Oatmeal

I have just given my 7 month old daughter oatmeal for the first time. She has had rice cereal before her evening bottle for the past 4 months. My question for all of you seasoned mothers would be, do you mix the oatmeal with cereal/breastmilk or do you mix it with fruit?

My other question is how much oatmeal are you putting in the bowl. My daughter is used to her rice cereal pretty thick and it does not seem like the oatmeal thickens up as much as the rice cereal. When I gave it to her this morning I mixed it with 1 oz. of formula and then mixed in some peaches.

Any adivce would be greatly appreciated! This first time mom thing is kind of confusing at times!

What can I do next?

I did both when my daughters started oatmeal. I just stuck with the way they would most likely eat it.

I always mixed it with formula and gave the fruit separate. I know the taste of the oatmeal is ewwwwwwwww but it has given my kids the taste for plain things like plain cereal (cherrios& kixs) It seems like when u give some babies things mixed up they get the sweet taste and that is all they want.

I mix it how ever I felt that day. Sometimes I mixed it with just water or breatsmilk sometimes I added baby food to it. Fruit or Veggies. Then you don't have the sweet problem. My daughter never seamed to mind. As to how much just mix it till it's as thick or thin as you want it.

Regular instant oatmeal I always just mixed with water and occasionally with formula, but mostly just warm water and made it to the consistancy that my daughter would eat it.

Rice cereal and other 'baby' cereals I mixed with either formula or fruit juice.

I totally remember being where you are. With my kids, I mixed their cereal with formula and then did the spoonfuls with half cereal/half baby food. I would start with the veggies and then they'd get some fruit at the end. The oatmeal does mix up differently than the rice or mixed cereals, but you just mix it to the consistency that your daughter will eat it. Congratulations on your little girl! They are such a blessing!

Hi M.,
my kids are all older now, but I read yours and wanted to respond. I would start mixing the oatmeal with breast milk or formula first, unless your daughter has had the fruit already and isn't having any problems with it. Just watch her and she'll let you know! L.

I began by mixing cereal with breastmilk. Later we did fruit, and now we do fruit flavored yogurt with the cereal. We alternate between rice, oatmeal and multi-grain. As for how much, I just go by how thick my daughter seems to prefer it and how much she wants to eat.

Hi M.!
I just have one little guy, so my knowledge is limited. BUT, I did want to just say that the best part about cereal is that you can mix in it whatever you like. I would just put plain water in mine and then mix it to the consistency I liked for how old he was. Then I would mix fruit or whatever in with it. Sometimes I would keep it separate from the fruit or veggies too. Good thing your the mom and you know your baby best! :) There are really no rules.

When I would give my kids the cereal I would mix it with fruit, anything that they liked. I would put a whole jar in and then mix the cereal to the desired consistency. But each child is different in how much they eat. Try different amounts until you find the amount that she seems to be able to consume at a sitting (so that you are wasting anything). But you can also try mixing it with all sorts of things. You could use water, juice, milk (breast or formula), baby food (I used fruit most, but have heard of using a veggie).....whatever works for your daughters tastes.
Good luck and happy eating.

It sounds like your doing great. With that you really should go by what your daughter likes. Try different combinations and consistencies. She'll let you know what she likes. The most important part is to remember how you mixed it the morning you go ah ha. Then you can keep making it the way she prefers. Good luck

That's how I always made it with a little formula or fruit. They seem to like it better. Of course, my youngest went right to regular oatmeal with fruit. He never liked the jarred food and cereal.

I got all ambitious with my #1 (it comes and goes!) and got lots of books from the library to make my own food. All the books were consistent with a couple things. If you introduce veggies before fruit, they won't develope the taste for fruit and have such a hard time with veggies. A fruit is a very strong taste for a baby who hasn't eperienced it before. Breast milk is on the sweet side, but not so powerful as fruit. Peas are always a great starter. It doesn't necessarily go with oatmeal, but you can mi the oatmeal with your milk until it's the right consistency. That's the other thing, taste buds and tongue movement are all new, so consistency is a major factor. If she likes her rice thick, start by thickening peas (or whatever) to that consistency with any grain you're ready for. Just do one at a time so you can keep track of allergies. Good luck!
