Potty Training - Ingleside, TX

I have recently started to potty train my almost 2 year old. She does pretty good with going pee on the potty but will not go poop. This wasn't that big of a deal until she started to go poop in her pants then take then off and make a HUGE disgusting mess. I don't want to punish her because I don't want her to be scared to go poop but this has got to stop. Yesterday she woke up from her nap and took off her poopy diaper and got it all over her crib. Has anyone else had this problem? If so how did you get your child to stop taking off their dirty panties/diapers? AND how can I get her to start going on the potty???

What can I do next?

Hi I totally agree W/ Shannon. I have three kids 7,12,14 and all of them potty trained around 3yrs. You might try a reward system like putting pennies in a jar or even M&M's works really well too. Potty training takes a lot of time and patience. Don't worry she'll get it eventually. Best of Luck

Wow! You are describing my life a few months ago perfectly! My son also did this (he sleeps in a toddler bed though, but smashed the poop all over the room). We had the hardest time getting him to go poop on the potty. The pee was a piece of cake, but we just couldn't get him to poop on the potty. The best advice someone gave me was from a behaviorist and friend who said that the muscle movements and what is required to make a BM are different and that he'd have to experience making a BM on the potty at least 3 times before he is able to understand what he has to do when he has those urges and poop where he's supposed to. Also, my son was very curious about his poop and (gross, I know) loved to play in it. We spent MANY MANY clean-up sessions talking about how poo-poo is yucky to play in and can make you sick. One thing that worked was letting him watch while my husband had a BM. Daddy talked to him about what he was doing and they both listened for "plops" and giggled when they heard them. I know it sounds gross, but it worked, because he loves to make "plops" even today!

Pooping takes a lot longer for kids to learn. Both of mine pee pee trained quickly, but took longer to poop in the potty. It scares them. Just be patient and keep encouraging her. Eventually she'll get it. I would put the poop in the potty after they pooped in their underwear and say, "poo poo goes in the potty." She'll get it eventually- and remember she is young.

I too, agree with shannon. I tried potty training my daughter right at two but she just wasn't having it! She did the same thing. I believe all curious kids play with their "poop" when they have access to it! As gross as it is to us.. come on... it has a great texture and it's warm! How could they resist. I frustrated both of us for a while until I just went back to pull ups and suggestions. About 3 months ago we talked about big girl panties and going in the potty... got a "dora button" which plays music and cheers when you press it (pampers potty training kit) and she loved it! She decided basically on her own that she was ready and that day she started going tinkle and "toot" in the potty and has been 24/7 in big girl underwear since then! We have only had maybe two accidents since then. She will be 3 next month. Don't stress and definitely don't punish!!!! until age 3 reasoning with a child is like reasoning with a wall.. their brains just aren't up to that yet!

Best of luck!

My kids potty trained closer to 3, especially pooping in the potty. I think you may be expecting too much from her. My kids are 5 and 8 now but it seems like the reading I did said kids have more physical control of bowel and bladder when they are closer to 3. I completely understand your eagerness. And after all, you are "training" her to have this control one day. She'll get it. It's like other milestones, she will do it when she is ready.
Best wishes.

HI MY SISTER IN LAW HAD THIS PROBLEM AND ONE OF THE THINGS SHE DID WAS TO TELL HER DAUGHTER THAT IF SHE POOPED ON HERSELF AND MADE A MESS SHE WOULD GET NO SNACK AND AFTER HER DAUGHTER REALIZED SHE WAS SERIOUS SHE STARTED TO DO BETTER.I DON'T KNOW IF THAT WILL WORK FOR YOU BUT I THOUGHT I WOULD TRY TO HELP.I HAVE 2 SONS AND DIDN'T HAVE A REAL PROBLEM EXCEPT MY YOUNGEST SON WAS SCARED OF THE LITTLE POTTY AND HAD TO USE THE GROWN UP POTTY(LOL)

Hi I went through the same thing with my daughter who is now going to be 4 yrs old. I got really fustrated with her but I would pay attention to when she usually had her accidents and time it from there so that the next time or the next day I would sit her on the toilet around that time and really and truely just have her sit there till she went. To keep her busy I would give her a book to look at or I would sit and read to her. I think that it is just a little scary for them to see that stuff come out of them thats all and I would say that overall it took a couple of weeks till she finally figured it out.But when she did have accidents I would just talk to her about it and when she went to the potty I would praise her. I hope this helps a little, I know exactly what you are going through good luck!!!

I had the same experience. I even had my son take off his diaper and poop on the floor like an animal. He even would poop in the tub when taking a bath then scream when he saw the poop floating around in the bath water. The way I finally got my son to use the potty was when he actually went poop in his pants or on the floor I would place him on the potty and let him sit there for a moment and told him that poop goes in the potty you are sitting on. Also him being around peers his age and older kids that use the potty is what helped my son adjust to the new change. Also seeing the other kids’ do it made him feel like a big boy. My son turned 3 this pass April. Currently he is flushing, using the potty, and washing his hands. Even whipping off the toilet with toilet paper afterwards. This process took a while, I started potty training my son at 1 1/2 and he really didn't start really utilizing the restroom like a big boy until about 3 months ago.

Good news! She's peeing in the pot! Pooping takes longer to get. I think it's just because it's a big muscle (the sphincter) and because they genuinely don't feel the urge to go until it's too late. And sometimes it's urgent. A little person can make some mighty enormous poops! My daughter was nearly three before she pooped in the pot consistently. She was very regular in that she pooped every morning at about 10:00 am. My husband and I used to plan the morning around it!
"Has she had the morning poop yet?" Etc. We used to bribe her as well. If she made a poop on the potty she got a lollipop. She would sometimes sit there for a while watching Teletubbies and nothing would happen, and then I'd take her out for our morning walk in the park, and then bingo! Fresh air always seemed to work! Don't worry, it's just developmental. She'll get there. It just takes longer than the pee-pee thing. Be patient and buy lots of laundry detergent! Also, for when you go out, you can buy these travel potties which fold up! Have you seen them? They are wonderful!
