Post-Fever

Our 11 month daughter recently had a fever that lasted almost five days. The fever was not accompanied by ear, sinus, throat, or urinary abnormalities. It’s been almost two days since her fever ‘broke’ and thankfully her appetite is returning. What concerns me is that she’s ready for a nap after being up for two hours. She’s easily irritated (which was seldom the case) and still doesn’t quite seem like herself. Since this is our first child, I’m not certain how long it takes for a baby to regain their stamina. Are there post-fever signs that I should be looking for? What’s other mom’s experience

What can I do next?

E.,
When a childs immune system is down like your daughters is, it can take two days for every day they were sick to fully recover. This is what I was told from my doctor. However if you are really concerned about it, call the triage nurse or go in. No question is a dumb question especially if it involves a life. Do look in her throat, and for rashes as well.

My neighbors baby 1 year old had that vomiting diarreaha virus going around the symptoms lasted 2 days but the baby wasn't back to herself or her sleeping habits for along time like a week after the symptoms were gone.

I wondered too if your little one had any Vaccinations recently. I also would call the nurses station just to voice concerns about the fever (IMO...5 days is too long to not have anything else going with it like vomiting or something).

If she's recently had vaccines...I'd chalk this up as an allergic reaction to something...and be wary of future cocktail-type vaccinations.

Hope she's feeling better soon!

Depending on high the fever is, I probably wouldn't go longer than 3 days without checking in with her doctor. A fever is always a sign that her body is fighting some kind of infection. It may be that she's teething or recently had immunizations but regardless I would definitely call the nurse's helpline and they can tell you if she should come in. Also, there's no telling sign like her behavior, so if you feel like she's not herself then definitely get her checked. Better safe then sorry, right?

I cant relate or even know the signs or symptons associated with a post fever...but you should call your DR. or at least the nurses station and run your concerns to them. They will know what to do and how to help. Could she be teething or hungry, or learning to crawl or walk-this causes kids to become more tired. Rule out the obvious first.

Hi E.,
Has she recently had any vaccinations?
R.

Have you looked in her mouth to see if she has any teeth coming in? This can cause a fever and pain. Look for white areas or red on the surface a tooth would come in.
