Potty Training at Night - We Are 1/2 Way There...

My 33 mo old daughter is potty trained during the day, and has been in her "big girl panties" for over six months. At night, she still wears a pull up, doesn't yet get up to go potty in the night and wakes up WET WET WET. I'm not sure when to start night time training - or if you just wait until there are signs she is ready - i.e. getting up to tell us she has to go, or going on her own, or waking up dry. Any suggesitons you have are MUCH appreciated - as always!

I just asked our doctor about this on Tuesday. He said it takes up to a year after potty training to stay dry for some kids. Some kids go as long as 5 or 6 years old before they stay dry at night. The heavier sleepers tend to take longer. If it's a problem for you, you can try to figure out what time at night she wets, and wake her up to go to the bathroom before it happens. You have to make sure she is completely awake, and you have to be completely faithful for about two months or more until she can do it on her own. Anyway, we opted to wait and just buy Pull-Ups on sale. :) GL! I'll definitely be checking back in the hopes of some other things we can try. It might be encouraging to know that in my case we were talking about a boy, and they take longer.

Hey Dena,
My daughter will be 3 at the end of this month and was "half way potty trained" for what seemed like forever! She had the daytime thing down since turning 2, then about 3-4 months later figured out the naptime thing too. About 4 months ago she figured out the night thing. She happened to wake up dry 2 days in a row and we told her if she did it again we would go get her some "special" panties to wear at night. She earned the panties the next day. It took about 2 weeks of "little dribbles" where she would start to go in her panties after going to bed, but caught it before she flooded herself, before she really got the hang of it. She hasn't had an accident since! Too put it simply, with my daughter at least, it was just a matter of her brain and bladder speaking the same language. It wasn't anything that we forced, just positively reinforced when she showed signs of being ready. It just clicked for her. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for posting this. I am right there with you. MY dtr is just 3 and has been day potty trained since 31/32 mo. Nap shortly followed and close to 3 she was having many nights that she did not wet all night. And sometimes she even would not go when she woke in the am for an hour or two. Now all of a sudden (past two weeks) she is wetting EVERY night. The other thing I realized last night is she has stopped waking and coming into our room within the past two weeks (she has not always been a good sleeper, recently went thru a very scared period). Now we are thru that but, she is soaked, sometime by 11pm. Last night I changed her and she squirmed but, stayed asleep. (she used to wake if I did anything). So here is my current conclusion. She has moved to a heavy sleep at night and cannot wake herself. We are happy to have her sleeping thru the night. I am hoping it will come, as some others have suggested, over the next year. I am going back to pull ups (she does not like the idea) and I will make a star chart is she does stay dry. Not a big deal if she does not but, reward if she does. And see what happens. She is my second. My son came to me at 3 yrs and 3 weeks and begged to not wear his pull up at night. (He had taken it off for the previous several nights and put it in the trash after I put him to bed and woke up dry) So needless to say we took it off. He never had an accident. He was SO easy, I guess I have to wait a little with this one. Let me know if you have any break thrus. I will be watching for responses.

you can't rush night time training... its a physiological thing. When her body can do it, it will. Until then just make sure that she goes before bed, maybe limit her liquids after dinner and leave her in pull-ups at night.

There is no real big secret to night time potty training. Just make sure she goes to the bathroom before she goes to sleep. Usually from there the child does it. Sometimes it takes a long time. I would not worry too much. If she is a sound sleeper it will take her longer. Sometimes it just takes a while for their body to develop. Just keep her in pull-ups and don't put any pressure on her to overcome what her body has learn to control.
