My first AFP came back that way. My doctor called and told me, and reassured me that a very high percentage of the tests result in false readings the first time they are done. To relax and give it a week or so and we'd redo the test. We waited 10 days or so, did another test, and it came back fine. It was my first baby. He is perfect. He's almost 12 yrs now.
It is just a screening test.
Do some research online, make a list of questions, and call your doctor. You might ask for an appointment to go over some of your questions. If you have questions about something like this, your doctor is the best place to go for answers. Always write them down, b/c you will forget when you are talking face to face with the doctor. And new info he will give you will raise more questions after you get home.... so do some research in advance so you'll have some of the questions ready before you go.
Good luck.

This is a detailed article about the afp test and choices.

My daughter's afp was positive and she did have the next test done during which they drew out amniotic fluid. Is this the tetra that you mentioned. That test showed negative for birth defects that could be tested using this procedure. Her son was born with a small hole in his heart which closed by its self during the first few days. They did take him in to have that checked a few weeks later and he was fine.

1 in 389 means that 1 pregnancy out of 389 that had the same results that you had will have a birth defect.

My last child was positive afp but nothing is wrong with him. Healthiest one of my three and smart smart smart! He's a year ahead of his peers. Don't let this test worry you.

False positive AFP tests are fairly common. I had one with my first, but an ultrasound showed him to be healthy. He was born two months early, though, because my amniotic sac ruptured. One doctor told me that the AFP might have been positive due to a weak sac.

DO NOT STRESS ABOUT THIS!!! I was pregnant with twins and researched it first. From what I investigated almost all women that opted to get the test done had a positive but in the end the baby/babies were absolutely fine.
I don't think they should even offer this stupid test to people until they work out the kinks to where it is more reliable.
Don't give it a second thought sweetie-your baby is fine. No sense in worrying over something that hasn't happened yet and at that not accurate!!!! Enjoy the pregnancy.

I too had a positive afp test result. My son is now 9 months & all is wonderful with his health. If you take the test to early or to late in ur pregnancy, the results may come back false. Hense the term: false positive. I had 4D ultrasounds done & the doctor said he could see nothing wrong with my son. They check the 4 quarters of the brain, the scull, spine, the chin to see if it pushed in, the length of ea extremities (sp?). For ur next ultrasound, write down a list of question & ask them all. It sound as though all will be well, but this may be a way for you to ease your mind & enjoy your pregnancy.
