minerals, and I'm pretty sure those are available now at beauty supply stores, like Ulta. If you take her into a store like Ulta they can show you how to apply it (usually for free if you buy the products). That way she can learn too and be able to do touch ups if she needs to. It sucks that she has to use makeup at such a young age, but you want her to feel confident and I think that's the most important thing.

My first stop would be the dermatologist. They will be able to tell you what is safe to use on her young skin, and what will work well. I don't think I would use anything that is made for adults or that you get at a drugstore. Even though I use regular makeup myself, there are a lot of harmful chemicals in makeup that I would not want to put on my pre-pubescent daughter, because they can affect their hormones. So I would be very careful there, even of the so-called "natural" products, some of which were listed below. They are not very natural when you check the labels. Like I said, I do use them myself, I just would be more careful for my child since they are still young and growing. You can check this website too www.cosmeticsdatabase.com and it gives a lot of info about the safety of individual beauty products, you just look them up by type or name. But to get an idea of one that is safe and will work well, I would go to the dermatologist.

I also agree that you should maybe let her talk to a therapist, or maybe just consult with one yourself on the best way to get her comfortable with this. I am not saying you shouldn't let her cover it up, I would probably make that same choice, and I know you didn't come by it lightly. But the probability of keeping it covered constantly every day, all day is pretty slim for a young active child, so there is probably going to be a day soon enough that a classmate sees it. And if is has been covered to that point it might be even more noticeable to the other kids and get more attention. I would want to have some coping skills for her in advance of that happening. I hope she makes a smooth, happy transition into school, I know that this is scary for all of you. Good luck!

This is going to be hard. They go to school 180 days a year, and it's going to be a lot to put something on it every day. Also, kids wash their hands splash paints, and it's going to smudge or get messed up during the day at least some of the time. And her skin colors will change slightly with the seasons and different sun exposures, so you're going to have to find several shades that will work. Perhaps you can talk with the doctor / plastic surgeon to see about what can be done to reduce/heal the scar to make it less noticeable? I know it seems easier to hide it, but it might be better just to have her classmates get to know your daughter without covering it up.

Plastic surgeons as well as dermotolgist normally have a medical make up line to offer their patients. Have you spoken to her plastic surgeon to get advice? I know this can be very hard for your little girl but what if the makeup rubs off as it most likely will with interacting with her classmates and play time. Then a kid could catch her off guard and ask her about her scar. Is there anyway you and hubby can do some research on children with scars and how they deal with them showing? I'd hate to have her in a situation where she would feel "exposed". I'd rather want to find a way for her to learn to live with it and use creams that will try to reduce the scars. Kids her age are more accepting once they are told what it is they will move on and enjoy your daughter and her friendship.

There are a couple of websites you can try that specialize in concealing scars. It is a bit pricy ($16+). Your daughter will have to get into a good habit of washing it off everyday, as that can lead to skin problems in the future. Good luck to you and your daughter!

Before you try make up have you tried any of the scar reduction products?

To know (makeup trick)

- 1 thin layer of gel deodorant / antiperspirant (let it dry)
- 1 layer of coverup
- Powder

Repeat until completely covered/ invisible. Deoderant, coverup, powder, deodorant, coverup, powder, deodorant, coverup powder.

It will last though MAJOR physical activity; sweat/rubbing/ etc. We used to do this in the USMC when we had to cover up bruises on our face or necks.

Like Denise J. said, Dermablend is the way to go. It's a makeup that's specially designed for severe scars and things like that. They have a counter at Macy's and will show you exactly how to cover up your daughter's problem areas. I'd check their website. I agree with everyone saying to talk to your plastic surgeon about the makeup - you will get the best quality and safest for your daughter that way. However, one thing to consider is to go in with your daughter on the first day and just talk to the kids. Kids at that age aren't going to be mean about it, they are merely curious. Tell them what it is, explain to them (in small words of course, lol) what caused it and you may be surprised at how little they ask or tease after that.
