My hubby is interviewing for a job in Coraopolis, PA. We would need to relocate from out of state if he gets the job. I am looking for recommendations on GREAT family oriented areas with excellent schools. Any advice would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

We moved here to Pittsburgh about 2 1/2 years ago so the searching is somewhat fresh in my mind. Coraopolis is right near Sewickley, which is where I wish we had moved. Sewickley has GREAT schools (Quaker Valley district) and a really cute pedestrian town. The houses are older, and possibly expensive if they've been rehabbed. I certainly encourage you to check it out.

We are north of there, in the Cranberry Township/Mars/Wexford area. Those areas are probably 25-30 min from Coraopolis (for his communiting) and the traffic wouldn't be bad because he's not going through tunnels. My husband works in the city and we chose to move north, because if we had gone east, west or south of the city he would've had to deal with commutes.

Also check out Edgeworth, Osborne, Ben Avon -- I think they're part of Quaker too, which is rated one of the best school systems in the country I'm told.

We are in the Mars school district, and right near us is Pine-Richland school district which is also phenomenal (but property taxes are 2x higher than mine (they're Allegheny county and we're Butler county).

Caution on Seneca Valley and North Allegheny School Districts as I hear they're really big school systems.

Hope this helps.

I can PM you tonight with TONS of details. We live in Moon Township, which shares the same zip code, 15108. It was recently listed as one of the top 100 zip codes in the country to raise a family. We love the location and stay busy every day if we want, doing affordable things. Good luck!

EDIT: Just to piggyback some of the other comments. Sewickley is a great town, I was born and raised there. One of the perks of living in Coraopolis/Moon, is being 2miles away from Sewickley and enjoying its charm (like Light Up Night happening this Friday) without its uppity residents and outrageous home prices. You can get a 3/2 house with almost an acre lot in Moon for around $130K. You MIGHT get a 1/4 acre lot with a similar house in Sewickley for $800K. I loved growing up there when it was blue collar and it was a true community. Having lived there recently for 3yrs, its very different in a sad way :(. The house I grew up in barely has enough lawn for a lawnmower to pass over it, and it sold for $899K. Friends of ours have a condo, priced at $750K and its been nothing but repair trouble ever since.

Also, if you live in Cornell school district in Coraopolis, they will be combined with Quaker Valley (which is made up of 11 townships, including Sewickley, Osborne, Edgeworth, Leetsdale, Fair Oaks, Bell Acres, Sewickley Heights and others). Now, Sewickley is fighting this because they don't want the "wrong element" mixed with their kids which is a shame. Just because Cornell is mostly minority children doesn't mean they're the wrong element. I hope they resolve that situation quickly, because they have a 'rich kids bully poor kids' problem at QV already. You could live in the part of Coraopolis that goes to Moon Township schools, which is big, but they have great records/test scores and we've been pleased with the curriculum of neighbors'/friends' children.

You also have to be careful about articles rating the top schools. The criteria used for the results is based on how much money is spent on each student, not how well the students do, how many go to college, how many do charity work, etc. Which is why many will see schools listed in the top and wonder how that happened, because the students are in bad shape and have horrible test scores. For the most part, schools are great up this way. If you're looking for private or Catholic, Cori has that.

Cori (Coraopolis)/ Moon is 10-15mins from Robinson, which has your big stores (Costco, Walmart, Sams), malls, dining of all sorts and grocery shopping. Its the new home of Latitude 40, an exciting family entertainment place with bowling, movies, dining, other fun stuff.

Cori is 10-15mins from hundreds of parks. The community pool is in Robinson and is affordable compared to others in North Hills and Cranberry. It has a water play area, a kiddie pool and a big pool. Residents of Robinson pay less than non-residents.

Cori is 20mins from downtown (taking the back roads).

Cori has its own downtown area. Which isn't as picturesque or pristine as Sewickley, but their storeowners don't have to pay astronomical rents and the shopping is much more affordable and realistic. They have a grocery store, post office, a couple banks, a couple gas stations and a McDonalds.

Cori is minutes away from Neville Island, home to Paradise Island and Robert Morris University Sports Complex. I'm not sure how old your children are, but Paradise Island is one of our fave family places. The have toddler bowling, a full restaurant, a beach in the summer including sand volleyball and live music along the river. The Sports Complex is home to hockey and golf for all ages.

Neville Island is an affordable place to live, across the river from Cori, but since its an island, its not always easy to get to places. There are also some depressed parts and some industrial/oil plants on the island making it not-so-desirable. However, we know some folks with amazing homes along the river at Neville Island.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

It sounds like Megan will have your answers - but in general, you are in luck because the Corapolis/Moon area is a great family area with good schools - very suburban. A lot of people live out there and commute into Pittsburgh, because it's such a nice area to live.
