Newborn with Stuffy Nose
Is it normal for my newborn to always be congested at night and after every feeding? I have 2 more kids and they were never congested more than the first few days after being born, but my third scares me every night with his breathing. He has mild reflux and is on prevacid, he's 2 months old, almost 3
So What Happened?™
Well, he had bronchiolitis 3 weeks ago, but he had stuffy nose way before he got sick, and btw, he sleeps in the car seat inside of his crib, per dr suggestion, but still congested, I've tried nebulizer w/saline solution, vaporizer, and they don't deem to work....

This can be a symptom of an allergy. If you are BFing I would start with cutting out your Dairy. It can take up to 2 weeks for the dairy prorien to get out of yours and the babies systems. If he is on formula talk to his dr about an alternative.

I would say look at diet. this is what is most likely causing the congestion, especially since you mention relfux! the likely culprit is a protein such as milk (NOT LACTOSE! lactose is a milk SUGAR, not PROTEIN) and or soy. if you are breastfeeding you can read www.askdrsears.com and look for the Total Elimination Diet. If you are using formula, first you try nutrimigen/alimentum and give it a good TWO WEEKS and if there isn't any improvement then you try neocate/elecare (again, you must give every change a good two weeks to get the offending proteins out of baby's system)

The stuffiness comes from the reflux. That drug is very toxic. It is full of heavy metals and never approved for a baby to be on it for more then 6 weeks. The metals build up in the brain and then you have big problems. Ask your Dr to write Script for Bethanochol. It is an old drug but will take reflux away without the dangerous side effects. If your Dr won't prescribe it ( probabbly because he doesn't know about it) call Dr. Brian Udell in Weston for a consult. Get that baby on it's tummy to start building a core. Four times a day for 30 mins each time. This will help so much with the reflux. DO NOT let him sleep in carseat!! You are giving him Torticollis and a flat head. At times when you are watching him let him sleep on tummy. This is the optimal position for development. He may fuss till he gets used to it but you will be doing his brain and Central nervous system a BIG favor!

It is normal but if it gets excessive it may be a little cold. This happened to my son at about that age and it's actually starting to happen again now at 4 months almost 5. The doctor always recommends saline drops (little noses) and an air purifier. Since he is still so yound they don't really do too much more than that. You can also try some vapor rub on his chest. And sleeping a little upright is suppose to help as well in his car seat or swing. Honestly I never tried that because I felt weird putting him in one of those all night. If he get worse than maybe the doctor can give him something more regardless though you should always talk to your doctor. Good luck!

You may want to be careful with how you're feeding your baby (he may have some allergies or sensitivities that use up his immune resources). Colostrum supplementation would be good and something more natural to soothe the acid. I encourage you to use a natural physician who applies nutrition, homeopathy, or oriental medicine techniques. I know of some in Hollywood.

This may not work in your case, if you think is may be caused by something than more than a cold, but I thought I'd share any who. I believe in the power of breast milk. If you're nursing, you can squirt a little up his nose. It always cleared/ helped with my children. Same goes for gooey eye or red eye etc. Also the vick's plug ins (that plug into the wall) work great. Opens them right up, and of course elevating the crib mattress just slightly helps too. Best of luck.

my baby boy was less than a month old when He had a very congested rattle in his nose and i would lay awake at night to listen and make sure he kept breathing. One night he ran a fever and so I called the doctor. Doctor sent us straight to the hospital. All tests came back normal and they couldn't find a cause but said the fever spiked because the babies body is different from ours and a fever was the way his body could respond to the congestion in his nose. Well! it sounded crazy and I still don't know for sure what all that was about, but we finally went home and all seemed normal for the most part. Will never know what caused the high fever in my newborn, but if it happened now, i would have NEVER go back to the torture chambers of that hospital again. I do alot of research online before I jump too quickly into any decision now. I wish you the best.....
