Has any one noticed a pain in their hand shortly after delivery. Moving the thumb, picking up heavy objects, even picking up my baby can cause considerable amounts of pain at times. Dr. says its a sprain, but it has been 5 months now and it still hurts daily. Xrays came back ok, no one able to explain why I am having pains on the side of my arm/hand. Wost during late nights. Wondering if anyone else has that issue.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks very much for the responses & suggestions. I have been trying to research on my own since my Dr seems to have no clue and found exactly what Lawrence said. So I am going to try the splint until I find an orthopedic surgeon. I hope this thing goes away soon.
Good luck to you all with your pain as well.

I know this won't help you, but I had my daughter in March so more than 3 months ago. Since I delivered my knees really hurt when getting up or down from a sitting position or if I have to squat. I never had knee pain before and I was also worried because I have to bend and sit and kneel when bathing my daughter and it made me nervous to pick her up in case they gave out. I posed my question on Mamasource and got lots of feedback, but ultimately it seems like it's just one of those "pregnancy" things. A couple of other moms told me about pains but said they went away in months or within a year. I'm still waiting... Good luck with your pain. I also live in Sunrise, maybe our kids will end up in Kindergarten together!

Hi, I agree with Laurence, I had the same thing after my daughter was born another name for it is tendonitis. I ended up going to an orthopedic surgeon, who first put me on a splint, when that didn't work I received 2 cortasol shots and last but no least when things didn't get better when my daughter was exactly 1 I ended up having surgery because it got so bad picking up my daughter or doing anything was so painful. Hopefully yours will go away with treatment since only a very few percentage of women have to go through the surgery. If your Dr. can't figure out what it is, then I would recommend you go to an orthopedic surgeon, they do this types of treatments all of the time. Good luck!

I was going to say the exact same thing as Laurence. Kinda surprised your primary doctor didn't pick up on it?!

I have the same thing and it is getting worse as he is growing, now 9.5 months. I am also using a splint when I am with him and at night to try to stabilize it. It felt like I had broken my wrist sometimes when you have those middle of the night calls to your baby.

Good luck to you and thankfully Laurence said that it goes away... I was wondering. If it gets too bad, you can get a shot of Cortezone.

(Note: My insurance didn't cover it so watch that because your doctor won't know and I got billed $75 for the splint.)

What you describe (and because there is no problem on your X ray) sounds like DeQuervain syndrome, a tenosynovitis that sometimes appears during the last stage of pregnancy or at post-partum, and is increased by repetitive movement of your thumb and wrist (such as lifting and carrying your baby!)

I had this after my pregnancy and it got worse when my baby was between 5 and 10 months. I used a splint to immobilize my thumb and wrist (avoid the piching movement) during night and sometimes during the day. That helped, but the pain was totally gone only when my baby turned 1!

Good luck and take care of yourself.
