Preschool Swim Lessons in Abington/Jenkintown Area

I'm looking for swim lessons for my children, ages 2 and 5. They both love water but have never taken formal lessons and I'd like to get them some experience before summer comes. I'm open to any setting, including private lessons. If you've had a good experience, please share. I'd prefer a site close to Abington/Jenkintown but would drive a bit for a really great experience. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Dear AA,
I had three children. The first was a "water baby"...swam underwater at 4 mos. The second swam underwater around 5 and the third was swim team at 7 years of age.
Local "Y"'s have a good structured program, but I do not know at what age they start. Sometimes children do better in group lessons. It is sometimes trial and error.
If you are comfortable, I can tell you things to do and look for when you are working with your children. You can email me if you like.
In high school I learned water ballet and was on a swim team. I did SCUBA later. I still swim.
I think it is very important that children feel comfortable in the water. I have volunteered info to many parents.
Feel free to email me if you like,
E.

We did lessons at our local Y and then the local high school when they were 4. All were great. I'd check out the Abington Y and Abington High; if you don't mind a short travel, I'd check out the Ambler Y.

We love the Greater Plymouth Community Center. They have classes and private lessons and you don't have to be a Plymouth Meeting resident (it will just cost a little more).

My boys take swimming lessons at the Hatboro Y. Both started at 6 months old and are now fishes in the water. The 4 yr old is learning to dive into the deep end while the 20 month old refuses adult help since he figured out how to get around on his own.

The Y has tons of classes that are separated by age and ability. The classes are also structured to be small, so that the children don't have to wait long for their turn. Your 5 yr old would be in a preschool class, while the 2 yr old would be in a parent/child class (unless the child is comfortable in the water and turns 3 during the session, then they can go in a preschool class)

Good luck!
T.

I had a good experience at the Abington YMCA (but I wouldn't call it "really great").

My son is 4 and we did a parent and tot class when he was 2 and a beginners class last spring when he was 3 at the Philadelphia Sporting Club in Chalfont (?) on County Line Rd. It was 10 weeks, 1/2 hour per session and he loved it. Check them out.

I know there is the YMCA in abington as well, but I have never been.

P.S. - many places will let you have a trial lesson for free.
