Pregnant but Not Gaining Much Weight

I'm sixteen weeks pregnant, but so far I've only gained about a pound. Should I be concerned? I've always been pretty small and I just seem to be having a hard time gaining weight even though I feel like I eat all the time. (my tummy is growing I'm just not gaining)

What can I do next?

If you're doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't be. I had terrible morning sickness with my first so I actually LOST weight in my first trimester and slowly started gaining weight in my second. I actually gained most of my weight in the third trimester and ended up gaining 22 lbs. total. My daughter was a healthy 7 lbs. 3 oz. so don't worry - that weight will come soon enough :) Everyone is different!

ah, I remember that worry. Then about the 5th or 6th month I started putting on weight like you wouldn't believe and ended up being at a 60 lb gain. Same thing in my second pregnancy. So, don't worry it's early to gain.

Is your doctor concerned? If not and the baby & bump are growing as it should be then I would not worry too much , some people don't gain a lot at all in the early weeks and then gain more during the last few weeks. Also if you suffered with nausea/vomiting in the beginning then you may have lost some weight and are still gaining those lbs at the moment.

Consider yourself lucky! I didn't gain weight with my 2nd until 20 weeks! As long as you are measuring on track and the baby has a strong heart beat, you are just fine!

No, I think you are fine. In my first 14 weeks I lost 9 lbs. I believe it was between my 20 wk and the next months appt that I gained 8 lbs. I was so hungry and couldn't stop eating...full meals every 2 hrs. I ultimately gained 25 lbs by the end (from my lowest pt). I was overweight, but my midwife wasn't concerned at all. Is your dr? Just continue to eat healthy food and, I believe, 500 more calories than before pregnancy and the baby should be fine. Get lots of protein to avoid hypertension.

As long as you're measuring ok and the baby has a strong heart beat I wouldn't worry. I only gained 12 lbs. with my first and only 15 with my second. As long as everything else is going well it just means you have less to loose after baby! :)

Honestly, if your doctor isn't concerned I wouldn't be either. Your belly is still growing which means the baby is still growing. Some women gain a lot of weight but others do not. I myself gained 70 lbs with my first baby and 50 with the second. But my girlfriend is due this week and she has only gained 23 lbs. As long as you can feel your baby moving and your doctor is ok with it, I wouldn't worry too much. But if you would like to gain more, try eating more carbs (ie. Pasta, Rices, etc) - and don't skimp out on desert=)

dont worry, itll come. Im 22 weeks and have only gained 10, and no one believes im pregnant. Maybe because im almost 6 feet tall, i have a lot more room ! Anyways i was super concerned too, i actually lost a few pounds during the first trimester, but it slowly adds back on. Just eat when your hungry, and youll be fine.

If you are like most of us and have some reserves, then gaining nothing for the first 12 weeks is fine. After that you should gain at a steady rate. I gained 19lbs over my entire pregnancy and my doctor was delighted as she said that 17lbs was baby and all that went with baby and beyond that was just weight gain. The guidelines have been adjusted downward recently. Also if you are doing less exersize you may be loosing muscle. I would talk to your doctor about this and see what he/she thinks but don't stress about it. Get a nutritious diet, and take your folic acid supplement. Good luck

I didn't really gain any weight with either of my girls due to being so nauseus all the time the 1st 5 months. In fact I lost 6-8 pounds the 1st few months, but my doctor wasn't concerned at all. You will probably end up gaining a lot in the last 3 months of pregnancy. I looked pretty small with both pregnancies and had 8 pound babies that are perfectly healthy, so I wouldn't worry about it. You will have less weight to lose after.

I was overweight before this pregnancy and have only gained 4 pounds. I am 30 1/2 weeks along. I asked my doctor about it a week ago and she said that they only wanted me to gain 10 lbs for the whole pregnancy since I was overweight to begin with.

I know you said you were on the skinny side to begin with, but I wouldn't worry as long as you can eat healthy. Bring it up at your next apt.

Are you keeping food down? I'm 15 weeks and have lost 12 pounds so far. This is my 2nd pregnancy - with my first, I lost 20 lbs in the first trimester. My son was 6 lbs 14 oz when born...and perfectly healthy.

Don't worry if your getting prenatal care. If you aren't seek out a midwife or OB now and get some prenatal care.

Good luck! C.

Don't worry everybody is different. I always lost 15-25lbs with all my pregnancies and never made it into positive numbers with my 1st, 2nd,or 3rd. I think with my 4th I finally made into postive numbers it was like 4-5lbs and he ended up weighing 8lbs9oz and healthy. You and your little one will be fine. Congrats!

I would not be worried, as long as your doctor isnt. I am 19 weeks and have lost 13 lbs, but I have room to lose, my doctor said as long as the baby is growing and I am eating its okay.

I didn't gain a whole lot either. In fact I was so sick with my pregnancies that the first 16 weeks or so I would LOSE weight. If you are eating well and your OB isn't concerned, than I wouldn't worry about it. My doctor always reassured me that the baby takes what it needs. ( Which is why I was on IV nutrition!!!)

Which it means that your baby is gaining all the pounds and that's the idea!!. For sure you will gain pounds later . Ask your doctor about the weight of your baby. Doctors also have all the information about the pounds that you are supossed to gain this next months. I understand that the pounds should'nt be more than 25.
Sometimes you loose also weight because of the baby , "he or she eats all that you eat".
Congrats and enjoy your pregnancy!!, It's belly time!!

I was the same way with all 4. The first 5 months I lost 5 lbs total (I didn't have any "morning sickness" at all. Just the way my body adjusted. Then I gained like 2 lbs a month starting at 5 months & then & then 1 lb every 2 weeks the 6 weeks. Not gaing weight doesn't always mean that something is wrong. Sometimes, that's just how it is. My kids birth weight ranged from 6ish lbs. - 8 lbs & I only gained like 20 lbs total. My doctor wasn't concerned. He said women shouldn't be purposefully eating unhealthy stuff just to gain weight. Then women complain they can't get the weight off.

This happened to me and I was pg with twins! I did finally start to pop and gain weight after 20 weeks for sure by 22 and then by 26 oh man I wish it would have slowed down for me. So it will come, your body is getting used ot all the extra calories it is using to grow your baby and it is good for your blood pressure and kidneys you do not over work them! Congrats and enjoy!J.

I dont gain a lot with my pregnancies either. I lose a lot during the first trimester and then slowly gain back. This time around I lost 11 pounds in my first trimester and am just now back to my pre-pregnancy weight at 26 weeks. As long as you are eating like you should be I would not worry about it. It will be helpful at the end of the pregnancy and after the pregnancy to get back down to where you were.

You are still in early pregnancy so I would not be too concerned. Just make sure you are eating nutritious meals and often such as 5 meals instead of just 3. Also, be sure to take a prenatal supplement. Your Dr should be monitoring you; if there is still no weight gain by 20 wks or so, then I would be a little concerned.
