Swimming Lessons Roxborough/Manayunk Area?

I am trying to find swimming lessons in the Roxborough/Manayunk area for my almost 3 year old. I know about the YMCA, but I was hoping there was something out there or someone that someone has used before. I would ideally like to find someone with a pool willing to teach individual or small group lessons as I have a number of friends who would be interested as well. A lot of the courses out there are either "Fun in the water" classes for mommy and me that really don't teach swimming but help children to be comfortable in the water or ones that require your child to be independent in the water. My child is happy in a pool, but not yet ready to be on his own to learn. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I would also be willing to travel as long as the lesson times were reasonable.

I know you said you know about the Y, but I teach the class you are looking for at the Hatboro Y. It's called Perch+. It is not a "lets get used to the water class," it's a "your too advanced for the baby classes, but too young for the the preschool classes". I teach it the same way I teach the independent preschool classes, except the parents are helping. At my Y, it's an invitation only class, but 3 & 4 yr olds are usually just allowed to enter the class. As far as I know, our 2 Ys are supposed to have the same classes, so they should have it as well.

Good luck!

HI H.-
i do some teaching at the Abington CLub for children, and usualy i do wait unitl they are 4, but i have started with 3 yo kids, too - depends on the child as to whether they will or won't be ready for lessons. i don't know if jenkintown is too far for you to go?
but i typically teach private lessons and sometimes 2-3 but you have to provide the group as i do not make group lessons. so if you have a freind whose child is about the same age and the same level of swimming it may work. but at that age it is sometimes hard to take on more than 2 as then one gets bored and their attention span is already limited.
feel free to call me if you have other questions.

H.,

I don't have a direct answer to your question, but I just wanted to let you know that when my kids were little, they took great swimming lessons at our local YMCA, starting with the mommy-and-me type and progressing into other lessons. They were fantastic, and classes closed out immediately, they were that popular. We really liked the classes there. When my kids were 4, we switched them to Saturday morning classes at our high school, which were terrific, too. They also received (and continue to receive) American Red Cross swimming lessons at their day camp. They became good swimmers at an early age, and both of them swam on the swim team at camp.

Good luck.

Hi, H.! I don't really have any solutions to your question. I was actually really interested in what Tracey said about the Perch+ course at the Hatboro Y. We had a very unpleasant experience with the 3-year-old class at the Spring Valley Y in Limerick/Royersford. The mothers were not allowed to help, and I had to sit on the sidelines listening to my child scream for 1/2 an hour. Furthermore, when I decided it was not for me, I was not allowed to withdraw, so I paid $90 for the privilege of listening to someone do that to my child. Then when I tried to speak to the director of the Y she wouldn't return my call. So, needless to say, none of us are too crazy about that Y right now. Good luck, I hope your experience is better than mine.
