Nighttime Accidents with 4 Year Old

My son turned 4 a month ago. He has been potty trained since 2 1/2 and nighttime trained since about 2 and 10 months. He used to have infrequent accidents at night but he has not had nighttime bed-wetting problems for quite awhile (many months). The last 5 of 6 nights, however, he has wet the bed (sometimes twice during the night). The one night he did not wet, he got up to go potty twice, which is unusual (he often doesn't get up at all during the night). Last night, he wet the bed less than 2 hours after going to bed and he used the potty right before bed. He doesn't drink that much after dinner although he always wants a piece of fruit at bedtime. He ate a banana and some grapes at bedtime last night. The only change that I see recently is that he was prescribed a steriod for wheezing last week and Singulair. He has finished the steriod but is still supposed to take the Singulair. Could the medicine be causing this? Anyone else experience this issue? Any suggestions on how to handle it. I tried to get him to wear a pull-up and he refuses. It is upsetting to him to put anything like a diaper on because he has been so long without diapers.

What can I do next?

I would call the dr and just review side effects with them. My son also has the occasional accident but if you are watching his fluid intake before bed and he goes before bedtime then that doesnt sound right.

Our daughter somewhat did this, but was never on any medicine.

We limit her drinks after dinner and make sure she goes potty TWICE after her last drink & before bed. This has been working for us!

My daughter who is 4 has wet the bed twice this week and never does usually I have put it down to the heat and her body holding onto fluids. I was told by my GP not to give her juice in the evenings because the citric acid irritates the bladder lining and can make the bladder send the full signal to the brain releasing its content. Not sure if the grapes could have had that effect. It does sound suspiciously linked to the medication, I would tell your doctor it maybe a side effect.

I guess the medicine could cause it, but we've been through this a few times with our 4 year old (he's also been potty trained fully for 2 years). It seems to come in phases -he'll go months without an accident, and then we'll have a week where he wets the bed almost every night. I ask him if anything has happened, if he's angry, sad, upset, etc. I've even asked him if anyone has touched him or anything like that! There never seems to be a real reason for it. His doctor says that it's common at this age as long as it's not happening ALL the time.

One thing you will see and hear from everyone including me -DO NOT put him back in pull ups or a diaper! I know it's very frustrating to change and wash sheets in the middle of the night and deal with, but if he does give in and wear a pull up -he'll start getting comfortable with it! One thing you could possibly do is buy the overnights undies they've come out with that (I think) have something like a pull up built in -they look like undies, but absorb -and they're for older kids. I've never gone to anything but underwear though -I don't want to start a habit or for him to get "comfortable" with it. I think it's just something we have to deal with for a few years after they're potty trained -accidents can be frequent! I WOULD ask his doctor about the medicine and just mention the sudden frequent accidents.

YES ! It is a rare side affect. My son went through the same thing years ago. His pulmonary specialist told me about this rare side affect. My son's regular pediatrician did not know what it could have been, she assumed he was getting up and drinking through the night, but he was already 8 yrs. old when the bed-wetting began, atleast 6 yrs after he was COMPLETELY potty trained (day & night). Turns out, it was the singulair that he had begun taking.

Usually one of the last things to grow after a growth spurt is a child's bladder - so nighttime wetting issues seem to correlate with growth spurts.

A word about Singulair: we've had several friends with boys of all ages, altho all under 10, on singulair longterm and every one had to be taken off for extreme depression and one even starting developing suicidal thoughts. Keep an eye out for irritability, mood swings, extreme emotionality, etc. Singulair is scary stuff. I do hope it helps him, tho, and without the side effects we've seen elsewhere!

Good luck!
