Pooping in the Potty - Monument,CO

My daughter will be 3 in August. One day she just decided to start using the potty and she has had very few accidents. The first few days she also pooped in the potty, but now she won't. She waits until naps and bedtime and goes in her diaper. We've tried bribery, sitting with her in the bathroom, putting a little potty in front of the TV (this works sometimes but it's more because she was distracted and just went). She's now getting to the point where she doesn't really want to go in her diaper but won't go in the potty either. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I have to disagree with Julie. She probably "promotes" not using diapers after 3 because she was fortunate with "willing" children...its always easy to give advice when you have not had the actual "problems"....
Dont push it....be patient....believe me, they dont go into the third grade pooping in their pants. SO much is a factor...how old are they?, are they singletons? do they go to pre-school? are they at home with YOU all day?
My DD is "pee" potty trained...she wouldnt poop in there if you bribed her...my solution? Let her do it when she does it. I always feel like when you let it go...they will go.....

I agree about being patient. Sounds like a coincidence/accident that she pooped in the toilet while she was there to pee. Believe me, seriously, believe me! A power struggle over poop is not what you want. I finally gave up on my 3 1/2 year old son after cleaning poop off every surface in my bathroom, from myself, from him and from several other surfaces in my house trying to push him into using the toilet when he wasn't ready. I was ready for years! Six months later... no problem. I asked him if he was ready to be a big boy. Yes, he was, therefore he was to start using the toilet. He also hated the "baby" potty and liked the kid seat that sat on top of the toilet and he used a step stool to get up there.
Good luck, S.!

NO DIAPERS! using diapers while potty training is confussing for children, part of being potty trained is staying dry during the night and at nap time. Don't bribe her to obey you and use the potty, reward her when she obeys you in using the potty, and Discipline her (Not Punish) when she does not obey you in using the potty. At 3 that is way to old to be in a diaper. u

Please read this link, about the same subject. It was posted here on MamaPedia recently.

I have a response in this post.

I would make very sure... that she not get constipated. Because, she is now 'withholding' her poop... and will not go. This is not good.

all the best,
Susan

My daugter was a little older than 3. Here is another vote for being patient and let your child decide when to take an interest again. I refused to let my child use diapers for the poop and she held it fot 7 days and was so constipated I wanted her to wear a diaper to be able to go. Maybe buy a toy and don't let her open it until she poops in the potty. It was a certain barbie for my daughter and if she was trying to sit on the pot, she could look at it in the box and she eventually decided she wanted to poop in the potty like a big girl and was motivated by the new barbie that one sunday afternoon, she sat for hours and then even brought the tiny pot into the kitchen to sit and try as I cooked dinner. She went that evening and never went back to diapers. This too will pass. Best of luck

Try the book called "Potty Training in a Day". It really worked for my first son. I then used the techniques from the book and added a bribery bowl for my second. Both learned in less than a day and NO ACCIDENTS by 2 and 2 1/2.

Now one of the biggest things I learned with the potty training is to get them to do it on their own accord. No asking if they have to go, no pushing them and getting frustrated. When I added the bribery bowl, I filled a huge bowl with things my second boy LOVED and let him dig through it and adore the items. I then took it away and told him he could pick out one toy every time he used the toilet. He screamed and cried and carried on. In the meantime I kept giving him tons to drink (things I would normally never give him, e.g., soda, Koo-aid, etc.) That way he had to pee every 30 minutes or so. He would run up and go then run to the bribery bowl pick a toy, play with it, then flip out that he wanted another. This went on ALL day, but it worked. By day two, it was set and he just went potty or poo poo then went to the bowl. No accidents, no crying.

It is the hardest thing to do but you will find what works for your daughter. Just start with the book and then adjust for her personality. The worst is having to pressure and ask every 10 minutes if she has to go. You both get frustrated.

Good luck!
