Potty Training -- Regressing at Night

Hi. My 2.5yr old daughter was fully potty trained fully at 21 months only after 2 weeks.. including at night wearing underwear. She was doing great for about 2 month and then starting wetting her bed at night. This has been a 1.5 month now and it is basically a given that she will wet her bed. We are making her go before bed and are even waking her up around 11-12pm to make her go again but she inevitably wets her bed around 3-4am (waking us up because of it) or she is wet when we wake her up. I have not gone to pullups since I was hoping we could train her out of this but I am tired of doing laundry every morning. ;-). Anyone go through this before? Any ideas? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the input. She is now in pull-ups and we are just going with the flow ;-). Thanks.

Hi,
Staying dry throught the night does take longer. Pediatricians will tell you it's not uncommom until age 4 or later for children to not be trained through the night. I would just put her in pull ups for the night, and it's less stress for everybody. When she is consistently dry then try again without them.
Good Luck

She's not regressing- she was never developmentally ready for this in the first place. She's not sleeping, and neither are you. Put her in a diaper or pull up, tell her that her sleep is much more important, and forget about it. If she's still wet at age 6, see a pediatric urologist - but at this age, she is completely normal and the 21 month thing was really a fluke. The bladder is not yet ready to send a "full" signal to the brain, which isn't ready to wake her up. This is going to stress you all out if you try to push it - it's not a question of "training" at this point - it's purely physiological. For many kids, if they are pushed, it makes it much worse in the long run.

Very few 2.5-year-olds are physically ready to make it through the night without wetting the bed. Pediatricians don't normally advise doing anything about bedwetting before age 6 for girls and 7 for boys because if a child is wetting the bed before this it usually means they aren't physically ready yet - even if they want to they can't wake themselves up if they need to go to the bathroom. Since she wets the bed around the same time each night, you can either get her up right before (around 2:30am) and take her to the bathroom or save yourself sleep and put her in diapers or pull-ups until she is consistently staying dry through the night. Trying to train a child to make it through the night before they are ready often makes bedwetting worse and can cause regressions with daytime potty training too.

sounds like your little one is a very sound sleeper. which is a good thing. i would suggest putting on a diaper or pull ups at night. don't stress yourself or her. my daughter, who is now 27, did wear them at night until she was 5yrs old, at which time she took them off and never wore or needed them again.good luck.

Maybe a silly question, but do you make sure she's not drinking anything before bed?
I'm only beginning to potty train my 22 month old so I can't offer any first hand experience about this.

I don't think you *can* 'night-train' a two year old. They either can hold it or they can't. Make it a non-issue. Start putting her in diapers at night and don't discuss it otherwise.

i am going through exactly the same thing right now with my 3 year old daughter. i was doing the laundry thing too and i just can't anymore. so i finally stopped worrying so much about it and went to the pullups. the thing with my daughter was that she didn't wake up. so we would find her in the morning with pee from head to toe. i was more worried about her skin. so yeah it stinks, but i know it's not forever. good luck..

I know exactly what you are going through right now. My son who is 3 and has been trained for some time now just started wetting the bed at night. He was doing great with underwear at night and to be honest I was a little surprised. It started last week when I started having him wear his feety pj's and he just goes into a really deep sound sleep. He would sleep right through the night and wake up in the morning all wet. I told him he is going to have to wear a pull up at night and he has gotten up every morning with a dry pull up on since I put him in them. My daughter went through the same thing and it didn't take her long to adjust, she was out of sleeping in them with no accidents in a couple of weeks and I am almost at that same point with my son. I hope this helps! Good luck!!!
