Pregnancy Related Hair Loss .....

I had a baby three months ago and my hair is beginning to fall out. With my first child I had significant hair loss. I found a topical treatment that slowed the hair loss and helped grow my hair back, but I forgot the name and I was in a different state so I can't go back to the store. Does anyone know anything about this? Since both of my kids were excellent babies, both slept through the night by the first month, I don't think stress is a huge factor.

Any advice would be amazing.

Thanks, J.

So What Happened?

Nioxin, that's it !!! Thank you so much for all the great advice. It's nice to have people who understand. Thank you, J.

Another update. I took the advice of a few moms who responded to my post and had my thyroid checked. It turns out I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Now I'm working with my doctor and the hair loss is returning to noormal.

Thanks again, J.

I'm not sure of the product that you are refering to, but my beautician said I needed to either continue taking my prenatals or take a womens multi vitamin. She said that would help with the deficiences that child birth causes. It actually worked. I thought I was going crazy with the amount of hair I was losing!!

I saw a doctor for my hair loss (in 2004) because I was so concerned. He told me that it was not unusual and was a hormonal thing. I know of at least three other Mom's who had similar issues with hair loss. Although if you see a doctor they will make sure you don't have another health problem (like thyroid). He told me to take Biotin which is a B vitamin. I got it at GNC. I noticed a big difference after a month or so. So if you're not still taking a prenatal vitamin start again and add the biotin as well.

Hi J.,
My name is B. G. This was happening to me after my son was born. I asked my dr, My hair dresser, and everyone. Then I read the my birth control pill package and it said it causes hair loss. I stopped taking them and my hair stopped falling out. So if your on b.c. you might want to try something different for a little while and see if that helps.

While pregnant you have a lot of hair growth and then you shed it after the baby is born and it can be quite a lot of hair coming out all at once. It's not a problem unless you begin to have balding patches. Have you had your thyroid levels checked? Hair loss can occur when your thyroid isn't functioning properly and that can happen after childbirth. A simple blood test is used to check the thyroid.

Try Nioxin Cleanser. Its a professional product used to help prevent hair loss. You won't wanna buy it from a drug store, just from a salon. If you buy it anywhere else you can't be sure that you are using the real thing. I am a hairstylist and have seen this work for many people. Hope this helps

J.,

I am having this same issue and my daughter is 8 months old this week. I have to sweep the bathroom floor nearly every day. I am breast feeding still and was told by my OB and pediatrician that this is normal and will continue until my daughter is weaned due to hormonal changes. If you are nursing I would check with your pediatrician before taking anything orally or even putting a product on your hair if there are any unusual ingredients. You'd be surprised how many things are absorbed through our skin.

Hi J., I had the same problem. I think I could have made a wig with all the hair I lost on a daily basis. It eventually grew back and stress is what causes it. You body has been through the trama and stress of delivery and it takes a few months to see the effects from it. (my chiropractor told me that) So jsut be patient it will grow back. I have a 16 month old and a 3 year old now and my hair is thicker than before my 3 year old was born.

This sounds perfectly normal to me. If you thought pregnancy had an exclusive on all the strange bodily symptoms (remember those red palms, those bleeding gums?), think again. Postpartum symptoms can be equally funky…and seemingly random. Take hair loss, for example. Many women find that their hair falls out — sometimes in huge amounts — after having a baby. But before you worry that there's more hair on your brush than on your head, you should know that you're not going bald; you're just catching up on normal hair loss.

Normally, the average head sheds 100 hairs a day — just not all at once, so you don't usually notice them. During pregnancy, your hormones keep those hairs from falling out (which is why your hair feels thicker during pregnancy). But all good things must come to an end, and fall out they must. So expect all that hair that hung around during your pregnancy to shed sometime after delivery (usually between three and six months postpartum). You'll take comfort knowing that by the time your baby is ready to blow out the candles on his or her first birthday cake (and has a full head of hair of his or her own), your hair should be back to normal, too.

Talk to your practitioner if your hair loss is excessive. Sometimes hair loss, accompanied by other symptoms, is a sign of postpartum thyroiditis.

I believe that the hair loss is okay. When you are pregnant your hair is extra thick because of the vitamins and hormones, but after you have the baby you don't have all the hormones so much anymore so your hair falls out. My OB said it was natural when I had the problem.
