Nudity on Regular Tv

i have always been uncomfortable with nudity or sex on regular tv. growing up, my parents would change the channel if someone was even kissing. i don't know if this was because they are mormon or because of family history. i would really like not to be bothered by the occasional boob flash or sex scene on regular cable channels because i like the rest of the show. how do i do that? i do not seem to have become desensitized over the years.
---
i posted this late at night and left out the crucial bit of information. i am not bothered by regular nudity, just what some may consider gratuitous, and only when my husband is around. i guess what it boils down to is jealousy. how do i get over that?

What can I do next?

We got rid of tv a few years ago. I'm so glad! I wouldn't be comfortable with it either. I think it is good and right that you feel bothered by it. I find it shocking how desensitized many people are to these things. I am appalled at the magazine covers in the grocery store!

Nikki, I think you could ask yourself, "Is this nudity or sex in the context of the plot? Are the characters just having meaningless sex, or does the sex have a real place in the storyline? Is the nudity in there JUST to be titillatiing or is it happening at a natural place and time?" For instance, I saw an old movie on TV the other day (1960s!) and a woman was undressing in her apartment, alone, but the TV station "fuzzed out" her bare backside. She wasn't doing a hoochie dance or leaping on a man; she was pondering things important to the plot as she undressed like anyone would undress. No problem, for me. The problem was the prudish US TV fuzzing things. We do not get cable but we do watch a lot of PBS (British shows) and an international TV station with French, Swedish and other international shows, and on all those nations' TV, showing some flesh is taken as very normal, both in and out of the context of sex. The fact it's fuzzed here makes us look, frankly, pretty provincial. But to get back to your question -- If you really are uncomfortable, watch other shows; but if you like a show otherwise and can truly say, "Wait, the nudity or sex is part of the plot and is not just stuck in there," then that might help you enjoy these programs more.

I don't know but I'm sick of it too. It seems like it has gotten worse, and more brazen, over the last 4-5 years.

I wish I had the guts to pull the TV's out of my house.

Hi Nikki,

You have some good answers here. My only addition would be to find some deep breathing/relaxation techniques to employ when you find yourself getting uncomfortable or tense. Teaching/telling your body to relax when your brain is getting triggered can help you in the long run, especially if it becomes a habit for you. . Certainly, differentiating between different kinds of nudity can be helpful, and so is teaching your body to be comfortable when confronted with it.

Here's a website that might help you in figuring out *how* you want to change this reaction/habit of being uncomfortable:

Good luck!

I'd rather my daughter see nudity or sex on TV than violence. IMO, there is WAY too much violence being shown.

I like the answers about context, cause gratuitous sex/violence is just annoying and useless.

Perhaps take an art class or check out art books that focus on the human body to get used to it in a positive setting. You may still be annoyed to the gratuitous stuff, but the natural stuff may bother you less.

I don't understand why there is so much flack about nudity on TV.

I feel the violence, killing, blood, guts etc is far worse for children to see than a naked boob.

i think its just how you personally are. you cant help that it makes you feel uncomfortable. your parents must have been conservative and thats ok. but it has taught you to be uncomfortable with that type of thing on tv.

personally i don think day time or evening tv should have it just to make the show good.

it might just be your personality, as someone said. try not to let it get to you and realize this is a bit of an issue if it is affecting you so deeply even as an adult.

and then realize your parents didn't do you any favors. pretending the world isn't there doesn't make it go away. neither would getting rid of your tv. then your kids would go through what you are as adults. do you think that is a positive gift you would be giving them? think about it from that perspective.

Get rid of cable. We've never had it. With a digital TV or converter, you should be able to get enough channels to occupy you. Whenever I travel and try to watch cable in hotels, I can never find anything I want to watch anyway. If there is a specific show you want to see, you might even be able to rent it.

My parents were the same way and so am I and that's why we watch our shows after the kids go to bed. We don't watch anything obseen but we watch Breaking Bad or Wipeout, etc.

I grew up with a father who would take me to art class with him, and their were nude models. So, for me, the human body is very natural and beautiful. As is the same for sex. I think it's all in the way you see it, as is your comfortability surrounding it.

I honestly prefer shows that do not center around sex. But occasionally, fine. If you are looking at becomming more comfortable with nudity and sex as a whole, it's important to view it in a different way. I know , for me, having seen many nude models, and visiting art galleries as a child it taught me to be comfortable in that sense, because underneath our clothes we all are naked.

Can you think of ANY hairless animal that looks good naked?
They have hairless rats/guinea pigs/cats/dogs (pets for people who are allergic to pet dander) and every time I see one it just creeps me out.

For the most part, a naked human being is not a pretty sight.
People are flabby (all those muffin tops) or anorexic (can count their ribs from any angle at 20 paces) and even people who think they look good are not as hot as they like to think they are (cellulite, etc).
In places where topless sunbathing is allowed, there might be a few with interesting bone structures but when the 80 yr old grandma takes off that bikini top and her chest flops down past her belly button most are ready to look the other way.
Any old guy walking around nude dangles his bits halfway to his knees (they have a lift procedure for that now, similar to a boob job).
With the sunburn, bug bites, sticking when you sit down and the lack of pockets, I'll skip the nudity, thank you very much.

We don't watch a lot of live tv anymore.
We watch our favorite shows on DVD, so we have total control over the violence/nudity, and we don't watch it.

Buy a cable network.

Or go to a nudist colony.
