Ok so we started on Friday and she has been doing great. One accident a day usually a poop one. She doesn't tell me when she has to go yet, but if I put her there every few hours she goes pee no problem. Here is my dilema, she seems to have a cold this morning and has runny poop. She usually goes once a day and now at 11:30am she has gone 3 times already in her underwear and once on the potty. She also has a runny nose, what do you do when your child is sick? Keep it up - I have changed her under 4 times already this morning (like I said before we usually have one accident a day) So do I put her back in diapers until she feels better? Put her in a pull-up? Or keep changing the underwear? HELP! I should also mention that I am 6 months pregnant and the poop clean up is making me gag! GROSS!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the advice, poor thing has been feeling terrible all day so I did put her back in diapers for the rest of the day. When she is feeling better we are going right back into underpants!!!

I would put a pull-up on her (if you have them on hand just because it's easier than working with a diaper at potty time since she DOES go on the potty). That way you can still ask her every few hours keeping the same routine, but you don't have the MESS for either of you. And it keeps the potty a positive thing for everyone (not frustration from the mess) and allows her to still try the potty every few hours so she isn't quite as likely to revert back. With the new baby coming, don't be surprised if she does revert back a couple weeks after the baby comes home, but you've still got more time for it to become established so it MAY not be an issue at all with the new baby. Best wishes to you! I'm sure she'll be back to staying dry soon, after she feels better. :)

pull up or diaper....no doubt about it. If she's sick and it's making you sick, a couple days in a pull up isn't going to set you back that far, if at all. It's worth it. She's probably feeling lousy enough without being sad about accidents and feeling gross from dirty pants, so I guessing she'd be glad to make the switch!

I agree. Just put her back in diapers for a few days until she feels better. I had this same thing happen with my son last month and when they are sick it's just too hard to keep up the training. She feels lousy, so wait a week and start again when she's healthy again.

Hi C.,

I would put her back in diapers. She's only 2, which is a young potty trainer. A few days in diapers isn't going to wreck everything you've accomplished so far. I have 3 kids and another on the way, and I have found that better late than early seems to work best when it comes to potty training. Better to spend a few more months in diapers and have only a few days of training, than have it drag out for weeks with a lot of frustration. It is also key that she be able to tell you when she has to go, and unfortunately, she may revert back to wanting/needing a diaper after the baby comes. This is quite common. Hope this helps, and congrats on the comming little one!
